Nintendo has updated Swapnote on the 3DS, despite its discontinuation

Nintendo_letter_box_-_Swapnote_Trivia.png

Remember Swapnote? Otherwise known as Nintendo Letter Box, the app let Nintendo 3DS users send each other messages drawn via the touchscreen through either the StreetPass or SpotPass functionalities of the system. Over the course of Swapnote's lifetime, Nintendo added features like new stationaries and ink colors, though its online functionality was eventually discontinued in 2013, with the cause likely being attributed to a string of cases where younger users had been sending illicit images through the app. Yet, despite Swapnote being discontinued for the better part of a decade, a new update snuck its way onto the 3DS eShop, for some reason. Even more confusing is the fact that the update specifies itself as one for "Swapnote Remastered", and the changelog consists of all of three words: "fixed some problems".

Swapnote Remastered (Released December 15, 2020)
  • Fixed some problems.

Is there something you'd like to tell us, Nintendo?

I asked a long time ago if anyone knew whether it was still possible to use exploits to download old versions of software from the eShop. No one answered. Perhaps there might be renewed interest now..?

At first I thought it was an Update to commend the 4-year-long Japanese animation effort that just Premiered a few days back.
... Then I realised Flipnote and Swapnote are two separate Applications.

I got a hold of a USA Revision 2 Swapnote, installed and tried the Update on New 3DS XL USA.
It basically failed, and the Update Notification banner is still rolling at the Application's icon.

So I don't have any first-hand information of what the Update actually does, but I can say that it does not Update for all versions of Swapnote.

Good, the 3ds needs to be kept alive and well. Been enjoying MK7 online the past few nights. I prefer it to the switch version & a switch lite doesn't fit in my pocket. NO SWITCH MICRO PLEASE UNLESS IT PLAYS 3DS & DS

my opinion, but, at this point in time, what really keeps 3ds alive is the homebrews and play "backups". Nintendo is not giving a sh*t about 3ds anymore, only for switch. those updates are only to break piracy and homebrew usage (yep, im captain obvious lol)

I don't think so, once they push the an updated version, typically the old version is removed, if not "deleted"

They apparently did that in some cases (like IronFall: Invasion, source of the famous "ironhax"), but definitely not all cases – otherwise that exploit would never have been useful at all.

I dunno about eshop titles, it may be how the code is structured, I know that nus downloader will not download any system titles that are known to be exploitable (yes it does still work somewhat), those versions don't exist on the server
