Hello, i have been an active lurker of GBATemp for a long time. i could normally solve every one of my problems by browsing threads, but this is one thing I can't find anyone have a similar issue.
I posted on Reddit on the PS2 thread, but I thought I could maybe get better insight here...

So I'm in a bit of a pickle here because I troubleshooted as far as I could.

Essentially I'm running games off my HDD through OPL (using a FreeMcBoot memory card), and I can play them just fine. However, they are unable to detect the second memory card. And the first FMB mem card has no extra space for saving.

I bought the card online so I wouldn't have to go through the process of making my own.

With WinHiip I installed the ISOs from game backups to my HDD, and like I said, they run just fine in OPL. I was even able to create VMCs so I could save at first. But for some reason, I stopped being able to create VMCs at all! Every time I try to create one, the PS2 freezes.

In fact, any time I try to access the HDD on my PS2 EXCEPT through OPL for PLAYING GAMES, it freezes my PS2 as well! Makes it load eternally. I tried accessing my HDD with UlaunchElf but it just freezes.

As a last resort, I tried converting my 128 Mb memory card into a FreeMcBoot card as well. I read online, and saw videos of it working, where people just copy the files from one card to another. And then restart the PS2 with the copied FMB card on the first slot, and it seems to work. but no luck for me here, I have done exactly that and the PS2 just displays black at boot.

I really am the end of my rope here. I can't identify the problem at all. it can't be the HDD because I can play all my games with no problem, right? Could it be the FMB card I got? It also freezes every time I try to launch "CodeBreaker", for some reason.

Thank you for reading, any help would be admired... I really can't find a way to save any of my games...

Free McBoot should still work if the card is in the second slot. So have your 128MB in the first slot, with your Free McBoot in the second.

You can copy saves, but just copying the Free McBoot files won't work. Download the installer and but it on a USB thumb drive, then boot to uLaunchELF and launch the installer and install to the 128MB. I can't confirm if that card will work or not, I only use official 8MB on mine.

It also sounds like you might have some corruption on your HDD. Personally I've switched to using an SD2IDE adapter and have an SD extender bringing the card outside the system. Swapping games is much easier as I just ejected the SD card and connect it to a PC and run WinHiip.

Thank you for the reply! Okay I will try with FMB on the second slot, though the manual said not to do that. HDD having corruption is weird, as I can save/delete/edit games using WinnHIIP and OPLManagaer, as well as play them with OPL. Normally I shouldn't be able to access anything that is corrupt right?

Yes I will try to do a root install if nothing works, using UlaunchElf. And I know larger memory cards might have problems with this, that is why I'm worried I'll never be able to save anything...

My dood it worked! I have no idea why they say to not put the FMB on the second slot. At least the games I tried recognize it!

I'll put the new versions of FMB and POL on my USb drive just in case though! Thank you for your input!

BTW I noticed the games recognized my memory card as an 8 MB one, but the PS2 browser still assumes it being 128. I don't know what to make of that. Was I sold a fake card or are most PS2 games unable to detect something with such high memory?

I spoke too soon. Some games refuse to save because they still say there is not enough available space. Which is weird, because I able to load from KH2 save data, but not save it.

AFAIK only 8MB cards were officially released. With extra free space there can be an overflow that reports negative available space. You could try copying some data on to the card to cut down the free space to 8MB or less as a test.

As for HDD corruption. It's been years, but I though the HDD loaders would create partitions for each game. While other programs are trying to access the first main partition which could be having issues.

As for not using the second memory slot? I'm not sure. I still have a chipped PS2 that doesn't need Free McBoot. But FMC is a hack that hijacks the loading of DVD player software from a memory card. That is supported in either slot. It's possible some software expects to be ran from the first slot. But I don't know why there would be corruption to anything else.
