With this emulator you have to use a very specific type of rom. And they all have to be named in a specific way. You can't just grab any old ROMs for it.
Google "FBA 0.2.97.44"
As for the controls not working. Can you literally not navigate the menus at all? Possibly due to it being a .nsp install. I don't have experience with forwarders. I only ever use .nro from homebrew menu.

I actually downloaded a Romset (14.7 gb) compiled with forwarder and pfba. But not even the ROM included in the pfba.rar on github(dino.zip I think) shows up so I really don't think it is about the ROMs. I will try again with the set you kindly indicated but is 27 GB so it will take some time. Meanwhile, do you think I should try to remove the application at all? Erase only the forwarded app?

Try the .nro first in homebrew menu to see does the controls and your Romset work. You may just need a different .nsp

I can't tell you why but Pfba app did not show up in the hbmenu so I did a little bit troubleshooting.
I tried to navigate to it with goldleaf but the whole folder resulted in a text file (O.O). I erased everything and place the .nro in the switch folder just to test it. Blank screen (make sense no structure files lol). I deleted the whole folder and the the files from the SD and re-transfered the pfba folder as it is on github repo; it starts but whne it tries loading the I had error code 2168-0002 (0x4a8) and I have to reload from payload screen. I re-erased and replace the folder. It starts !!!
But I can't run many game anyway...
Maybe is something about some of the bios (??) or about the ROMs as you said.
I will keep you posted.

"ROMs" folder is for arcade games. Like CPS2 and neo geo.
You need to make new folders with a specific name for other systems. Go back one page to my post on August 25 there's an image that shows the folders you need for each rom type.
Make a "coleco" and "megadriv" folder for those roms.
if you're on 4.4 the Romset FBA 0.2.97.44 should definitely work. Other Romsets may work but im not sure.

I suppose they have been set with a particular infostructure. It is only a supposition it may be something much simpler like writing permission. Are you on pc? if yes check in the properties or google it (sorry my OS is in Japanese I would end telling you the wrong nomenclature).
EASY fix -> find an empty folder (for me was ICONS folder) from the sd/switch directory. Copy-paste (NOT CUT) in the sd/switch/pfba directory. Only then rename it (in this case megadriv). EDIT: Rename the original megadriv as megadriv 1 before doing so. Be sure the newly created directory megadriv is empty and start moving one or two ROMs from megadriv 1 to check if it works.

Info: I have FBA romset 0.2.97.44 & FB Alpha 2016 Reference Set v0.2.97.39 (un-merged).
B. run CPS 3 roms, like say SFIII. I get Driver Init Failed.
Info: Do i need the NOCD versions? I tried using a NOCD version of Street Fighter 3 from the 0.2.97.44 romset (SFIII3N.zip) and getting a driver init failed, still. :/

When I run pfba version 4.4, the covers stop appearing when you are in the menu browsing ,, and the covers disappear ,,, you could see that error @cpasjuste ,, thank you very much for this great emulator ,,, there is an update for 4.5, ,, with virtual keyboard and vertical screen so that the right stick works in vertical for games 1942 example?
