Sony is reportedly in talks to buy Crunchyroll for nearly $1 billion

sony crunchyroll.JPG

Sony is apparently betting heavily on streaming services, more specifically, anime-streaming. A recent report from Nikkei broke the news that Sony has entered into "final negotiations" to acquire Crunchyroll, the U.S. anime-streaming service. While the deal's exact value is not specified, the report mentions that Sony could end up spending more than 100 billion yen ($957 million). U.S. telecoms and Crunchyroll parent company AT&T was previously rumoured to ask Sony to pay $1.5 billion for the streaming service back in August. The deal apparently did not go through due to the steep price.

Sony already owns the anime distributor Funimation, which it acquired in 2017, which added 1 million paying subscribers to its userbase. Adding Crunchyroll to its portfolio would expand this number as the streaming service already has 70 million free members and 3 million paying subscribers in over 200 countries and regions. Moreover, this would mean serious competition against other popular streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu.

Hah! With how much Sony is becoming Soyny, those waifus will be a thing of the past! If anything, you'll be seeing more women covered up and men will be getting all the bath scenes now, and eventually, Japan will just go, "fuck this," stop bothering with even considering releasing their stuff to the west, and then it will be back to the 90's when all you had were fansubs, which may not always translate things 100% accurately.
Sony is Japanese, so I don't see them alienate their own market.
Not that this move is important to me, but if this really get on as a perk, the brand is hoping to branch out.
It might actually work to get some subs.

They already did that with their gaming division. Granted, that was after the division inverted and became US-based, so the same wouldn't necessarily be true with Crunchyroll.

Microsoft axed that thing. Granted, there should be mirrors out there.
Did Microsoft pull the trigger or was it the RIAA? The main complaint I saw was from the music peeps. MS just owned the source code site and had to do the DMCA response part.

They have been doing a pretty good job of it for the last few years.

Though I am curious if Sony having an foot in the Japanese world might get easier access to things than might be now if they have an army of staff and rights lawyers already speaking Japanese and knowing something of the way the rest of the world plays.

Complete waste on sonys end
I don't know if I can get there.

They are the biggest game in town, the market for anime is massive and probably still has a fair bit of growth in it should it be handled properly, and they took a fair while clawing their way up there. Sony buying it eliminates a competitor, gives them instant access to a market, gives them instant back catalogue to play with (don't know how many years the average anime house would have given non Japan and non Korea rights to them for), and potentially the option to leverage it in a more exclusive manner (next xperia comes with free crunchyroll sort of thing).

I don't know that I would drop a billion on it as Sony presumably already has media streaming services, and could spin something up fairly quickly (as mentioned above with Sony still maintaining a foot in Japan then they would likely have all the little anime houses ready to pounce at the chance of working with them much like everybody works with EA or something in games, probably with similar end results but hey).

Here is my personal take on it if you are a PS Plus member they should just give you Fundimation and Crunchyroll for free. Why own something and still make your PS plus subscribers pay for them separately

Then again I can access my anime for free from different websites I'm already paying for Netflix I cant keep on jumping from subscription to subscription
