Again, having a faulty old 3DS XL, with a bit of water damage. Nothing seems really off on the motherboard except bits of rust on the top. I have no history about what happened to it.
When powering it on, I get a steady blue light, not sound. I removed the SD card, tried to boot it with and without game card. I transplanted the motherboard into a working 3DSXL, with the exact same behavior.
There was a 16Gb SD card in it, with garbled folders and files (random ascii characters).
I was wondering if the 3DSXL owner could have installed CFW, and that due to water damage when it was in the process of writing to the SD card, contents might have been damaged to the point where console is unable to boot.

I tried to resed home menu with L + R + Down + B held while powering on without success
I tried to go in recovery mode without success

I changed the SD card for one 4Gb working one, put Luma boot.firm and Luma 7.0.5 arm9loaderhax.bin to the root of the SD card, inserted it in, and powered it on. Steady blue light, 2 black screens again...

@TurdPooCharger : Would you consider the board dead, or do you think I could recover something working from this?

Thanks. I'll go get a linker.

Would this one be ok?
https://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=490

I wanted to get one without a timebomb, but couldn't find one in nds-card. Might be my eyes :)
EDIT - Your eyes do not deceive you. Finding flashcarts without time bombs are few and far these days.

You'll need another (o/n)(2/3)DS(i)(XL/LL)(phat/lite) with working DS(i) to reflash the cart into ntrboot mode.

The time bomb on the R4iSDHC series can be bypassed with YS Menu. The go to ntrboot compatible flashcart for anyone who can afford it would be the R4i Gold 3DS Plus (by www.r4ids.cn), but that model hasn't been in stock in months ( maybe discontinued for good :( ).

Another good/okay ntrboot option is the Ace3DS Plus; check my signature.

Thanks @TurdPooCharger , I'll go for the Ace3DS Plus.

FYI, digitopz does not take visa payment, only paypal through a mail sent to sales. Quite a strange process, does not really make me trust it...
any site will get banned for selling flashcarts. Thats been the way they have sold flashcarts on any site for years now.

Did not get an answer from digitopz yet... Hope they are faster to send the flashcart when they get the payment than when replying to my question.

Never got any answer from Digitopz, but I got a flashcart in a bundle. It's an R4 Upgrade revolution for DS... It's not listed in the compatibility list for NTRBOOT, does anyone knows if I could use it nevertheless?

if it aint listed. then no, flashing a unlisted card will brick the flashcart making it uselss to you.

UPDATE EDIT October 19, 2020
@yaum stated there was a misunderstanding in his later below post #12. He never bought or paid for anything from digitopz.com.

I'm leaving what I originally wrote here for those to see how this conversation played out.

To Digitopz, I'm sorry for jumping the gun in accusing your business of foul play. It doesn't help that in this shrinking DS flashcart market, bad word of mouth can quickly tarnish reputation and hurt income.

I, @TurdPooCharger, have added your Ace3DS Plus link back to my signature recommendation list.

Kind of sad... I was hoping that somehow I would be lucky for this one :)
Hey, I'm sorry you got ripped off. You paid for a Ace3DS Plus, and digitopz instead sent you a different product. That's bait and switch. Since digitopz has given you the silent treatment, this can be interpreted that they knew what they did was an underhanded tactic and hoped that you as the buyer would say nothing and accept the given product.

There are several 'R4 Upgrade Revolution for DS', and all of them are some of the earliest flashcart models. None of these are ntrboot compatible.

You're not alone in what just happened to you.

- Digitopz and their related sister websites (digi*) were the main sellers of the Ace3DS Plus and Ace3DS X. [wayback capture]
- http://www.ace3ds.com/ace-3ds-where-to-buy.html returns a '404 Not found' error as of late.

This year has seen several flashcart retailers close shop.

It seems the few that are still in business are selling what dwindling stocks they have left, and they can't seem to resupply their inventory. I think what caused (www.r4ids.cn) to stop making R4 Gold 3DS Plus also occurred to (www.ace3ds.com / Ace3DS Plus).
Xuvation said:
Well, I would be careful most sites should be out of stock or close to out of stock. I used to sell these r4 gold plus cards on ebay, sold hundreds, but I can't even restock. I started having quality control issues with them this year, like 5-20% of the cards were defective when I tested them on multiple shipments even though I told them about the number of defects, along with them sending crappier usb readers. When I accumulated 20+ defectives I was getting ready to exchange by shipping defects back, but that's when they went out of production so I got screwed. The person I buy from keeps saying the factory had chip / manufacturing issues, I'm still waiting for them to go back into production but it's been months so they might be gone for good. I'll keep inquiring on the availability though. Maybe they'll get another factory one day , I'm not sure who runs the site if its the factory or if the factory manufacturers on behalf of the company. But they showed signs of going downhill this year, wholesale price increased by 30% and then quality control plummeted for a couple months, and then they finally stopped manufacturing, at least I can't get any more.

Xuvation said:
Yea, I recently inquired again for gold plus cards like a week ago, and they pushed it back even further now there saying at the end of this year. I have doubts though, they keep pushing the date back, telling me they would start production again in a month, then 3 months, now it's at the end of this year or early next year.

I'm stuck selling the cheaper cards now, well at least they last longer in terms of durability, updating the firmware is pretty annoying but since the latest kernel files work on my leftover 2017 r4isdhc card I have, the timebomb cards should last for a while as long as you update the kernel every 3-4 years or set your console time back. Well, time to look for a new source of income. The r4 equivalent of Gba cartridges aren't even worth the hassle, extra low-profit margin. I'll probably stop selling in like 8-12 months. If the cheaper cards increase in price again might even stop sooner.

The reasons I started recommending the Ace3DS Plus sold by digitopz were,
  • (1) nds-card.com stop selling the R4i Gold 3DS Plus.
  • (2) Ace3DS Plus is ntrboot compatible, cheap, and uses WOOD kernel.
  • (3) All my readings about digitopz suggested it was a reliable retailer.

Digitopz shouldn't have declared this item as out of stock if they didn't have any at hand, not pull that substitution bad will shit on you. I've now taken that flashcart off my signature's recommendation links.

@yaum, I don't think digitopz will come clean refunding you your money, shipping a replacement/actual Ace3DS Plus, or renegotiating a compromise (partial refund) since they've kept quiet up to this point. Even then, a single bad deal like this can quickly burn down that trust bridge between buyers ⇄ seller.

I don't know if my words has much weight but on your next or last e-mail reply to digitopz, link this post to them. They should think very carefully how they want to conduct business going forward even with the pandemic and economic slowdown. A hanky pranky deal here and there might net them some $$$ to eat today, but what about tomorrow when others keep in mind to avoid them?

***

Again, my sincere apologies that my recommendation resulted this. That leaves back to square one in finding another flashcart that's ntrboot compatible. There's the R4iSDHC series found at nds-card.com or aliexpress.

If you still intend to settle on a flashcart without time bomb, the Ace3DS Plus can be found in a different package form.

@TurdPooCharger :
After reading back what I wrote, I must admit that it was misleading.
I'm very sorry for the misunderstanding, but I never received any message or shipment from digitopz. They never answered my multiple requests to get a payment solution, therefore I never paid anything.
What I meant is that I bought a bundle (console + games) in which I discovered there was a flashcart, and I was wondering if I could have been lucky with an NTRboot compatible flashcart.

Again, I deeply apologize for my unclear comment, leading you to spend so much time to write an answer.

I'll try to be more precise in my subsequent posts. I bought a games compilation flashcart on aliexpress, I'll ditch the games, but will finally be able to flash NTRboot when I'll receive it.

WELL, this is awkward...

Anyone who has read my previous post #11, disregard the parts about @yaum getting gypped.

I added a disclaimer to styme giving Digitopz any more of a bad rep.

So, I bought a preloaded flashcart on aliexpress (520 in 1). It's an Ace3DS plus, as expected in the thread.

When strictly following this guide for NTRBoot ( https://3ds.hacks.guide/flashing-ntrboot-(3ds-single-system).html ) I never managed to get it to boot through the flashcart, on the dead 3DS, and on a working 3DS.

Flashcart by itself is working on another 3DS with the games, I have a magnet which is putting the working 3DS into sleep (actually a 3dsxl speaker...), and I use the combination (start+select+X+power) with no luck.
The two files I put on the sd card inside the Ace3DS plus are:
  • boot9strap_ntr.firm in the folder ntrboot
  • ntrboot_flasher_nds.nds in the root folder
There is no SD card in the 3DS. Is there something to setup on the flashcart? The ace3ds.com website is not helpful, and does not mention a procedure for NTRBoot.

To run the flasher (with a single/no-modded 3DS), the flashcard must be opening/working normally on the 3DS and you just open the flasher file like another DS game/title through the flashcard itself. You shouldn't to have deleted any existing file by default on the flashcard microSD (in case of you has it done) or changing for another clean microSD card, because there are the kernel related files on it (and kernel is absolutely necessary to make the flashcard runs on DS mode).

By the other hand, I've understood that not all kind of Ace3DS Plus cards are compatible with ntrboot  (perharps I'm wrong or is only my imagination)

I thought I had to do something like in the video below, as the console I want to fix is not booting at all

By the way, the flashcart is working properly (I can load the os and games on it) on another working console

if its working like a proper flashcart should. then it means that you have to flash the ntrboot firm to the card. https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot

OK, I did not flash the ntrboot firm to the cart. Will try later in the day to flash it and it should work better.

When I select the flashcart, (Ace3ds+), I just get a message "Flashcart setup failed! Press <B>".
20201029_212044.jpg 20201029_211844.jpg
I used ntr_boot_flasher_nds v5.1.1, and tried on unhacked o3DSXL, hacked n3DSXL

I get this in the ntrboot.log on the sd card in the flashcart
[INFO]: Ace3DSPlus version: 22330080
[INFO]: Ace3DSPlus: spiRdid: FFFFFF
[INFO]: Ace3DSPlus: cartSdInit: success
[INFO]: Ace3DSPlus: spiRdid: FFFFFF
['ERROR]: Ace3DSPlus: RDID still FFFFFF after init

@fmkid you might have been right, maybe this specific card is not NTRboot compatible...

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

but that game barely runs at native 4k

I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding
