So Super Mario War for the Wii has seemingly been abandoned for years now, but it's source is still available on it's github https://github.com/dborth/smw-wii

And I know that Wii homebrew can be updated for use with Wii U Pro Controllers and even the Gamepad, if the source is edited to do so as various Wii-based emulators have seen. Of all the great homebrew games on the Wii that could use this kind of update beyond emulators, I'd argue that Super Mario War tops that list. So if anyone knows what they're doing, could they update the homebrew game to at least make use of the Wii U Pro controllers, the Gamepad would be great too, but that's less pressing of a desire if I'm being honest.

In case anyone was looking for a version of Super Mario War with Wii U pro controller support, a user on one of the Wii U hacking discords was able to implement it for me, thought I should share it here since it'd likely go lost and unnoticed by most of the scene if it were only there. No GamePad support yet at this time, but being mainly a multiplayer game, I think pro controller was a more crucial addition of the two as it is.

If someone could share the Gamepad source..
I want to start a journey in homebrew development

I believe this is what you're looking for https://github.com/FIX94/libwiidrc

Keep in mind if you implement the support for gamepad after compiling the source with the code added in, you need to then create a channel for it from the Wii U menu with TeconMoon's vc injector.

I have tried running the super mario war version which supports pro controllers and I couldnt get my pro controllers to work. It only works with the wii controllers. I did an injection of the game on my wii u using UWUVCI AIO software. Do you know what I could/should do in order to enable the pro controllers to be recognized.

As long as you're using the version that supports pro controller in the second post here, it wont matter how you set up Mario War, if you access it from the vWii or directly from the Wii U, pro controller should work, it would only be GamePad support (if such an app had it) that could be an issue in that regard.

Have you tried launching the app directly from the vWii homebrew channel? Cuz if that isn't working, then I don't know what to tell ya. I will also say that I have mine set up to launch directly from the Wii U menu, however, I tried to do so with teconmoon's injector which kept giving me errors with the app for whatever reason, so what I ended up doing instead was making one of those haxchi channels that can directly launch a vWii channel, and then installed a vWii forwarder for Super Mario War with the pro controller version in the wii apps folder, and it works great, pro controller support and able to launch the game from the Wii U menu.

I cannot launch the app directly from the vWii homebrew as I did not hack my vWii but only my Wii U. That is the reason I have injected the game in the first place. I am certain that I used the version from your second post so I am not sure why the pro controller is not recognized. I have 2 pro controllers and it doesnt recognize any, I am saying this just as a point that it shouldnt be due to my controllers.

I used the mentioned UWUVCI AIO software and also I can open the game from the Wii U menu after starting up haxchi.

Well then my guess is that you then need to hack your vWii as well, genuinely not sure why you haven't yet, honestly, if you've hacked the Wii U side, it's so simple, and it unlocks so many more possibilities for your system.

I am not sure, it shouldnt be the fact that i did not hack my vWii. Does it have to do anything with the fact that there is a file which says "0001-Make-it-compile-with-latest-devkitPPC"? I am just very clueless why it does not work. I have tried reinstalling the game and it still does not work.

I mean I didn't have to touch any file named anything like that. Again I advise hacking the vWii side if nothing else is working for you. It really should be as simple as putting the app in your apps folder and launching it from the homebrew channel.

Maybe the mistake is that I am putting the game files on the root of my SD card and not somewhere else? I have placed the "injection" file in the install folder and launched it from homebrew channel and I keep the game files (of only SMW) on the root of my SD card.

Well if you're trying to install as a Wii U channel by making it with UWUVCI, you shouldn't need anything on the root of your sd card aside from the mariowar folder with all the assets (forget the proper name of that folder offhand) If you can install the channel and it boots into the homebrew, then you should have everything you need.

Maybe UWUVCI has a setting you need to activate if you're gonna make the channel with that program. I can't imagine why it would for pro controller support, but I'm really not sure what else could be the problem if you're using the file provided in the second post here.

Having said that, I had tried to make a channel directly from the Wii U with TeconMoon's injector which accomplished the same thing as UWUVCI, but I wasn't even able to create the channel because it said something was wrong with the boot.dol file (even though nothing is). Could be that the boot.dol just doesn't play nice with these Wii U channel making software. My roundabout method of making a Hacxchi forwarder channel to a vWii forwarder channel does accomplish the same goal though and indeed has the pro controller support, again though, this method would require hacking the vWii.

Also, this may sound silly, but did you try hitting the sync button on the Wii U and the Wii U pro controller once you're in the game? If I remember correctly, the first time playing any vWii homebrew app with Wii U pro controller support you need to sync the controller even if it's properly synced on the Wii U proper side.

Ok so I have tried syncing the remotes again and I have observed that one command from my Wii U pro remote gets recognized and the character in the character selection menu changes. It happened once even without syncing. But the main point here is that the remote manages to issue one command but then stops being able to send any other commands. This is very strange.

Having said all of this I am not sure what could cause it and if it is the Wii U channel making softwares that are responsible or just some major error I am overseeing.

Well then it would seem there isn't an inherent problem with the app or your sd card's structure. I guess I'd just keep trying to resync and hope that maybe it will eventually stay paired.

Yeah there is no problem with the game, it runs perfectly. But I have tried resyncing and it wont register a command now. The only time it registers it is once per controller for each run of the game. So i would have to restart the game and then issue a command again and it would register but then it would stop registering. No disrespect, but are you sure the link you gave has the files that adapted the game for wii u pro controller, I am just desperate because I am clueless what could cause this issue.

Oh I assure you, that's the version with Wii U pro controller support, the fact that you can connect for even a moment is all you need to know that it is indeed that version, as no other build out there on the internet supports Wii U pro controller support in any way. Again if nothing else is working, I really would recommend hacking your vWii and trying to launch the game from there. Or maybe it's a problem with your pro controller, it should be noted that 3rd party Wii U pro controllers tend to have issues with Wii homebrew that support the Wii U pro controller, so I do hope you're using official pro controllers.

Now whether the wii u pro controllers are official or not I have absolutely no idea and because I have no idea it could be a high chance that they are not official.

Thanks for the information that connecting even for a moment with the wii u pro controller is a sign that the setup is fine. I will keep this version installed and will keep trying to connect my wii U pro controllers. My wii controllers work with the game properly. In case I find a solution (either by luck or some systematic error) I will post it here. Thank you again for your time and for helping me out!
