I'm thinking of upgrading my USB storage to 128gb to accommodate Wii and GameCube games. Can anyone recommend a working Usb Drive for the Wii? I see some offered on Amazon, but they're not listed in the official Working USB List.

Hello,

I suggest you take an external hard drive (recommend FAT32) for your games, you will have better results for the connection with the wii. You can put games wii and Gamecube. A 500 GB or a 1TO will be more than enough, after all depends on what you want to put in it.

Some large capacity USB sticks work, but not all.

I no longer know which brand of high capacity usb sticks works with wii.

Here is a compatible list or not (a little old) ==>https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List

I'd suggest an SD card too.
SD cards are more reliable than Hard Drives.
Not all hard drives are compatible with the Wii. Besides, you'll need to format your Hard Drive to FAT32 which will take forever to do so.

With SD cards you can just install d2x-cIOS and you'll be able to load Gamecube and Wii isos from a 128GB SD card.

Configurable USBLoader to be more precise.

I never got to work USBLoader GX, and the strange thing is that I just switched USBLoader GX to CFG USBLoader and it works amazingly.

Yes,that is why I wonder why SD Cards would be recommended without knowing the USB Loader.
USBLoader GX does not support Wii Games from the SD Card.:)

WTF, I see all these responses to my post, and I never received a single notification until today when the view count hit 1000. Otherwise I would have chimed in!

Anyway, when I created this post last April, I was already using an 64GB SD card for my homebrew channel apps/retro games. At that point I was looking into a USB drive for my GameCube and Wii games since the USB reads faster than the SD cards. INSTEAD of getting a USB drive (for reasons mentioned by jeannotte, THANKS jean!), I acquired a Seagate Portable 1TB external hard drive, which was just a little over $50 with shipping. Here's a link to the Amazon seller if you'd like to get one for yourself...

It is now September and I haven't had one single issue with my hard drive and USB Loader GX/nintendont config. The benefit to using Seagate is that they offer a free downloadable driver for Mac users so they can format to NTFS (which you cannot do on a Mac by default).

Setup was easy except for when it came to transferring files 4GB or larger on fat32 (which you cannot do on fat32, yet those larger files are some of the better Wii games in my opinion). Some people recommend splitting the file, but I tried a different solution; I partitioned my 1TB hard drive. One partition (200GB) is formatted with fat32 for GameCube games (which are never larger than 4GB). The second partition (800GB) is formatted with NTFS for Wii games. This way, I never have to split the .wbfs files. So far this configuration has performed flawlessly. I opted to go this route, because I only have a Mac, so when it comes to splitting files, I have to use Witgui. However when I use Witgui, the split files are slightly larger than 4GB, which I discovered causes loading issues. You can successfully split to 1GB files, but it just ends up being a lot of little files to manage, and I was concerned that might compromise game performance. Partitioning my drive was an easy way to dodge the whole splitting issue.

Hope this helps! I must say I'm very pleased with my modded Wii, which I feel is a far superior alternative to retro gaming than some of these devices on the market today (including the mini console series). Good luck ya'll!

HEY! IS YOUR PROFILE PICTURE THE CHARACTER FROM THE GAME JOUST?
I've been wanting to do some fan art of that game!

Yes it is! It's in the Atari2600 Joust manual. I have fond memories as a kid staring at the various 2600 game artwork, and this is one of the images I enjoyed...

But I want something new so I've changed my avatar. :)

Seagate portable 2Tb are rather cheap these days,..I load everything (game-wise) from the USB. Gamecube, wbfs, PS1, n64, nes, snes,...as long as your drive is formatted Fat32 with 32kb cluster size and set as Active,... you can do it all.

Just use the SD for other Homebrew Channel apps and utilities (like loading wads and such).

Are you playing PS1 on your Wii? I can never get it to work. If so, which emulator are you using, and does it play Symphony of the Night?
