I loved R Type and the SHMUP genre but I think that video doesn't do it justice. Is it just me or does it look rather slow and threadbare in gameplay compared to it predecessors?

It looks lovely but SHMUPs should be frantic. I think they obvs concentrated more on the aesthetics than the gameplay.

what's odd is that the 360 is a lot like the dreamcast with tons of shmup games that came out only in Japan from Cave, Milestone, and a few other companies. Otomedius Gorgeous is my favorite of the bunch, but I usually test out Death Smiles XX whenever I update my system to make sure everything is okay. however, I no longer have either game after an hdd crashed. :(

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I think the reason has something to do with the high cost of development kits for the ps3 combined with it being a niche market. I know that's the reason there are thousands of indies on the 360. you had to pay some sort of license fee for $99/yr iirc on the xbox, but the development kits for the ps3 were around ten grand. the development tools on the 360 were also through windows, so anyone could make a game if they felt like it.

R-Type back from the dead!
Been replaying a lot of R-Type lately, looking forward to this.
Glad its coming to PC and Switch, more so GoG cause DRM free is nice.
I hope they make an R-Type collection with all the games and spin offs like Leo and that turn based strategy game on PSP.

Taken from 2003 interview with Kazuma Kujo, lead designer and producer of R-Type Final:
http://shmuplations.com/rtypefinal/
Kujo: This [R-Type Final] will be the last R-Type game Irem releases. If we didn’t add “Final” to the title this time, players would be waiting expectantly forever. It gradually dawned on me how cruel that would be, so from the start I thought it would better to say up front, “this is the end.” I also felt that if we could make a STG that you could play for a very long time, then maybe players wouldn’t have any reason to wait for a new release. Our slogan during the development was “Let’s make a STG you can play for 100 years.” This was our plan from the very start, so the title on the production papers also says “R-Type FINAL (draft title)”. Then all we did was remove the “draft title” part. Though I do think players who see FINAL in the title will probably get mad and think “what gives them right to say that?”

The final “thank you” section of the manual was our way of saying thanks to all the players who have supported us for so long. Within Irem, we realized it was the “final” game, and we were able to show our gratitude to the players in a variety of ways. For example, the box label comes in 4 colors, the first press comes with dogtags, and although at first there was talk of raising the price to 6800 yen, someone said “that’s not how you show gratitude to our fans” and it was dropped. And whenever I asked the staff to redo things because this was the final R-Type game, the staff was like, “well, since its the final game, I guess we’ve got to do it.” (laughs) We knew it was the last game from the start–there would be no do-overs. “FINAL II” wasn’t going to happen!
Kazuma Kujo is also credited as the lead designer of R-Type Final 2.

No ps5 release or was that missed? Either way i will get it as it looks awesome and i love these old side scrolling shooters

It'll be available for PS5, too. lol

>PC and gog
I'm pretty sure gog is not a platform that is seperate from PC but aight.

GOG deserves special mention because we all love non-DRM. In a sense, it is a different platform--where I am guessing the other is Steam.

Maybe... by the language he used, I'd dare to say that he was probably joking about the whole Final thing in the title.
My only concern though, is that the time they took to make another R-Type game... the waiting... is almost legal. (Get it?)

Why wait 17/18 years though?
