Taking on account that this site has all kinds of people of many flavours, ages and places... I began to wonder about the things that old people would say to new generations.
The kind of things that would make you go: "Back in my day we had/did/used to/" while shacking our canes at them while wondering with pain why things that used to be awesone are taken for granted nowadays.

So, I was wondering if you could share personal experiences with older and younger generations on this site.
Some kind of time machine that make us go: "Oh, right, I had/did/enjoyed that, and nowadays we cant do/don't have that"

So I'm going to start with these sentences just to put an example, and maybe start conversation amongst fellow members.

  • Back in my day, we used to have seasons. And I'm ashamed that younger generations will never be able to experience a sunny day without the sun trying to burn you alive.

  • Back in my day, we had good music, many genres and one would be able to enjoy it for what it was and not for who was aimed to.

  • Back in my day, we used to connect to the Internet over a phone line, and we had limited MB of speed and even limited time. The Internet was precious back then, helpful and actually valuable. A luxury that few lucky ones were able to experience.

  • Back in my day, we had huge leaps in videogame graphics and special effects in movies. They meant a lot for us, and younger ones won't know how GASP was to jump from 2D games to 3D environments. This only adds nostalgia to all those who remembers seeing our favourite games jumping from 8-bits to 32/64-bits.

  • Back in my day, we could talk with more freedom than nowadays. Which is very ironic, because people seems to have more freedom in things that didn't matter back then. Thus, personal expression is being retained by nowadays social politics.

  • Back in my day, candies and junk food had more natural ingredients that today's shampoos.
Now, it's your turn to go back in your memories and share things that you consider were important and amazing back in your day.

i imagine in the future we will pump information directly to the brain, so we'll go "Back in my day in order to see pictures from a computer, we had to conect a small box that would emmit lights, and stare at said box, eventually it became more of a slate than a box, there were also boxes that projected the light into a wall and we would stare at that, audio also wasnt much better, there were these things, made of a membrane, a coil and a magnet, they were called speakers, you either had them on another box conected to your computer, or have a small version held by a headband, there were this really tiny ones on a platic enclosure that would go into your ears, ahhh, the 2010's"

Back in my day, we could speak about future without including unemployment, AIDS, cancer, international terrorism.

Back in my day, we used to play the games we bought, because we had to wait long before the next one.

Back in my day, there was snow in winter where i leave.

Back in my day, there was frogs and nenuphar in the river i use to fish.

Back in my day, no one had brought weapons to our school.

back in my day dlcs wernt a thing
expansion packs were a thing and was bette
thing with dlc: they didnt start with bad intentions, mostly "ok, we sadly didnt have enough time to do this for release, but we managed to add it post release, we'll charge a bit, but not much, because extra work was required but some was already done" and went to "we need to somehow add anything else to charge another 20 bucks"

Back in my day, we didn’t have to choose between resolutions, tech specs and other boring stuff. We just had to insert the cartridge and enjoy.

Back in my day, we had to look for our cheatcodes in magazines, and type them in the dedicated menu when there was one.

Back in my day, we could backup our saves in memcards, and share them with friends.

Back in my day, we owned physically our games. I mean, once paied, it was yours. Really.

Back in my day, we had ashieved games on release date. Devs didn’t count on day-one patch to finish the job.

Back in my day, we could play our beloved FPS four players at once on the same TV. Thank you GoldenEye and Perfect Dark for the countless hours of fun.

Back in my day, we didn’t play videogames with our parents. At best, they tolerated videogames…

Back in my day, we had to share the only TV with parents. Tvs were not cheap enough to have your own one in your room.

listening to a cassete tape on a car's player

having to wait until a certain time to watch the show you want to see, as opposed to having it all readily available for you ( or having it on tv all the time, like cartoon network and nickeloden love to do )

having to rewind a movie before returning it

the feeling of being in control of your life, no cell phones listening, no cameras, no social networks chiming in on what you do, no internet.

the good feel of media until the mid to late 90s. it's a feeling that just cannot be replicated now

media trying to make the news more and more gory and shocking everyday, more at eleven.

having to rely on magazines to knowing upcoming games and how good they were

the feel of satisfaction of spotting the rare sight of a video game reference on tv

the whole family getting together to watch movies on the weekens on tv

garfield being genuinely hilarious and cheeky

a lot of terrible to awesome movies and series that were lost to time, because they weren't iconic enough, and either weren't digitized or got in the hand of collectors.

having to phone your friends if you wanted to talk to them, and hoping they were home.

Back in my day old people complained about their youth being cooler with sentences that started with "Back in my day"...

And the cycle continues. I thought our generation was better than this (though I genuinely appreciate being reminded of the nice-to-haves of the good old days).

Back in my day we had no PCs in our pockets.
Back in my day racism was much more common (but less vocal than today) due to the lack of globalization in a lot of countries.
Back in my day video game graphics were either a matter of imagination or pure artistical talent, because that's what you need to get something recognizable out of a 4-color-pallette and an 8x8 grid of pixels.

And I'm happy that future generations will not have to know about this.

lol, graphics. remember 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, etc. all gaming came out to was a number, which had nothing to do with how fun anything was to play. sound familiar? imo, every new playstation is more disappointing than than the last. it's not so much the system but the games that go along with it. can you honestly say final fantasy xv is better than final fantasy vi, and how much more graphical fidelity is that?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

that would be like saying that the music of today is better than decades ago because the technology is better. does anyone really think that's true? I remember an interview with Uematsu, going on my final fantasy comparison. he's the composer of all final fantasies up to x I believe. he said he liked his older music more, because it was lower tech. you had to be more creative as he put it.

Drinking water from the garden hose

Dungeons and dragons......on paper

No internet. No streaming. No downloading.

Requesting a song on the radio and the running a tape recorder to record that song. The song you requested but never knew when it was going to be played.

playing outside with the other kids on the street and going home when either the street lights came on or someone’s mom whistled.

not locking your home up at night

having dinner with your family and your friend from down the street comes over. You tell them to come in and join you.

Rotary phones

S-video

A/B tv switches

Not having a remote control for your tv

Not needing child daycare because only one income was enough

I legitimately became interested in Dinoh's and p1ng's posts (no pun intended) .. and became curious about the differences between "Former Staff" / "Supervisor" / "Moderator".

The wiki won't clear my doubts and that's something that fits this thread.

They will never know the pain of moving files between PCs using a stack of floppies and a copy of WinZip.
They will never know the pain of trying to download game patches, addons, demos, etc. at 5KB/s, and leaving the dialup on when you're supposed to disconnect it because your downloads aren't done.
They will never know the pain of waiting for games to load from CD.
