What is the Maximum number of playable ps2 games on one hard drive plugged into a ps2?

That is, games that can be played on the ps2 from its hard drive, using freemcboot or something like that. The goal is to have a menu containing as many backed up game isos as possible.

AFAIK OPL supports up to 2TB, but be aware of LBA48 support with any >137GB HDDs for any software you might use besides OPL e.g. unpatched HDDOSD/Browser 2.0.

Note: My HDD is 80GB so I have no personal experience with LBA48 HDDs on the PS2.

unpatched HDDOSD/Browser 2.0.
The hacked ones you can "readily" find are LBA48 compatible, and the unmodified ones would probably only be a problem if you used a PSX hard drive :P

Indeed there's no limit apart from free space for partitions (which is allocated in multiples of 128 MB, possibly larger units on larger drives)

On top of that, there is a reason that the only official disk is 40 GB - the IOP has 2 MB of memory which is shared with all other drivers, once you exceed the high 2 digits of partitions they don't fit in cache anymore, meaning significant performance penalties due to seek times every time the disk needs to be scanned to list all partitions (such as in HDDOSD, *LaunchELF's HddManager, and refreshing the game list in modern OPL)
Now if you want to use a large SSD, no problem :)

What is the maximum SATA hard drive size that can be stuffed full of PS games, plugged into the back of a PS2, and used by OPL?

What is LBA48?

Max is 2TB.

What is LBA48?

48-bit logical block addressing is a means to allow the older IDE drives to break the 137 GB limit (original IDE design used 28 bits, which caps out at 137GB)

How do I geta 2TB drive to work on my ps2? Does it require anything special in terms of preparation that would make me need a special guide?

What do you want to do?

Format:
You can use the latest ULE (4.43a IIRC, it's on the latest FMCB). Just go to File Browser>MISC>HDD MANAGER>R1>Format

FHDB:
Just run the FMCB Installer using your method of choice, HDD images may also be available if you don't have another way.

If you use the installer, IIRC it's in the install menu>R1

OPL:
Just run the ELF.

HDDOSD AKA Browser 2.0:
You'll need to find an LBA48 patched version, but I can't link to any. Typically these are premade images.

HDDOSD can be a pain though, only reason to use it IMO is to backup MC saves onto the HDD or you don't like FHDB.

Probably the simplest setup is to just use FMCB and OPL from the MC or USB with the HDD formatted via ULE.

I'd like to also add that HDD OSD (Browser 2.0) will not work on drives that are 2TB -- the drives must be strictly less than 2TB. That said, HDD OSD is extremely slow when used with larger drives because of the APA partition format and low resources used to scan the partitions. It works ok for smaller drives, but even then I would not use it. This is fairly easy to set up with the correct files (simply copy to the HDD using a USB drive).

As for setting up 2TB drives, the only thing you might need to change is the partition table. If for some reason your drive is set up as GPT, then switching it to MBR might help it get detected with uLaunch.

I have FreeMcBoot and a USB stick ready. And a SATA ps2 network adapter thing that has a sticker blocking access to the network adapter hole. There is currently a small hard drive sata inside. Should I get a 2TB and replace the current one?

Someone told me OPL can only load the first 256 PS2 ISOs on a hard drive. Is that correct now, or has that limit been bypassed?

I'm looking at 2tb SATA hard drives but some are physically bigger than others. Some are big and boxy, some are quite thin. I have no idea what to get!

Which 2tb SATA hard drive is the correct size, make, model, and inches for a PS2? I'm using a third party PS2 Network Adapter with a SATA port and a sticker over its network port telling me not to use the network adapter.

please tell me so I don't waste money on the wrong products.

I know this thread is a couple months old but I wanted to add in my two-cents here.
Using a 2TB drive is very much an option as I am doing so as we speak. Setting it up is pretty much the same as setting up any other HDD. Follow the installation guides for FMCB and on the installation window, press (R1) on your controller and you'll see a second option to install FHDB. Once completed, the PS2 will load without taking any space on your memory card. I will add that WinHIIP is the primary method of manipulating your HDD, however it does not support 2TB drives so you'll want to use "`hdl_dumb" instead. Using hdl_dumb and Open Loader Manager will allow you to do anything you need to do.

I should also state incase you don't already know, but it should go without saying that IDE drives are not 2TB so you'll need a PS2 Network Adapter that uses SATA instead. If your Network Adapter is a "clone" and not the original, you have a 90% chance of running into problems. My suggestion to resolve this is to do what I did and buy a normal IDE Network Adapter then find a SATA converter kit (Green PCB, not a purple one) and manually swap the hardware inside the adapter (you will need hex keys to do this). Once finished, you will no longer have any issues.

Why should you get a converter kit with a green PCB instead of a purple one? I have a Bitfunx purple one.

Be careful with the conversion kits, I'd at least put some electrical tape on the pcb as I accidentally blew the 12v rail on my PS2. I suspect it shorted at some point but fortunately 5v is fine.
