Genshin Impact first impressions - more than just a Breath of the Wild clone

gbatemp_first_impressions_genshin_impact.jpg

Waiting for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 to finally come out has become an almost impossible task. With no release date in sight, the dramatic lead-up to the game's launch date could go on for who knows how many more months. But luckily, there's something out there to fill that cell-shaded open-world exploration shaped hole in our hearts: Genshin Impact.

But while labeling Genshin Impact as a Breath of the Wild clone wouldn't exactly be wrong, it'd be a disservice to the game that developer MiHoYo has created. Many of the game's elements, from its graphical style, to the concept of its open-world are very reminiscent of Nintendo's most recent Zelda game, but Genshin Impact makes unique additions to its core gameplay. In fact, it's is a weird mish-mash of all sorts of interesting ideas, many of which it mixes quite well. The game comes from a Chinese studio, but looks very much like a Japanese game, while incorporating MMO-esque elements into its gacha action-RPG gameplay.

The first thing you'll likely notice about Genshin Impact is the fact that the game is entirely free to play. Releasing on iOS, Android, PC, and PlayStation 4, each of those versions don't cost a single cent to play, from beginning to finish. That's because it uses a gacha-based system as a source of revenue. In your adventures throughout the world of Teyvat, you'll get the chance to play as many different characters, from great-sword wielding Diluc, to the wind archer Venti, there's a wide variety of options to choose from, but only if you're lucky enough. While you do get plenty of characters by playing normally, some of the best and most useful of the cast will only be playable if you manage to "pull" one from a banner--a lucky draw that has about a 0.6% chance of occurring. Those chances are especially harsh if you're coming from one of Nintendo's gacha games like Fire Emblem Heroes or Dragalia Lost, which have 5.0% and 4.0% odds respectively.

Despite that, Genshin is still quite friendly towards F2P players. There’s a wealth of interesting and strong 4* characters that you can obtain, and while the term free-to-play might make you skeptical of how far you can get before you’re inevitably smacked with a paywall, there’s never really a moment where the game does that--at least for the first 50 or so hours. Given how much playtime you can get out of Genshin before you even consider paying a meager $4.99/mo for the commissions pass or the $9.99/mo for the battle pass to get even more out of the game in the form of rare item drops, that’s surprisingly impressive.

Speaking of impressive, the sheer amount of things there are to do in Genshin Impact can almost be intimidating. Once you've set off on your journey, you'll have no shortage of quests to complete, adventures to be had, and items to collect. Much like other open-world games, a lot of the fun comes from wandering the world, finding new locations, and obtaining rare and powerful new items.

Elements play a big part in the role of this game's combat; you start off with a wind-based one-handed sword user, but you'll eventually recruit F2P party members such as a fire-based archer, or an electric mage, each of which play drastically differently, and have many uses in the overworld, as you'll need various elements to solve puzzles or have advantages against enemies. The combat system is varied and incredibly fun, especially when you learn that you can quickly switch between characters to create cool combo attacks, like wind and fire for burning tornadoes, or electricity and water to electrocute your foes. Each of the different styles and how types factor into battle help keep the game engaging to play, and it makes it all the more satisfying when you pull off cool-looking moves, even after hours upon hours of playtime.

For what you get--a beautiful world to explore, interesting gameplay, and even co-op with friends--all for no cost at all, it's hard not to recommend Genshin Impact. This is perhaps microtransactions at their best; hardly impacting the overall experience, resulting in a game that feels like it should cost AAA prices, but doesn't. Fans of anything even somewhat similar to Breath of the Wild should absolutely check this game out.

I kinda wanna play this but I'd feel like I'd be betraying Nintendo
not that i can be bothered to read all comments, but i bet you and loads of other nintendo fanboys are sat crying "THEY COPIED OFF NINTENDO"

as if nintendont invented cell shaded design, open world games and rpg.

ohhh wait, they didnt, they took what others have done and dont care what anyone says, they did a piss poor job, the game is terrible and boring.

and to think, this is what theyve had in the works for all this time, the last zelda game we had was TP for the cube, nintendo couldnt be arsed to make anything new for the wii u, and this just feels like its been crapped out just to showcase the different ways the joy con can be used to do fucking boring puzzle shrines.

have no interest the its sequel because its going to be retarded that all of a sudden all these new areas appear that wasnt in there to start with.

this genshin is similar, but then so is botw to others like it, but this is mile better and its FREE.

Been playing a bit every day since day one. The game is awesome.
I have around 11 chars, aside from the 4 free ones, the otheres all came from free draws you get as you play.

- Not a copy of BOTW
- Not a pay to win
- Excelent music
- Multiplayer (works excelent)
- A nice story (Family Friendly)
- A lot of waifus and awesome anime characters
- Excelent combat mechanics
- Excelent RPG levels system (Very similar like the Fire Emblem Heroes system with the constelations, etc)
- A big open world
- Multiplatform
- Multilanguage
- PC-Mobile cross-save

This is one of the best 2020 videogames. Only 4 pages were reviewed in Metacritic (what a joke this press man).

I can only say that I am already adventure level 25

salty over a shit game, naa mate, just see for what it is, pretty pathetic nintendo handnt made a new zelda game since the cube, and this is the shit we got.

but to be fair look at how lazy they are with the switch, porting all its old stuff over, do a so called special anniversay mario collection and do a piss poor job at that, even hackers showed mario64 more love.

so no, im not salty when ive said from day one before the switch came out, what it would be like, its the fanboys that get all salty because you dont bend over loyally and ram nintendo up where the sun dont shine.

maybe nintendo are focusing more on taking down resellers and tx and forgot about games.

but anyways, i got bored of the game, took to gannon laughed my ass off how easy he was compared to normal enemies, now sits collecting dust and will never get played again.

but unfortunately im finding genshin pretty fucking good and to top it off, its a free game

You may not like it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a Zelda game(well, it’s at least like the first Zelda)

so your saying the time it took, this is worthy.

naaa, its just not worthy, the time its taken to get a new installment and this attempt to "COPY" off others, yes thats right, nintendo have copied off others, and did a piss poor job at it.

but each to their own, i know from hating that game i wont be buying the next one, like by magic this whole new world to open up that never existed in the first game is like ott.

anyone with sense will know why theyre keeping it going, is because its paid off critics helped make it a success so they want to draw these sheep back in, high profits - more than likely shit game recycled again.

Production value is very high. The voice acting for English, Chinese, and Japanese cutscenes are incredibly well done.(Haven't played in Korean, but I expect it to be of equal quality) It's like I'm playing BotW again with how well designed this game is.

I started playing the PC version, but could not get used to the gamepad keybinds. Pressing 'B' to confirm is just ugh :(. I didn't look to deeply to check if you can change it, my impression is that you cannot do it in-game for now at least.

I played it for about a week. I got to AR 23 binging the game. Some observations.

* Easily "refined" "3*" weapons will be superior to 4* or 5* weapons simply because you acquire so many gacha dupes that you'll be able to significantly boost their effective proc-rate.

* For 4 & 5 star characters without any investment it'll be difficult to acquire any constellation upgrades as these too are RNG via the gacha mechanics. Not strictly necessary to enjoy the game, but disconcerting to have the more interesting elements of a simple game be locked behind RNG.

Your source of primo-gems (gacha currency) will eventually dry up to mostly being daily commissions. The chances of getting 5* star characters are low enough that the gacha audience is re-rolling entire accounts to try and start the game out with several S tier characters.

It's a charming game, but the gacha elements take away more than they add to the game. I haven't found any 4* or 5* characters or weapons in the "wild" / open-world. I did find a 5* cooking recipe, but that's not really the same practical value. There's not really a whole lot of depth to the game right now; it may be something worth keeping an eye on but that remains to be seen.

The game has excellent PC performance, a great soundtrack, lots of voice-acting and lots of personality via dialogue. The game has some decent multi-step puzzles later on. The open world elements really expand after you get out of Monstadt.

As far as negatives go the story is okay, but the gacha elements do more to harm the overall experience than add to it. The game is incomplete with less than a 1/3rd of the world developed.
Lacking certain gacha characters like Venti (Anemo/Support) or Deluc (Pyro/Carry) does not feel good. Venti can group mobs for cleave and Deluc is a pyro power-house with low cooldowns whereas Amber is mediocre and XianLing has high cooldowns. It's essentially a PC port of a mobile game.

As true as that is the game freak side was mainly due to crunch, we should stop acting like it’s the devs fault
It would be nice to have a mainline pokemon game that didn't *look* like a cashgrab (the low-resource strictly handheld game). Genshin Impact works hard to try to get people addicted to gambling (only to *not win* non-montetary valued items) while game freak is more lazily banking on its brand. It seems like the same evil, implemented differently.

After seeing a reddit post about how, specifically, Genshin Impact is engineered to get everyone, including 12 year-olds, addicted to burning money, I decided to stop playing it. The story isn't particularly great and it seems like it's starting to turn into a chore to maximize a F2P position. Made it to LVL 21 AR with 8 Characters with their first level cap broken. I can see how the game is attempting to groom me. It's kind of nasty when I try looking at it objectively.

I already paid for Pokemon, and it's a lot more rewarding on the progress/attainability front.

Genshin will always be a never ending, completionist's nightmare. It's a whale killer if I've ever seen one. They will make bank, exploiting addicts and fanatics, while trying to turn people into addicts and fanatics.

Not to often a game is far better than the game it blatantly copies, definitely the case here. Way better than BotW. I still haven't come across a single part where Michael transjacksons are necessary, but I'm still really early in

who is Michael ? Kaeya ?
I needed him for freezing skill, to unlock one of my quest (actually the first real quest of the game, after getting all 4 characters). I had nobody else doing ice in my group.
I hope there will be no required skill with non default character (but I'm sure I'll come across some of these, and I'll just have to rely on free gashapon if I want a specific power).

I'm adventure Lv9, I just unlocked the first bigger area and doing Kaeya's quest.
I'll play until I'm bored or find it unforgiving without paying. I have enough other games to spend time into to not be frustrated stuck in a single one.
