Vita and Wii U almost had the same fate.

  • Both plays the previous gen.
  • previous gen sold very well. Vita and Wii U didn't.
  • both are very good homebrew machines.
  • naming of the console was a bad choice.
  • memory of the devices was a problem in they own way.
  • lack of 3rd party support. even 1st party support is below par.
  • vita killed the handheld for Sony, Wii U killed the home only console for nintendo.
  • lack of ads by they companies

what did i miss?

What's wrong with the name "Vita"? I like it.

PSP 2 would have better imo for advertisements. same problem which the Wii U had. mothers would have brought that new "cool" PSP 2 for they child.

Vita was a fine name, nothing really wrong with it at all beyond maybe being an odd name for a console. It's certainly infinitely better than the ever confusing "Wii U" that every casual thought was just an expensive accessory to the Wii.

The Vita also had half-decent first and third party support (towards the end the thing was pretty much weeaboo heaven with all the VNs and weeb games coming out), the real issue there is simply that Sony pushed all their marketing towards the PS4 and basically ignored the Vita completely, which was a big fuck up on their part. For example, there's some 1500ish games released on the Vita (not including PSP/PS1 titles). You know how many are on the Wii U? 770. A handheld with "nogaemz" sure has a lot more games than a console with "nogaemz" :P

I think they failed for different reasons, though. The Wii U failed because the casual crowd that skyrocketed Wii sales moved on to mobile games (once again leaving really just Nintendo fans as potential buyers, which has always been a smaller market when you compare previous Nintendo console sales to their competitors), they released it at a pretty terrible time with outdated hardware from the start (much like the Dreamcast), and first party support (the thing that basically sells Nintendo consoles) was extremely fragmented with years of draughts in between decent releases.

The Vita, on the other hand, was expensive for a handheld (thanks to its expensive storage options), had basically no mass marketing, the games released initially were all kinda same-y or niche (it really wasn't until like 2014 or so that the indie craze started and kicked off a ton of sales), launched a bit too late (the 3DS was already getting a foothold, with OOT 3D, Mario Kart and the 3D Mario game launching just before the Vita did), and like the Wii U the casual crowd that bought the PSP for portable media consumption and casual games simply moved on to smartphones.

Vita died because Sony didn't learn anything. They touted the "most powerful handheld gaming system" but relied on that aspect a bit too much. The memory card situation was brutal. There's no reason they couldn't have added a MicroSD or even SD card slot. Instead they went proprietary and overcharged. Which was bullshit. The games on the system were fine. Killzone, Sly Cooper collection, Uncharted and so much more. It had a library... Sony just didn't help it survive. It's kind of like kicking your kid out into the cold winter and expecting them to figure it out.

Wii U died for a few reasons. Some argue its the marketing and how people thought it was an optional accessory or something stupid. For me? The design sucked. A thick ass tablet with subpar battery life and a terrible online ecosystem. It had potential, but Nintendo got super lazy all around.

You have made some bold claims in the past but this is out there even for you.

  • Both have no gaems.
This is about all that they have in common, though even that is for different reasons.

Also +1 to the "was not a marketing failure". There were some but good marketing and good name would not have done anything to offset the awful architecture, sub par controls, awful online setup and the like.

I do like my WiiU.
It's one of the most played console at home. And I have 2 sons, 9 and 6 yo.
The bulky WiiU Gamepad makes you feel confident in leaving it between their hands.
It had more than enough games to spend hundred of hours of fun.
Its game backward compatibility lets you play tons of your previous games.
Its hardware backward compatibility lets you save money.
Its own screen frees your TV for other use.
I don't give a fuck about online service.

And i won't add the many uses you get once hacked.

No, really, it was a good machine indeed.

Well if the Wii U had a diffrent name it would have done well and for the Vita Sony just stopped supporting it and focused on the PS4. If the Vita had as much support as the PSP did with the capabilities it would have been well but the $249 price tag and the expensive memory cards is what killed it.

I still prefer my modded vita over my CFW switch because the Vita is better portable than the switch.

it was going to be called psp2, in fact in some games and files it is referenced to psp2, but vita was a good name, learn the meaning of the word, which is funny as it wasnt the case.

ohh and to your first post, it was the cube what killed nintendo on the home console, it was the start of them rehashing cheap old inferior hardware with bs gimmicks to make it sell.

Which is funny because I'm assuming the PS Vita was meant to be a companion device to the PS4, seeing as it had the codename Orbis early in development.

And the funny thing is that the Xbox Series Whatever is repeating the same mistake when it comes to proprietary memory cards...

it is. several games have cross buy and cross save. I think one game that has cross save I can think of is world of final fantasy. also, the software update for the ps4 has orbis in the file name. the ps vita doesn't mention vita anywhere internally that I've seen. it's always psp2.

I put the software updater (swu) on a flash drive:

Except that they're not required AFAIK....

I actually have the memory cards for the phat 360 on my jtag. I think I put my profile file on one of them for easy convenience. there are major problems with reading an hdd over 500GBs using the transfer cable and something like party buffalo.

Well yes and no. With the Vita you had to have one (until the Slim partitioned off 1GB of space for saves, but that's nowhere near enough for digital games which most people used), whereas the Sexbox doesn't need any memory cards since it still has 1TB worth of internal storage. Given that Xboner and lower games can run from a standard external HDD, you could optimally have plenty of space for all of your games, 1TB will be enough for a fair few Sexbox games and I imagine by the time you "run out of space" you could just delete old stuff you finished with anyways.
