If I didn't already feel Atlus made hard RPG like persona or Shin Megami Tensei, SAGA SERIES IS THE HARDEST RPG I EVER KNOWN!
Oh, there's much worse out there – Wizardry IV, for instance. But that's probably cheating; the authors there purposely set out to make something stupidly inscrutable. Drakkhen, maybe.

I remember the ridiculous way Tim Rogers once put it. ("Ridiculous" being his default mode.)

The Final Fantasy player feels much like a young boy being given an electric guitar; he knows that, with practice, he can one day rock the Budokan. The SaGa player, when the bus ride ends and he's home after work sitting against the balcony door with a cigarette and a bottle of beer, feels like an aging hipster who has, literally, one last chance to impress a crowd with his rock and roll. SaGa revels in making the player feel sick and lonely. In its fourth world, the post-apocalyptic one, non-player characters are set up like stick figures or finger puppets; members of a resistance group, they are raging against Suzaku, a giant malicious phoenix who eventually, over the course of four hours, devours and destoys them all one-by-one, as we learn their names. No doubt Kawazu thought this was funny. It's not funny. It's mean. The ten-year-old me wanted to wag my finger at Kawazu like I was his mother and he'd just pushed a kid down the stairs at school. It was a naughty thing to do, and the game just kept doing it, again and again.

Why do you state that people were furious over the ports?
It seemed to me at the time there were reams of articles being put out about how the graphics where sloppily upscaled and filtered. People seemed particularly upset about how background tiles no longer seamlessly connect to one another. See for instance https://www.fortressofdoors.com/doing-an-hd-remake-the-right-way-ffvi-edition/ .

The only differences between the Super NES versions of Final Fantasy 5 and 6 and the PC/Android ports was the graphics, menu system and some text translations. I liked the updated graphics, the menu was okay and other than that I didn't notice many other changes. I would have liked a 3d version like they did for Final Fantasy 3 and 4, but I still think 5 and 6 were decent. Why do you state that people were furious over the ports?

FF5 had an additional dungeon (from GBA) and 4 classes you can't really use since you get it too late. They probably should have made those 4 classes a new game+ feature.
FF6 had an additional dungeon (from GBA) iirc and more censorship (at least in Japan).

The graphics, which are all sprites, have all been redrawn. They aren't simple upscales.

Cool. I had no idea there was major new content like dungeons added. I'll have to look into where they are in the game to make sure I don't miss them on my playthrough. I recently purchased both FFV and FFVI for Android and are already some hours into each.

I might get this as I'm sucker for nostalgia. I don't know if I've played any of these games, but what I mean is retro. I noticed that they have romancing saga 3 on the eshop as well. it's the odd price of $28.99. it looks a bit like Final Fantasy VI graphically.

Why would anyone buy/play this over the full fledged breathtaking remakes these games got on Nintendo DS.
Hell, why aren't THOSE in this collection.

Every collection game on switch feels like a soulless, cheap cash grab.
They're so out of it they made the borders look like freaking game gear

At least there's fan translations for the DS remakes.

I wonder how long until the current rights holder does a lufia collection and fails to include the DS remake ( which is the best game in the series by a long shot.)

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
