So first off hello I suppose! Name’s Eliasmun. And I uh...well you could say I’m in a bit of a pickle.

Felt like setting up homebrew so I could make use of the ACNL save editor (largely so I could bypass Isabelle’s restrictions when it comes to placing down Public Work Projects and actually put them where I want) went on 3ds.hacks and began to follow the guide precisely. Got to the part where I got the ‘B9S install SUCCESS’ message on the top screen...and that was it. My New 2DS XL shut itself off, and every time I’ve tried to turn it back on I’ve only gotten a split second of blue light. I made sure to check, double check and triple check the guide as I went along, so I’m honestly at a complete loss here. Was I just one of the unlucky few? And what can I do to get my console back?

Place boot.firm on root of SD card

You don't actually need a full CFW install for that, but it's a bit late for that now.

Which part of the Guide are you following? Are you using a flashcart?

and every time I’ve tried to turn it back on I’ve only gotten a split second of blue light.
Can you be more precise? Are you referring to the Notificaion light (the one that turns green when you get a Streetpass), the Power light, or the screens themselves?

Does anything different happen when you remove your SD card entirely?

Browserhax2020 and the part involving unSAFE_MODE, no I am not using a flashcart, the blue power light, and no. I took out the SD card and it still would not boot up.

Also I put boot.firm in the root and it did not help. Even tried putting a brand new SD card and it also did nothing to help.

Details, please: do you still get the same flash of the blue power light, or does something else happen?

Also, can you boot into recovery mode?

Sorry lol. Yeah - I still get the same brief flash of blue when I have an SD card in the console and when I don't. Also no. I've tried multiple times to get it into recovery mode but I still get the two seconds of blue power light.

Do these in order until one works.

First, make sure your boot.firm is spelled exactly like that, not boot(1).firm or something.

Second, root is here (right beside Nintendo 3DS):
sdmc:/boot.firm
sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS
This may seem simple but a lot of people mess up this way.

Third, backup everything on your sd card to PC then download SD formatter
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/index.html
Format your sd card with the quick option, then copy everything back. Then try to boot the system.

Just be rest assured: your system is not bricked. The cfw just can't read the boot.firm so it shuts off.

Make sure you have latest Luma3DS version (boot.firm) in the root directory of your micro-SD.
Try a different, FAT32 formatted µSD only containing boot.firm

@zoogie has a point with the naming. If you're using Windows make sure file extensions are turned ON. A file named boot.firm.firm will not work.

Also refer to quad reformat to rule out any possible SD issues.

Good luck!

I always thought the blue notification light was supposed to blink three times when there was an error reading boot.firm, but it seems to me there are a lot of reports like this one lately. Does the blinking-blue-notification-light thing not work anymore?

The power indicator led never repeatedly blinks for anything. I think you're confused with the notification led, which is usually controlled by Nintendo for Streetpass or News notifications. It's a different led in a different spot.

Well I mean to be honest I don’t even care about setting up homebrew anymore. I more just want my console back.

If it does not find boot.firm it will not start.

Please try different SDs (with only the one correctly named file) and use @TurdPooCharger's quad format technique to rule out possible SD related problems.

B9S is already installed – it makes no sense going back to stock once the console boots. After copying the boot.firm to NAND it will act normally even without SD (or defective/corrupted SD).

there's an option or script (can't recall which) that will copy the boot.firm and animation/splash screen (if you have one) to the ctrNAND, so the splash screen will appear and the system will boot if no sd is plugged in. it's the most effective method imo. that's through godmode.

Well I mean I kinda...panicked when it happened. Took all of the stuff off the SD card that you need for homebrew, and it still won’t boot.

Exactly – but the OP isn't saying that the notification LED is blinking. Isn't it supposed to?

b9s is now installed internally to your 3DS NAND. As has been repeatedly stated, you need to have boot.firm on your SD card now in order to boot. (Or at least, until you finish setup.)

Yes - but the problem is I had done just that as suggested by an earlier post, and the console still would not boot.

If all else fails, an ntrboot flashcart can be used to recover an otherwise unbootable 3DS. But you'll need to get one first.

I wonder what went wrong?

Your SD Card is formatted to FAT32, right?

Yeah - tried that about two days ago, with no changes.

I think I’m just gonna accept that my console is a lost cause, and hit up one of the retro game stores near where I live to nab a new one down the line.
