Konami brings Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 back to PC through GOG

Classic Metal Gear games are hitting the PC platform once more, as Konami has confirmed today. The original Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance are now available on modern computers through GOG. Not only that, but a handful of retro Konami games such as Castlevania 1, 2, and 3, along with the original Contra and Super C have also launched on GOG for PC. The classic Castlevania & Contra collection will cost $5.99, and so will Metal Gear, while both Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 are priced at $9.99 each. According to Konami, these games offer better graphics, new options, quick saves, and even new gameplay modes.

You are Snake, a government agent on a mission to regain control of a secret nuclear weapons base from terrorist hands.

Now the international best-selling PlayStation game comes to the PC with better graphics, added features, and new gameplay modes! Unlike anything you've played before, Metal Gear Solid introduces a new genre of gaming where ninja-like stealth and cool head are your best weapons for survival

  • VR Missions Game included!
  • Optional 1st person play mode thrusts you into the action from the moment you suit up.
  • Multiple game controller support and improved quick-save function for ease of play

The 2002 package was only for PC. It never released on consoles, and has no connection to newer incarnations of the games.
It took me a minute to figure out that the Castlevania/Contra collection was indeed originally released in 2002! What a questionable decision. Ports are one thing, but an old, crappy emulated collection is surely made completely redundant by a newer emulated collection.

I find it a little weird GOG didn't give the MS-DOS versions as an option.
I reckon their only purpose nowadays is for people to gawk at them for two minutes and then go play something else.

preety sure they are just gonna do like nintendo did abit increase resolution/framrate if spossible, some new textures here and there and bam, there you have it.

That's what I thought. I really enjoy the original versions though. Even more the MGS1 for PSX rather than The Twin Snakes remake for the GameCube. :)

You shouldn't really get these... They're pretty broken ports from the early 2000s.

Unfortunately GOG tends to do shit like this. Their version of Earth Worm Jim 1 is the MS-DOS version. That version is missing a level and has other problems. Heck even Earth Wotm Jim remastered is missing levels.

Good thing my Sega Genesis still works, sure the Sega Genesis version doesn't have the Brutal level but besides that is the second best version after the Sega CD/Windows 95 version.

As much as I'd hate to shatter everyone's dreams... But these are not new versions of MGS1, and MGS2. There just aren't going to be any new HD graphics, or any new textures. Those are merely the original pc releases of MGS1 and 2 for pc, that used to be playable on windows 98 and xp respectively... And now they've been patched by GOG to run on modern operating systems, just like any other low budget release out there on GOG :grog:

Just think about it... If there was gonna be any kind of porting involved, they may as well have ported MGS3 (which from nintendo's point of view was the only Metal Gear game that was worth the trouble of having it ported to the 3ds ^^). And if any 2 games from the Metal Gear Series are worth porting onto new operating systems, I bet it was gonna be "MGS1+MGS3", not "MGS1+MGS2" :vul2:

Blatant cash grab, these PC ports are terrible. Honestly, just emulate the PlayStation versions or play them on three PS3.

You're absolutely right, I couldn't agree more :) Though, I don't remember the MGS1 port being so terrible... it actually featured improved textures, allowing the game to run on higher resolutions on pc... Give it a shot, you might not completely regret it :)

Can you people stop asking for ports, remasters or remakes? These games are far from obscure and it's easy and cheap to buy a PS2 and/or PS3 to play them the way its meant to be played. All these re-releases, HD collections and ports are nothing but quick cash grabs that break the original games. Even the MGS2 and 3 from the HD collection is crappy compared to the original PS2 games and include less content. I'm sorry but I'm tired of seeing so many classic games being butchered in half baked new releases.
Also things like remaking the games with modern engines will do nothing but eliminate the original atmosphere and feeling. MGS1 was already broken in terms of gameplay when they remade it for the Gamecube, and that was only one generational update.

there is nothing wrong on people wanting a remake on a game that desperately needs one, mgs1 is one of those games that needs a good remake, people nowadays just cant stand those graphics and the game is amazing, so its a shame they will loose out on a great game, while i have no problem since i was born on n64/ps1 days i cant stand atari or even nes graphics, snes is ok so there is where i draw my personal line, but youth this days cant play mgs1 looking like that, they all say it looks awful and has a crapp as hell resolution to display on 4k tvs and they are kinda right.

also why would people buy used ps2/ps3 plus the game disc to play a single game? lol that would be way more expensive than any hd remake ...

some games dont need hd remasters since they were in hd already like ps3 games lol, but a remake can be an amazing thing specialy from a agme that is from ps1/n64 days those need it badly.

No it doesn't, MGS is perfect as is, the gameplay was tailored to the graphics and limitations, if you change one or the other it's no longer the same game. A remake will only destroy its legacy, remember what Star Wars has become...

Then these people shouldn't be playing videogames, they should be watching movies. Also this is stupid, look at Among Us or any other Nintendo game that is selling like hotcake. The graphics of this game makes sense with the gameplay and atmosphere, if you change it then it's no longer the same game. Would you destroy Picasso's paintings just because they are't realistic?

so its a shame they will loose out on a great game
How can you loose out on a game that is still being sold digitally? Only if done intentinally. Those that miss out on this game simply because MuH gRaPhIcs probably shouldn't be playing this game to begin with.

I was born in N64/PS1 era and I can perfectly play Atari 2600 if the game is fun enough (Space Invaders is awesome).
The youth today have Minecraft, Terraria, Among Us, Angry Birds and a ton other indie games with very old graphics style and those games sell very well. We also have emulators that upscale the visuals to HD and 4K. Again, if they can't stand the graphics of a game, they shouldn't even be playing games but watching movies. Games don't have to be the most realistic thing out there, they have to be fun, and as far as I'm concerned the reason MGS1 is fun is because the gameplay is tailored to the limitations of the hardware. An updated remake of the game might be no different than playing your agerage third person shooter. Want proof of this? Then answer me this: how come you all keep talking about MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 but nobody seems to acknowledge that MGS5 is a thing? Why aren't you people asking for MGS5 to be updated for next gen? I'll tell you why: cause unlike MGS1 to 3, MGS5 is a generic TPS with no personality and zero memorable gameplay moments. And you people want masterpieces like MGS1 to become that so you can forget about the game a week after it released.

also why would people buy used ps2/ps3 plus the game disc to play a single game? lol that would be way more expensive than any hd remake ...
I've seen PS3 consoles going for as cheap as 30€ and MGS1 goes for 10€ in the PSN store. A remake of MGS1 would go for 80€ minimum.

Games don't need an HD remaster at all, we need more new HD games, not reselling of rehashes and re-releases.

a remake doesnt destroy the games legacy... look at resident evil remake or resident evil 2 remake, those are amazing same for shadows of the colossus, soyro trilogy, crash trilogy and so on, there are very good remakes out there and the game doesnt loose any legacy whatsoever, those are just graphics being cleaner...

Just becuase a remake exist doesnt mean you need to buy it, if you dont like it dont buy it its easy... Also there is already a mgs remake on the gc called twin snakes the reason people didnt liked it it wasnt becuase the graphics got better but because they decided to change all cutscenes into action matrix style ones, have they kept them the same, the game would have been pure gold.
