Hello all,

About a year ago I tried installing custom firmware on my 3ds XL and couldn't get it to quite work, months later my flatmate needed an SD card and I gave him mine which he promptly lost. I now have a 3ds XL with some custom firmware without the boot files meaning everytime it turns on it can't boot into anything. This may be a lost cause but I thought I'd come here just in case.

Many thanks,
SirSnadwidge

More information please.
  • Does it turn on and boot into Home Menu (maybe with sound only)?
If it turns on:
  • What happens when holding (Start) on Power on?
  • What happens when holding (Select) on Power on?

It doesn't turn on at all, only a blue pulsing light and then off again, start and power on doesn't do anything either.

Put Luma3DS boot.firm file on a FAT32 formatted SD and try booting with that

Put Luma3DS boot.firm file on a FAT32 formatted SD and try booting with that
  • First try latest version
  • If this fails v7.1
  • If this also fails v7.0.5 (the file is named arm9loaderhax.bin there)
Ok it booted with the latest version, is there anyway I can turn my 3ds back to a vanilla one?

yeah that's fair thank you for everyone's help
Nice to read your 3DS boots once again. Seems you did not mess up anything if the console boots by just adding the boot file.

You're not done yet. In order to fully set up everything, create a backup of the system NAND and copying Luma3DS to the NAND (allows booting without SD) you have to do:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/finalizing-setup
  • Make sure boot.3dsx (same archive as boot.firm) in the root of your SD.
  • If GodMode9 does not start:
    • Either put another payload into SD:/luma/payloads (can be the same GodMode9 file renamed to bla.firm)
    • Or use the latest beta of GodMode9
Good luck and have fun!
