Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered's online play will be region locked

AgYglXJ.png

A new tidbit has been revealed regarding the remaster of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, and it's something that fans might not be too excited about. The game's official website recently described how online multiplayer will work, allowing players to play together across all available platforms, whether it's the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, or Android. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered will also let players transfer their saves across the different systems. However, some fine print hidden at the bottom of the page additionally denotes that players will only be able to match up with those in their own region. Despite the easy accessibility and cross-platform play, the game will lock you to whatever region you bought it in.

And if you were expecting to play Crystal Chronicles Remastered locally, that's a no-go as well. Square Enix won't be including that as a feature for the game, as they feel it is better suited to an online experience.

*In online multiplayer mode, a player will only be matched with others in the region specific to player’s software.

I don't understand why some devs still pull this bullshit. To me, region-locking is a form of racism. Or somewhere on that line of discrimination.
But if every region is being locked equally, then who is being discriminated against? To me it sounds more like the opposite; being too race-conscious. "If everyone is segregated into proper ethnic groups, then they're less likely to face microaggressions" or something. That being said, I rather doubt that race or ethnicity played any factor in their decision. I simply can't think of any reasons related to those factors that would prompt such a move. Regardless, I do wish that they wouldn't restrict us so...

This region lock thing has nothing to do with racism. It's a form of DRM.

On topic: I am interested as to why this game is region locked. My guess would be as some of the guys here pointed out is the online doesn't work that well across region. It's possible they didn't have enough time to work on this part of online play as they spent most of time developing the crossplay feature for the online portion and are trying to get this out asap.

Region locking is the sensible thing to do. Wish more games did the same.

WHY?

Trying to minimize ping when you're playing with randoms is something all games do.

100% False.

They reinforce the idea of borders and force people to make decisions based on ethnic preference--I get what you mean.

"If everyone is segregated into proper ethnic groups, then they're less likely to face microaggressions" or something. That being said, I rather doubt that race or ethnicity played any factor in their decision.
"proper ethnic groups" is the racist part. Some people don't fit into that mold so therefore it can never be applied "equally". That being said, their decisions weren't based on race, but ethnicity is usually considered with many aspects of localizing and region-restricting. It's not overt or intended to be racist, per se, but it saves them money.

People complaining about no local play, there never was, that was the point of the GBA connectivity, play it on switch face to face.

People importing the japanese physical copy will be limited to that region... that is bad though
Did you really just say there was never local play? Huh? Then you proceed to talk about GBA connectivity. How did you think it worked? You plug in one GBA and you can play over the air with other players around the world?

You needed the GBA connection (super gimmicky at the time) to play LOCALLY with up to 4 players.

Everyone saying its because of lag . . . Ppl having horseshit internet is much more of an issue than ppl that are far.
I have played PSO2 on the Japanese servers for years and never had any lag issues . . .
Its 2020, most ppl have access to fiber nowadays except those in remote areas so distance is a non issue unlike 20 years ago . . .

I'm sorry, the whole point of the original game, local co-op, has been axed? this isn't a hd release then, it's a feature removed version. How so incredibly disappointing and infuriating. I'm beyond pissed. I have enough switches to play online, but I have to have four nintendo online accounts to play with my 3 friends sitting right beside me? COME ON. What an absolutely shiet thing to do to the fanbase. Really feels like they're spitting in our faces and saying it's for our own good.

Most people? I don't know anyone who has access to fiber. Also, I just looked at a few statistics and unless you live in Korea, Japan or one of a few European countries, fiber is not really an option.

That being said, PSO2 JP worked perfectly for me. A connection shouldn't be that big of a problem nowadays.

It's true that there are many people who do not have access to high speed internet, causing their latency to be lower than others; so pairing based on latency might disenfranchise them. This can still be considered by a protocol integrated in the program itself to pair despite latency, if the past few attempts haven't encouraged better results. Ultimately, pairing based on region is/should be considered obsolete/counter-intuitve.

That's because PSO2 opts to do almost everything locally, and since you don't interact much with other players directly, it's usually fine. It can desync pretty badly though, where you'll see your ally hitting the air and enemies in a completely different part of the room taking damage. Games where stuff needs to be more synchronized can't really do that.
