So I just saw on amazon that they sell used Switches 2017 edition from "Amazon Warehouse" and I was wondering if they could be modded.
From what I found lurking here it seems as long as the Switch is before August/ July 2018 it's should be unpatched but I would like some kind of confirmation before proceeding with my purchase.

Has anyone bought a used 2017 edition from Amazon Warehouse that can confirm that for me, please?

If the hardware is really from 2017, it's surely unpatched. The only way to tell would be to get the serial number beforehand. I don't know how hard it would be to get that information from Amazon.

There's a different product page for the 2019 edition, so that's a thing... At the very least I know that It's not a marika for sure

Yeah Amazon is the best when it comes to returns. You can take it a Kohl's if you have one and even return it there, or to a ups store you don't even need any packaging they just scan a bar code and send it for you.

When they say 2017 they mean the release version that came out in 2017 (as in not Mariko). It doesn't mean they all came out in 2017. The 2019 version means Mariko. It's not guaranteed to be unpatched but honestly you could probably keep sending them back until you get an unpatched unit. Personally, I just recommend people to go to game stop. Most employees there are cool and will look through the bunch for one with an unpatched serial number. Or just get a Mariko or patched unit, and have @ModderFokker619 install an SX chip for you if you can't solder because unpatched units on eBay are getting expensive. I know Amazon has a good return policy and all But if you don't get an unpatched switch in a few systems they will probably eventually ask why you keep buying them and sending them back. I wish places like Amazon could advertise if a system was patched or not but they are an official nintendo retailer so nintendo probably would not let them advertise that

Already checked, the few they have left are all mariko or patched.

Thank you guys for the replies. I also found on Ebay a guy who sells his switch for about 360 € and posted pictures of everything, including the initials of the serial number and it's within the safe unpatched range. The thing is, the guy has a "no refund policy" so I'm kinda worried, from the pictures it looks well mantained and he guaranteed he never did any modding on it.

What would you guys do?

360€? I would tell him to stick it somewhere, buy a better Mariko and then ask @squee666 to mod it. Hell, buy it on Amazon and set the shipping adress to him directly? :P

Well it's what the switch is worth.
Agree to disagree. I would claim they are now worth a bit less since the new Switches are so much better with the Battery. No crappy controllers that might need repairs right away and most likely a better screen (not sure about the last one).

Isn't the SX core expensive, though? I'm still student so I don't have a lot of money unfortunately...

Yes but if you buy from amazon.it new mariko switches cost 300€ and the sx core is 50€ if you mod it yourself, add in installation fee it probably comes around for a total of 400€

The Main difference is the Battery Life, the Display is a bit brighter and has warmer colors, the system overall does not get that warm. And for the Controllers its that the battery is different, but it does not indicate it has no drift issues. My switch joy cons from 2018 still have no drift issues btw.

The big loss with mariko though is you might never ever get dual boot support for anything.
Idk if ubuntu will ever support, lineage i heard had no upcoming plans to support, and lakka has been abandoned, so you can pretty much wave goodbye to dolphin emulation & android games natively.
Id honestly take an ipatched over a mariko for now if i had to choose.

Ok for now I'm going for the one on Amazon. I'll just buy it and hope it's unpatched, since it has amazon prime delivery it shouldn't take too long. Thank you every for partecipating in the discussion.

Fingers crossed...

On this subject do any switch lites actually use the older chips ipatched? Could see them becoming an item of value if dual boots never support the newer chips.
I imagine they are all mariko.
