Oculus devices will require Facebook logins, the company announces

Oculus, a Facebook-owned company, has announced today that it will terminate support for signing in its devices with Oculus accounts in favor of Facebook accounts. But don't fret as these changes don't get into effect immediately. Starting this October 2020, first time log-ins on an Oculus device will need to do so with a Facebook account. Existing users will have the option to merge their Oculus and Facebook accounts, or continue using their Oculus accounts for a period of two years. After January 1, 2023, support for Oculus accounts will completely end. Those who don't merge their accounts by that time can still continue using their Oculus device, but will require a Facebook account for full functionality.

Of note, the company mentions that "all future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account."

This move appears to be made to streamline Facebook’s management across its platforms. The announcement reads that rather than having a separate Oculus Code of Conduct, Oculus will adopt Facebook’s Community Standards as well as a new additional VR-focused policy. Another reason given is that a single login will make it "easier to find, connect and play with friends in VR" as well as allow Oculus device owners to try "Facebook-powered social experiences" such as live streaming gameplay on your Facebook timeline, making calls with parties and joining events. It could also help the company ban spam accounts.

This decision also goes against what Palmer Luckey, the creator of the original Oculus, said upon the acquisition: "You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift".

What do you think of this announcement? Will it make you reconsider before purchasing a new Oculus device?

This news makes me feel old, i remember signing up for an early adopters program for the rift years ago prior to it's initial release and agreeing to pay $250 for an initial headset. I backed out the day fuckerburg bought the company knowing at the time where ever he was would be forced ads and spyware. Then snowden came and confirmed it, followed by hundreds of tech blogs uncovering the malware the fb app really was.... So i guess being 2020 I'm surprised this comes as a surprise to anyone

I have a Windows MR headset and was an inch away from jumping ship and buying a Quest, but I've gotta rethink it now. I deleted my facebook account years ago because there is literally no need for one anymore. Facebook is an irrelevant platform for communicating with anyone that isn't over 40 like if i really want to know what my relatives are up to, i'll just call them rather than look at their terrible posts

Only people who are surprised by this, or are absolutely complacent and fine with it, are mouth breathers who are either just blissfully ignorant or just don't care. This is why Facebook gets away with this crap, too, because they know people are going to always use it, and selling every bit of information it collects (and yes, Facebook does actively record voice data for this as well) prints fuck tons of money for them. The good news is that there seems to be a lot of people who are starting to get sick of it, so hopefully there will be a mass exodus in the near future, heh.

I think the main reason some of us are surprised is explained in the OP.
This decision also goes against what Palmer Luckey, the creator of the original Oculus, said upon the acquisition: "You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift".

Maybe surprised isn't the right word.. after Facebook bought Oculus I figured they were using the data in the exact same way. So it's the same thing, just under a different name. I tried to warn people on Reddit and VR forums but some ignored it.

An Odyssey Plus has better specs compared to any Oculus HMD in almost every category, even price. Except no wireless, but there are wireless HDMI options coming out. The Pimax headsets are probably great too but more expensive (for a good reason).

noooooo the device i bought, knowing that it would require an account, is now changing the name of the website my account is for!
how could this be happening, this is an outrage!

The issue is that it’s Facebook, for example, they may want you to upload a photo of yourself to ‘prove’ you’re real person.

Yay DRM and censorship.

Obviously I hope it will be bypassed but I won't be upset if it is not.

I am however drawn to wonder what the the VR landscape will look like and whether we will end up with something there. Granted VR will have to actually produce something of merit before then.
Also wonder what homebrew builds will be like -- between 3d printers and ubiquitous high res small screens presumably being a thing in electronics vendors (as opposed to cannibalising a phone or something) I imagine things will be happening there.

There are already a few ways to totally bypass all oculus DRM checks. Hopefully it won't change much when they switch to facebook. I woudln't link a legit account if you are going to crack games tho.

There's even a new (As of April) "Revive Based LivOVRPlatform Emulator" that will let you play any oculus title that doesn't include Denuvo. Even includes cloud save support like lots of oculus games like to require.

Found on a certain steam underground site. A "Rin" forum, if you will. Works great on Steam and WMR headsets. Should work with sideloading on oculus too.

Edit: @FAST6191 have you played Boneworks yet? Half life alyx? Original doom in VR? Obviously these aren't Oculus exclusives but hot damn, they are the best VR titles to date and they are amazing.

I have the original Oculus Rift (actually two of them), I also don't have a Facebook account, does this apply to me? or is it only future devices?

95% of my games are through SteamVR, so i'll sacrifice the other 5% if need be, can't be bothered messing around with all the different Facebook privacy settings to stop random people i knew 20 years ago from friending me just 'cos, and whatever else that platform does.

I just wanna play muh games.

EDIT: Nevermind, just read " After January 1, 2023, support for Oculus accounts will completely end."

Guess i'll save up for an Index2 or whatever is around at that time, the Rift will be well out of date by then.

You'll be fine with the steamVR games for sure. You'll be able to play the oculus games until 2023, or you have to link a facebook account.

Well, this basically excludes anything from Oculus as a viable way of playing Half Life Alyx.

Unless there's a driver or some way to make a PS VR work on PC, it's game over for me. :(
Don't worry, Steam games aren't gonna become unplayable w/o a facebook account. Just Oculus games. It's still unclear.

Even if you're using psvr on pc, you can still use it for steam vr. This shouldn't effect Alyx at all..

Getting personal, Alyx was excellent but no HL3. Really fun but Boneworks is better.

Edit: Wow, amazon has odyssey plus at ~600$?! don't fall for that shit. No headseat should cost more than USD$250, unless it's the Index. Check ebay instead. Several Odyseey Plus-es for ~200.

Self admitted Half Life fanboy, here. And can't say that my previous experiences with the current crop of VR thus far hasn't exactly been positive either. But of the two different ecosystems, the PS VR might be decidedly low-res, but it was responsive, which is more than I can say about the original Vive unit. I have zero interest in ever getting a PS4, or anything newer than a PS3 from sony.

OG Vive was too laggy, to the point of causing me more nausea and discomfort. Nobody anywhere has an oculus to try, and for damn sure nobody has an Index either to see if it even warrants its heinous asking price.
