I had a older 3ds for a few years, and sold it recently to get a new 3ds xl. I backed up all my saves on my old system, and when i went to restore them on the new 3ds it coudn't even find them. Then when it did it either wouldn't load the game or just said the save was corrupted.

so why would nintendo have a option to backup your saves if it will be useless? so you can only use it on the system you back it up on?

I think the only way to get them back is if you have movable.sed or a NAND backup, which will have the file. it shows up as SEED in hex.

cheating? people were already hacking the system, and if i had known it was like that i would have backed it up another way. Still doesn't make any sense, because i went to another site to get some saves and they didn't work either. i think it might be the way i modded the system.

I don't know the specifics. someone else might, but it's a way to read the sd card content from another 3ds I believe.

Ya, and people got banned. Use your brain, its not that hard to understand nintendo wants to reduce cheating in any game. The other sites dont work since they are likely gateway format, yes those ones need to be decrypted while in gateway mode, If you dont have gateway those too are useless to you.

The system still got hacked in the end. I'll just have to remod it a guess.
no shit there. And nintendo still bans you if you outright cheat online. Thats not going to be something that will change.

Its the same as saying you would allow cheating on a console you made and just dont give a shit. there would be no encryption protocols. You would likely want to prevent cheating, thats what nintendo did.

Since you have your movable.sed, you can open your SD card backup with ninfs. (You will also need boot9.bin, but you can dump that from any 3DS or just find a copy floating around the Internet - every copy of boot9.bin is the same.)

ninfs will decrypt the files, but after decryption you will still have to unpack the decrypted files with 3ds-save-tool before you can use the save data with JKSM or Checkpoint. (While you can use ninfs to re-encrypt them for your new SD card on your new console, you will still have to use Godmode9 to fix the CMAC of the re-encrypted file, and a few games – mainly Animal Crossing and the Pokemon games – use anti-save-restore, so it is easier just to use 3ds-save-tool.)

An alternative to ninfs and 3ds-save-tool is save3ds, but it is not easy to work with as it has no GUI. (But then, neither does 3ds-save-tool.)
