I too think it should be about higher frame rate. 60fps should be a minimum on these next systems.

A beautiful game fluctuating between 20-30 fps will not feel as satisfying as a game running at a higher framerate. It's extremely obvious going between Demon's or Dark souls on PS3 @~30fps and PC @ 60fps.

4k, 8k should be the last goal for next gen games, but I know it'll end up being 30fps 4k default for PS5.. If we are lucky we'll see 60fps 1080p as an option at least.

But games get preorders from trailers and screenshots.. so graphics will win over framerate yet again. Hopefully I'm wrong, but it's what just happened to Halo Infinite.

I would argue that in the long run SNES to Nintendo 64 was a downgrade. The Nintendo 64 has some of my favourite games on it but I would not play them on actual hardware today. Sub 30 fps games feel uncomfortable to play. Low resolution 3D games combined with blurry textures and composite video look too blurry. Nintendo 64 games have not aged well.

1:22 to 1:42 illustrates my point.

At the time switching to 3D was the right decision. Nintendo would have been critisised for being primitive if they released 2D games on their next-gen console. But now A Link to the Past looks way better than Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker makes a good analogy here. At the time the game was critisised for its cell-shaded art style but aged far better than other games of its time and is now revered for it. Yoshi's Island demonstrates that a bad 3D system can produce amazing 2D graphics.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 support HD resolutions and digital video which is a big plus but I still wouldn't play them today. This is largely because they struggle to maintain 30fps but also because they don't have enough power to realise developers' artistic visions.

Yeah I agree on the N64 in the long run.
At the time though, seeing Mario in 3D was mindblowing.

Simple: If we don't buy them then they don't make them anymore. Money. Greedy. That's simple! They need our money to keep it going. Without us then what's the use ? Greedy, greedy and greedy. Money and power! Obviously. We are the reason they are rich! And what we got ? Those stuff! SAD!

PS360 still holds up for me. Also usually comes with some actual levels, content and a lack of microtranactions, if not no online focus then still something of a single player one. PS4/xbone homogenous pap with no content laden with microtransactions, could have been nice but really wasn't -- if I am to put together a collection of this generation I have no real idea what I would pick and if I ignore remakes of last gen stuff then I am going to struggle to go beyond about 5 games and even those I would not note someone as missing out or on bother to replace should they be lost.

N64 wise. The games do, the console doesn't -- if I have had cause to play the games again on another system when ported to them (or PC if it was not a radically different game a la forsaken, turok and the like) I have still liked them, the N64 blurry slideshow... can't do it.

"vision of the artists". Every artist always wants more, been that way probably since cave paintings. Limitations can make things fun but always going to be the way so I care less there.

As far as the virtues of 60fps/50fps. From where I sit its only real merit is a drop from 60 to something a bit lower like 45 is not really noticeable where 30 to 15 is.
If however 30fps gets me longer draw distances, more things on screen and the people doing it coded it vaguely properly rather than coupling input to screen refresh, better yet actually doing proper motion blur (not just smear intermediate frames evenly with no respect for distance and speed) then 60 is mostly just a number, 100+ even more unless you are on CRT or maybe VR.

Keep in mind for Next Gen most games are NOT coming out this year. 2021 and beyond are basically when decent games are going to be released it is probally better to wait for a game bundle pack vesus just getting the system alone with no games.

I know the answer is graphics.....

thats not correct, yes graphics improve but its not all about graphics.

the point of making new consoles is because its a business but if you really dont know why, care to go back to the PS1 and compare lets say Tomb Raider to the Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I think the issue with Next Gen is all they talk about is 4K and faster load speeds. The important issues are consoles are going to move away from the shitty dongle and let us use real bluetooth just like for phones and computers. PS1-PS3 you say major differences we went from CD to Blu Ray but from PS4-PS5 the differences are kinda small we still are using bluray and maybe graphic increase are by 25% and load times improved by 50% it's like getting a 2017 corvette and now you have a 2020 model. There is nothing wrong with Next Gen because PS4/Xbox one are like 7 years old and some of the games are starting to struggle with FPS.

My number 1 issue with Next Gen is they "duped" us on this gen. GT6 was supposed to be on PS4 , GTA 6 was supposed to be on PS4/XB1 even the spiderman game and horizon with Mostor Sport 8 and SOD3 those can be handeled on PS4 Pro/XB1 X. We recently gotten the revised hardware not too long ago and they are basically ditching it. Hence if PS4 Pro/XB1 X never exisited it would really be a need to get next gen but seeing how they ditched those units after paying $400 I would be highly upset. It makes you want to hold out because what if in 3 years we get better 8K we would end up getting a PS5 Pro and etc.. That's why i'm going to sit and wait for a revised PS5 Pro or Series-X Pro I refused to get duped again.

We need another system because as games progress they become more demanding and more demanding to the point where the normal consoles we have today cant handle them, there needs to be a new console generation to further gaming development and gaming in general.
is this so hard to figure out?? we get it, 8th gen sucked
Just because 1 gen wasnt all that great doesnt mean video games should just end
If you really arent excited for the PS5 or XSX just get a gaming PC

Technology advances all the time, and PC hardware doesn't wait for consoles to catch up. It makes porting PC games much harder when there is such a disparity between the raw power as well.
The current consoles might have nice visuals, but they could be even better. Framerates especially could be better. PC gamers have been accustomed to high framerate displays for a while and consoles are still stuck with 60hz (where often the games themselves only run at 30fps)

I can't complain about them making more consoles, the average lifespan of a console generation is something like 6 years, which is a lifetime compared to phones which receive new models on a yearly basis, and PC hardware which sees a new generation of CPUs and GPUs every 1-2 years. I think 6 years is very reasonable, and I don't mind at all paying for the next thing when that comes out, especially since they're very reasonably priced compared to modern smartphones and PC hardware, and you get a BIG improvement in the visual fidelity with each new generation.

Highly unlikely IMO
The graphical difference between PS4 and PS5 is huge enough to the point where i don't think they'll need a PS5 pro. it wasnt like 360 to ps4 where the only difference was resolution and shading- we're getting shit like UE5 with all the added benefits of UE5 (Nanite, Lumen, and 3d sound) haptic feedback, raytracing, kraken compression, and SSDs. also, sony and microsoft were smart enough to ditch the shitty ass jaguar architechture and use way more powerful, competent CPUs. With all that technology packed into the PS5 compared to what we got from PS3 to PS4 (an unresponsive, shitty touchpad and 1080p, yay!!!) i have a feeling that won't be likely.

Please bring it back to 5 years like in SNES to PS1 to PS2, i hate having to wait such long times just to see a new gaming console!!!!

NES to SNES - amazing difference
Going from SNES to N64/PS1 - amazing difference
N64/PS1 to DC/PS2 e.t.c. - amazing difference

For me it was like this:

C64 to Amiga: amazing difference, like night and day.

Amiga to SNES: meh, Street Fighter II Turbo is fantastic but most games are graphically not much better than the best Amiga games.

SNES to PS1: meh, Toshinden and Jumping Flash are spectacular but the polygons are so raw, the characters so blocky and jaggy, the resolution so low, the textures so warped and pixellated... graphics is overall messy (Resident Evil was fantastic though).

PS1 to PS2: blown away, now this is graphics (also the PS2 had tons of top quality games, it really was the golden age of home gaming).

PS2 to Xbox360: graphics is good but why games are so slow and stiff? And where are all those Japanese masterpieces gone?

Xbox360 to PS4: a solid upgrade, animations are less stiff, faces are more detailed, illumination is better and it's good to see more detailed and complex environments, like actual grass instead of just the soil covered with a green texture with some wisp of grass here and there.

Games still have performance problems though, even if less serious than the previous generation.

For me, 360/PS3 was where gaming reached it's graphical potential. I was and am happy with the hardware on those consoles.

It depends of what kind of games they have to make run. For cartoonish games like Super Mario that graphical power may be enough, but if you aspire to some realism you can't get away with that kind of hardware.

Now, PS4/XO and PS5/XS just improve upon better graphics and framerate. You don't see a graphical jump from SD to HD like you

Actually, the jump from SD to HD was not that big, resolution aside. The bigger jump was in the previous generation.

Thing is , the videos work fine in the Edge Dev and Canary builds. But whatever the fix they made was, has never been pushed to Beta or Stable builds. Its been that way for as far back as I tested. Which was Edge 84. They are on 125 now.

@RedColoredStars, Yeah, and I was in quite a mood at that time. I would consider choosing Firefox or Opera instead, been using Firefox for over 7 years now than Chrome.

Tried contacting Nintendo to see if they can reach out to MS about it. But Nintendo said the videos are working fine. Without enough people saying no, they don't work fine, it will never get fixed.

I don't think Nintendo will know anything about troubleshooting Edge. They mostly do technical support regarding their console family.
