I initially had an issue and received the error message "USB not initialized. Switching to channel list mode." At this point, the USB loader was working fine, as I was in this app when I received the error. My problem was with how I formatted and wrote the ISO game image to my USB drive.

I fixed this by formatting my SD card with my computer again (fat32), and then I used WBFS Manager 3.0 to format it again. I then used WBFS Manager 3.0 to add the ISO to the USB drive. Worked like a charm!

Also... Always remember to extract your .zip and .rar files.

I had recently encountered and solved this problem.
I got the same "USB Device not initialized. Switching to channel list mode." despite being successfully formatted by WBFS (version 3, 64-bit).

However I was using a no-name USB drive (64 GB).
When I used WBFS to format a Kingston brand USB drive (64 GB),
everything worked.

link for you : https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List

Note that having the device marked as compatible is not necessarily right.
Some manufacturer are making new models without changing the name of their product. what you want to verify is the PID/VID to be sure you have the same product ID.

also, the list is old, and most likely used WBFS partition format. Flashdrives have issues with other format.
still, prefer a real external HDD instead of flashdrives.

My hard drive was working perfectly fine on the Wii. Now, I successfully hacked my Wii U and was going to use Usbloader GX on the vWii. I changed nothing on the hard drive that worked on old Wii. But I keep getting Device not initialized. Switching to channel mode. I tried Wii flow but I can't get it to work either.

wiiu has handicaped power supply through usb doors, so you need an y cable or an hdd with its own independant power suply.

Hello all,

I came across this issue but never found a resolution. I stumbled across this resolution and wanted to share. I have an original Wii & was getting the dreaded USB not initialized. The HDD was read in Nintendont and WiiXplorer just not USB Loader GX. Forgive me for not knowing the correct verbiage but I will try to explain the best I can.

I have USB Loader GX on my Wii home screen I also had a copy of USB Loader GX on the Homebrew channel. I had isolated the issue to USB Loader GX and wanted to just reinstall. I deleted USB Loader GX from Homebrew channel, launched USB Loader from my Wii home screen and voila! My USB is now recognized! If this solution is out there somewhere I missed it. I hope this helps someone it is frustrating to deal with.

Thank you.:)

The Y Cable I bought arrived today, I tested it but it didn't seem to fix the problem; I'm still getting the error. Am I doing something wrong?

Here's the Y Cable I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ZUE6PVE?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Edit: Going to options > Hard Drive Settings and selecting Game/Install Partition fixes the problem

Your Cable is perfect,it it does not do any harm.:)
(If you maybe have/or get a Wii U it will also serves you very well.)

Great, you fixed it and got the Solution for your Issue,a "Setting"...
Thank you for sharing your Solution with us.:yay:

May I ask please how is your HDD "recognized (GPT or MBR) ?

Maybe it have more than One Partition on it ?

Thank you.:)

Heyo, I just started having this problem now as well. I was storing games on a 16gb usb stick, but with so little storage it quickly ran out. I then bought two 64gb usb sticks for games. So far, I have only used one. I have put fairly large games on the 64gb usb like Super Smash Brawl, and Xenoblade on it, and whenever I put in the wii, it said "not initialized changing to channel mode." Well normally I had solved that problem by exiting USB loader and reentering it. But just recently I downloaded Metroid Prime Trilogy on it. This is the biggest game I have downloaded on it yet, at 7gb. After finishing downloading it from VIMM'S, I use 7-zip, and then used Wii Backup manager (I have found Backup manager to work better than WBFS manager.) I then put it into my wii. Remember, this is the same 64gb drive I have been using. Well this time when I put it in, it said "not initialized." I wasn't surprised, but after exiting and reentering, it gave me the same message. So i don't know what is wrong. Is it the game, Backup Manager, usb drive, or GX loader? I've read most comments on this forum, but I feel that many of the answers don't pertain to me. (I am using an original wii. To be real technical, a black wii that came wii new SMB, and SMG soundtrack disk. I doubt it, but maybe it is a hardware problem??)
