Next-Gen Poll: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X?

PS5 vs XBSX GBAtemp Poll.png

It’s been about a week since we got a look at what games will be playable on the Xbox Series X; a couple of weeks after the PlayStation 5's own showcase aired. We now have a better idea as to what titles to expect from each next-gen console. Even if more details and games will be revealed in the coming months, we can already appreciate what each console has to offer in terms of games, features and specs. So how about a poll to see which console you'll more likely pick up? Before making a decision, let's roundup each console's features and games!

PlayStation 5

Sony was relatively tight-lipped when it came to news of the PS5. First it revealed the logo, then the controller’s design and some specs. We only got a look at the consoles during its Future of Gaming event in June. And yes, I used consoles in plural because there will be two editions of the PS5: a regular one with the optical disc and a Digital Edition.

So let’s see what Sony has to offer in terms of specs and games for next-gen gaming!

Featured games

Right, what are specs without games? Sony had quite a lot to show during its Future of Gaming event from Demon's Souls Remake through a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn to the trippy Bugsnax. Here’s a highlight reel or if you wish to watch the full event, head here:

It’s good to note that while these games are planned for a PS5 release, not all of them will be available this year or even next. Moreover, not all will be console exclusives, so PC or Xbox gamers will be able to experience some of the same games shown here.

Xbox Series X

Compared to Sony, Xbox was more open about its next-gen console. By the time Sony only revealed the PS5 logo, we already had a detailed look at the Xbox Series X hardware. While Sony has confirmed two versions of the PS5, Xbox has only revealed only one version of its next Xbox. However, recent leaks suggest that Microsoft is also planning multiple iteration of its next-gen console.

Now, let’s see what has been touted as “the most powerful console ever” packs.

Featured games

Oddly enough, when Xbox shared the first look of games for its new console, it went for indie and third-party titles rather than first party games. However, last week we got a look at those first-party games such as the anticipated Halo Infinite, a new RPG from Obsidian and a new Fable teaser. Check out the highlight reel below or the full event here:

Your choice

While we have much more information about these consoles than previously, a lot is still unknown. Firstly, we don’t have any official information regarding the pricing of those next-gen consoles. This leaves a lot to speculate about. How much would you be willing to pay for a brand-new console in 2020? Additionally, an exact release date has yet to be announced, other than a planned ‘Holiday 2020’ window.

But it’s safe to say that you should start saving if you want to be among the first to enjoy next-gen console gaming. So which one will be your pick based on what we know so far? And do share what led to your decision below!

The thing with PC's you get them to pirate games you don't really get them to buy games. It absolutly makes no sense to pay above $1000 for a gaming PC if you are going to buy games from steam lol You could have taken that same $1000 and bought a PS4 and Xbox One with the games that you want. I don't want to say that PC's are overrated but they cost alot if you want to stay up to date. I have a gaming laptop and I still prefer my consoles. Only good thing about my gaming laptop is the free games and emulators I never bought a single game off steam I only bought it to pirate.

Fair enough, though you can do much more things with a PC than just game. With a console, you can't do that. There is also general upgradability with a PC. I'll say it again, I wish console manufacturers stopped making consoles, and focused on delivering budget PC's so there would be no exclusives, just every game on one platform.

This is easily the dumbest take one can have about PCs. Who buys a PC specifically to pirate games? I'd love to see where your source is on this. Also what does the price of your PC have to do with buying games from Steam? Huh? Ohhhh, you got a gaming laptop (lol) to pirate games. So that means everyone else has to be a pirate, too? Nice logic. There's plenty of reasons to go PC over Xbox or Playstation. This next gen only enforces that. Considering that Xbox is pushing its library on PC, so aside from just wanting the console or some of the backwards compatibility? You can get the same experience on a PC running Windows 10. In before some clown comes in bashing that...

On topic. PS5 is the clear choice this time around for the aforementioned reason of first party Xbox titles coming to PC. That's only if I have any interest in the their first party titles. Some, I do. Just not enough to justify the purchase. Might trade in both of the Xbox Ones in my house and pick up a Series X for the wife, who really doesn't need a PC for gaming at this time.

Neither! A lot of the games on either one will also be available on Steam or otherwise on PC.

And I'm sure that it won't be too long until Nintendo reveals their next console offering, so I'm going to hold out until then. Can't wait for the Nintendo Switch3DSUCube64!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Nintendo is planning on a six-year lifespan for Switch. So at most I'd expect a "Switch Pro" to be announced in the next couple years, but no "Switch 2" until 2023 at the very earliest.

That's ridiculous and stupid. There's many more reasons to get a PC other than just piracy. They basically have the best backwards-compatibility of all time. If a part breaks, you can easily replace the part, or even use it as an excuse to upgrade your machine. Rather than buying completely new consoles every couple of years, you can slowly upgrade a PC over time. Throw in a bigger hard drive, 6 months later maybe a faster CPU, more RAM, a new graphics card, etc. And a huge difference is that I don't forfeit my warranty simply by opening the case on my PC.

PC games go on sale regularly. There's no need for piracy when the same game that costs $60 on the Xbox or Playstation stores costs $15 or even less on Steam during their seasonal sales.

I have my PC hooked up to the television in my living room, and that's what we use 95% of the time. A lot of games will work with the Xbox One controller with little or no additional setup. I have a wireless keyboard and trackpad combo. I can easily access Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and just about any other online streaming content you can think of. I can surf the web much better than any console will let you experience. And yeah, I use the daylights out of emulation, not so much because of piracy but because it allows me to leave my physical games in storage.

Probably would lean more for the Series X, if anything, but neither one's brought out anything I gotta have yet. I'm just not that interested in any of the games for the PS5 has right now. Plus, we don't even really know how much these things are gonna cost, and that plays a big part into my decision of whether or not to buy one.

PS5.
But I probably don't intend to catch it anytime soon, I don't even know how much it will cost here in Brazil.

I often see "You can do other things!" as pro-PC argument, but thing is, most people who buy consoles already have those non-gaming needs covered either by smartphones or older computers. It's neat to have a powerhouse as your multimedia machine, but not much of a selling point in large scheme of things.

Other people above me have made better points, I was kinda braindead when writing that.

@Memoir/ @RHOPKINS13

I am aware of what a gaming PC/Laptop an offer I do own one. It is just like a car a PC will require maintenance to keep upgrading parts and etc versus buying a console for a flat rate price and you can enjoy that generation of gaming. For those reasons "IMO" for me I had got alot of value out of my gaming laptop by pirating games and using emulators outside of that I just use my Galaxy Tab S4 even with my S4 if I wanted to I can stream my PS4/Xbox One S and play retro emulators from NES all the way up to the Wii. I don't want to use my gaming laptop as a regular computer for regular needs my Tab S4 covers all of those bases. It's kinda better because it is touch screen with a pen and if I want to get fancy I can just activate Samsung Dex and whip out the monitor and the wireless keyboard and mouse.

I respect that you two buy your PC games and etc.. but I know alot of people that just buy the hardware just to pirate the games. But to what @JoJoJoestarMario said yes Next Gen need to be offering more than just gaming. Again I just don't see the urgent need to buy next gen especially when we received PS4 Pro and Xbox One X like 3 years ago what happened to using that refined hardware seems like they just ditched it instead of supporting it. Next gen feels so Meh doesn't even feel special.

PS4/Xbox One was the base models and the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S/X was the refined models. If there was no 4K support for PS4/Xbox One "Maybe" I can see the need for next gen since that supports 4-8K but considering we recently received the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S which may I add those prices was like $400 for the pro and X you kinda got ripped off since they had ditched it after 3 years moving to next gen.

Next gen is the first one where performance won't feel totally gimped compared to PC gaming. XB1X's 6 tflops is good enough to maintain 60 FPS at 1080p for current-gen games, but PS4 Pro can only manage 45 FPS in "performance mode" most of the time. We're talking right around double the power of XB1X for both PS5 and XBSX, and closer to 10x the power of base PS4/XB1. A jump from 1080p@24 FPS to 1440p@144 FPS on its own is life-changing, let alone the decrease in loading times from 15-20 seconds down to 1-2 seconds. Install and update times will also be exponentially faster with an SSD.

In short, the hardware in PS4 and XB1 was already outdated on launch. This time around, PS5 and XBSX are basically $1200 gaming PCs with an MSRP of $500 to $600.

Series X, I have a big catalog with Xbox, 360 and One. Can't afford just to lose all my backwards compatible. Maybe PS5 when the first revision comes out.

I want a PS5 because it has this amazing feature that video game consoles are supposed to have; games.
