original nds flashcards tend to exploit a hidden autoboot feature within the nds firmware iirc, (they also contain a usually malformed header), so they autoboot regardless of what the console is set to, aswell the original nds reads the cards slightly differently than a dsi or 3ds, with the latter they have to use a fake header of a real game, then once the console thinks its a legit game, the card boots the kernel instead

its been a very long time since this post but i seriously have to say thank you! i just thought to clean up my DS from my childhood (new case and screens) and thought to get R4 card from ali express too but i got a basic ass R4 card with no details on what kind it was and my sticker had also been taken off or just never added. I tried around 40 different kernels from a repository somewhere and managed to only find 1 non discript R4 firmware which couldnt load any games. I've gotten way ahead of myself and it boots but not tried a game yet lol.
