Speaking of N64, has anyone gotten Super Mario 64 hacks like Star Road to work?
They all crash for me. It seems to be a problem with extended Mario 64 roms.

I can get to the Mario face screen, but when I press start it crashes right before loading the file select screen.

Decompressed Zelda 64 roms work fine though.

I like Rayman, but yeah, it's about the only good game on a pointless crap console. But maybe the Phillips CDi, or the 3DO are even worse consoles, not sure. Ah, I'm just happy that N64 runs smoothly.

the latest version of star road is designed to work on a real nintendo 64 and when I use that version it began to work for me. Maybe try updating your rom. I do not like star road as much as last impact. That does not work for me in Horizon but I can play it if i use android. But it is kinda slow. So i prefer my pc.

without a doubt cdi is the worst. Worse than 3do and worse than jaguar but that’s only if you play the zelda games. Those games are so bad. I am obsessed with getting them working on switch but so far no luck. I can play them on my og xbox though. As for jaguar i like tempest 2000 and defender. Both are pretty solid. 3do has some ok games as well actually. In android switch plays 3do very well and horizon isnt bad.

this thread is what our scene needs. People sharing suggestions and people not being called noob or stupid. For me it is all about the games. Like one thing i noticed early on is if someone could get something to work they would like horde the knowledge of what romset or settings they used. I say heck with that. I hate that personally.

I had some issues with Mupen64 Plus until I realized SysDVR was the problem. If you've installed it, there's a good chance all the slowdowns and stutterings are coming from there

thanks for the suggestion, i'm not overly familiar with that, if there's a chance I did install it, how would I get rid of it?

Is there a standalone core for N64? .

No

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Is it safe for the switch to have the IV refresh (overclock) at 1500 all the time when using mupen64 plus-next for n64 games?

Yes, Retroarch devs confirmed it is safe. And I have left mine in max overclock in Retroarch since 2018 and had 0 problems with my Switch.

Does Banjo Kazooie play at full speed on retro arch?

if you use Lakka/switchroot both banjos run fullspeed without overclocks. You need to make a few tweaks for banjo-tooie in the options on lakka but no OC required. Switchroot also supports HD texture pack downloads, so you can basically make the game look better than the xbox live arcade version, and it still will run full speed with minor overclocks.

Is there a guide somewhere I can use to set it up?

Lakka is DEAD easy,
its as simple as downloading the latest build unzipping the file and copying the Bootloader & Lakka folders to the root of your SD card. After running pretty much any release of Hekate payload, click on More Configs and run Lakka. Once you have run it once, it will create all the appropriate folders. Afterwards shut it down.
Then remove your SD card & stick it back into your comp and drop any roms in lakka/storage/roms/downloads folder(even just the roms folder is fine)
For Switchroot/Android I'd suggest following a youtube tutorial(their are many), the main part though is downloading the Image regarding the size of your SD, and flashing it to your SD card using an app like Balena etcher, optional items like Gapps etc can also be downloaded.
If you want a decent tutorial

this is fairly recent & simple to follow and the youtuber generally uploads good content.

@Basketto thanks. So should I just go for Switchroot instead?

In my opinion at the moment at least, Android is the best all round emulation go to for the switch. So I would say yes if emulation is what your after.
The only real downside is you cant overclock as high for wii games, as much as lakka, ubuntu.
A small price to pay though.

Sorry I'm a bit behind on things, is mupen64plus next best or Lakka?

Neither, android switchroot is by a longshot.
Lakka lost support long ago.
Mupen64plus FZ standalone. Runs amazingly, downloads coverart, and has a huge amount of things you can tweak. Esgran Revived has about 100 different texture packs for the various different games I use, all run fine without the need of overclocks that I play. If you want to boost the anti aliasing to 16x along with the most demanding features you still need no more than 1400 overclock battery profile for most games. But none of it is necessary really.
