How difficult is it to repair a broken Wii drive? I see so many ebay listings for a great price, but they always say "broken disc drive". I'm fine with taking them apart, but I don't want to replace the whole drive, as that's kinda expensive.

It is not diffcult to Change. But there are different Drive Types.

So you need the same Drive for your Wii.:)

Buying a console described as faulty is always a gamble. Bad disc drive can mean many things: Lens dirty, Laser worn – or in the case of a slot-in drive like on Wii: garbage pushed inside (I learned that the hard way!).

If the laser is worn or the drive does not even spin up it might be the best to replace the complete drive. I don't know how to replace the laser.

Since optical drives are often the weakest part (that will fail sooner or later anyway) of consoles it is – in my opinion – the best idea to not use them at all. Optical drives are not only error-prone but also slow and loud. Aside from testing and dumping newly acquired games I don't use the Wii disc drives at all.

Good luck and have fun!
