Pre-orders have also gone live in North America, where the VCS 800 is available at either GameStop or Walmart. It'll set you back $389.99, though GameStop is offering it for $10 cheaper. The Atari VCS 800 comes with a standard controller and a retro joystick, while the console features 8GB of DDR4 RAM, of which can be upgraded, along with a Ryzen processor.

There's 32GB of storage on board, with the option to plug in external USB drives to expand it. If you want to buy the system itself, with no extras, you can pre-order it for $279.99, while either controller will retail for $59.99.

As someone who got an Atari 2600 on Christmas morning when I was in 6th grade, and remembers the video game crash and how desperate we were for years for home gaming better than the Atari, Colecovision, and Intellivision junk, until Nintendo finally came along ... well I just gotta say this is some stupid shit, retro fascination carried to an absurd extreme.

with the install other OS option it could make a great emulation machine up to modern consoles

Hahaha , probably they are re-using the same business plan as late ATARI which put them out of business :huh:
Nobody pays for such low spec gear this high price just for a name :!:

I think this has been pointed out before, but... $389.99?!?! What, can it wash the dishes, too? This is about as much as a decent laptop computer! Is this thing a video game console, or a personal computer? Does it come with Windows 10? Oh, maybe it's actually a microcomputer revival! Yeah, that would be -

...Wait a minute. Microcomputers. Suddenly, it starts to make sense. Back in the days when Atari was king, microcomputers threatened to completely destroy the dedicated video game business. The ZX Spectrum, the Commodore 64, the TRS 80, and of course the Atari 2600. Perhaps the Atari name is going back to its roots, bringing back microcomputers in place of PC towers and dedicated gaming systems. Maybe this is why it has such a large price, because it's a brand new wave of microcomputers.

Microcomputers are coming back?!? ALL RIGHT! :hrth: :grog: :toot:
...But let's don't bring back the cassette format, okay? That was a pain in the neck to use. :(

This thing is completely worthless. Why wouldn't you just play these games on your console or PC that you already own? Who is going to make exclusive games for this?

Even if it was $50 it's still a waste of money.

I think the console is a little on the expensive side. I wouldn't mind the price if they had the software to back it up, but I don't think 100 retro games is going to cut it for me... A cool collectors item, nonetheless.

The only positive things I can say about this is that it looks nice as a HTPC case wise and it can run windows.

Although the use of ‘sandbox mode’ just makes me think it’s a VM instead of a ‘native’ boot, which for me takes away even that positive.

So it can play modern games, but it has 32 gb storage?

Apparently it will have an m.2 slot and use USB for expansion. They’re likely including the bare minimum just to keep costs down.

I was thinking about this thing recently since I hadn't heard any news about it in a long time finally some news.
I am quite disappointed I was hoping atari would make a come back and offer some competition. all this is going to be is another steam/android/linux/emu box something more like a mini pc without a keyboard/mouse and an overpriced knock off M$ controller. :(
