Hacking Moving backup game from sd card to external usb hdd

I've run out of space on my SD card, would like to move my backup games to a usb drive and run them from there. What's the best way to do this? I'm thinking...

1. uninstall game
2. delete xci/nsp/nsx files from sd card
3. copy files to usb hdd
4. reinstall game

but this would probably delete any saves or content with the game. Is there a better way to migrate them to the usb hdd and just re-point the current installation to a new place?

I have set this up today if you use xci move them to a external hard drive format to exfat and copy over connect to switch dock and your sorted.
