So, a long, long time ago I had a new 3ds, some games, and a NNID that I used in that console. After some time I sold it - and by all accounts looking back now, I probably didn't fully understand how the NNID worked, and didn't properly unlink it from the system.

Years passed, and now that I bought a new (used) new 3DS (!) I just can't logging using my NNID. Classic 3ds error code:

022-2591: This NNID has already been linked to another system.

So, googling it tells me to contact Nintendo, which I did, explaining my situation. Their response is pretty straightforward:

Thanks for contacting us. I apologize for any inconvenience, but we need to speak with you directly in order to properly address your inquiry. At your earliest opportunity please contact our Consumer Service Department by calling [...]

That would be ok, but the problem is that I'm not american, and neither can speak in english (even if I can write more or less legible sentences, and read just fine).

So, the next logical step is to just make a new account, right? Forget the old one, whatever. I go to my Nintendo account, edit associated account, unlink the NNID - done.

But when I go back, and try to link a new one, it doesn't let me. I click on the option, but it simply brings back the old account. No option to add a fresh account, it just acts like a toggle button between link-unlink.

So... What should I do? There's any sane option to link a new NNID? Or am I just stuck forever with this ghost NNID on my actual Nintendo account?

Thanks for reading :)

Have you hacked the 3ds if so.

  1. Launch GodMode9 by holding (Start) during boot
  2. Press (Home) to bring up the action menu
  3. Select “Scripts…”
  4. Select “GM9Megascript”
  5. Select “Scripts from Plailect’s Guide”
  6. Select “Remove NNID”
  7. Press (A) to continue
  8. Press (A) to unlock SysNAND (lvl1) writing, then input the key combo given
  9. Press (A) to continue
  10. Press (B) to return to the main menu
  11. Select “Exit”
  12. Press (A) to relock write permissions if prompted
  13. Press (Start) to reboot your device

Does this work if the console in question was sold and he is trying to link the info on a different system?

No it removes the nnid that he cant use on his current 3ds and allows him to then create a new NNID

Thanks for the reply, Amanda! Yes, the system is hacked. But I think I expressed myself badly; my problem isn't creating and using a new nnid on the system, but the fact that my Nintendo account seems to be stuck with my old nnid. I wouldn't mind using a new one with the 3ds, but it really bothers me that I have a "ghost" one forever tied to my Nintendo account. I have the old account login and password, but it looks like it's pretty much useless at this point.

Yes Wolf, that's my main problem! Tbh i don't even care if this nnid is simply lost due to this cumbersome system - but it's really... Dumb to have it forever tied to my Nintendo account :/

and that's all? i'll be able to connect my current NNID to new console without a problem now?
Yes it removes the NNid from the console so it can be used on another.

You should also make a new NNID on the 3ds you remove the old NNID from. That way the old 3ds NNID gets unlinked from Nintendo's servers

@Mevsi Probably ain't going to work , since you sold the unit with the NNID linked to it, that 3DS is the console linked to that NNID. Problem here is that if you don't remember the serial number on that unit along with titles you purchased, they ain't doing a remote NNID transfer for you.

Late reply because I was readying myself to deliver the bad news.

That gm9 script function where you delete the NNID from the 3DS does not actually unlink the NNID from that 3DS system. It allows the 3DS firmware to assume you're a new user who wishes to sign up for a new NNID. The Nintendo server still has a record of that NNID tied to that first 3DS. Since you never formally signed off or unlinked the NNID through proper means like this,
, the only way to unlink and relink that NNID to another system would be call Nintendo customer support and have your representative manually do it for you.

If you can't supply the necessary personal information about the 3DS system proving you are who you say you are and still own that 3DS, Nintendo won't unlink the NNID to go through. This is to prevent piracy and stolen identity.
