Hi there,

in the past i used a DStwo on my 3DS to play some DS games. Since the switch came out I thought there could be some flashcard for 3DS games now. I worked through the tutorials and reviews, but most of it seems outdated. So my question here is:

What is the flashcard to go in 2020?

On this page I found a flashcard comparison chart, but I am not sure which card to go with.
I also read about homebrew, but I am not a fan of changing my 3DSs internal firmware.

No ones going to recommend 3ds flashcards. Gateway is useless and abandoned. Stargate is useless and abandoned. Sky3ds is just expensive. You are better off with cfw. and if you dont want that. simply buy your games digitally.

Sky3ds+ will work great if you want it.

But OP didn't ask about CFW.
Offering options is totally valid. But there should be a little more tolerance here on GBAtemp with that topic. If somebody says: "I do not want to modify my device and I'm a 100% sure and will not change my mind." it is of no use to say: "https://3ds.hacks.guide/ Get CFW! Soooo much better! Flashcart is a waste of money." Or even start getting offensive.

@Mathias0178
Please understand that 3DS mode flashcarts have many limitations and are pretty expensive. This is why custom firmware is considered to be the better choice here on the forum. What can be said about 3DS CFW:
  • As safe as and easy as softmodding can be (when following the guide)
  • Completely free
  • Allows installing homebrew, out-of-region games, romhacks, eShop only and retail games – pretty much anything
Sky3DS+ is limited:
  • Only unmodified ROMs from the same region as the console
  • No eShop only games
  • No homebrew¹

The decision is up to you. I very well understand not wanting to modify some consoles (and have some I would never modify myself). Please note, that you won't get much (if any) help here on the forum if you encounter problems with a 3DS mode flashcart (you will be advised to "ditch it" and use https://3ds.hacks.guide/)

Another idea: The Old 2DS, the one in the doorstop design is pretty cheap on the used market (cheaper than Sky3DS+). If you want to try out CFW while not doing anything to your main system this is a good way.

In any case: Good luck and have fun!

¹Technically Sky3DS+ can be used as homebrew entry point when loading Ocarina of Time or Cubic Ninja using the old save exploits. This is not a function of the flashcart but the expected behaviour when it mimics one of the exploitable games.

@kleineSinchen thank you for your proper answer. That was what I was looking for :)
I guess I will try your suggestion. There are some used old 2DS on the market for about 45€. I guess I'll go for it with cfw :)

From what people say pvp isn't even worth it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.

If you can find enough for it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
How much did a 1965 color TV cost?

For example, a 21-inch (diagonal) GE color television in 1965 had an advertised price of $499, which is equal to $4,724 in today's dollars, according to the federal government's inflation calculator.

@K3Nv2, take into consideration how economy was back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah that's why they listed inflation rates
