Square Enix files trademark for 1994 JRPG Live A Live in Australia

There's potential for an old retro game to finally see a release in the west, if a recent trademark is anything to go by. Square Enix has just filed a trademark for their 1994 Super Nintendo JRPG Live A Live, in Australia. The game was directed and written by Takashi Tokita, known for his work on Final Fantasy IV, Parasite Eve, and Chrono Trigger, though it was never localized or released outside of Japan. This makes the trademark application all the more interesting, as it was done in English, hinting at the possibility of an official translation being in the works at Square Enix. It wouldn't be the first time the company has gone back and re-released an old Super Nintendo era RPG and added English text, as they did with Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana, released through the Collection of Mana in 2019. Currently, Live A Live is playable in English thanks to a complete fan-translation patch, courtesy of Aeon Genesis.

I found out about this game just a few years ago, it's originality blew my mind!
I'm not a big JRPG fan but i love this game!

I played and replayed the fan translation several times over the years. It's really interesting, like many different styles of RPG crammed into a single game. Hopefully they will handle this one well, as a lot of people have never been exposed to it.

Ah, Chrono Trigger Zero? At least they wouldn't have to get approval from Akira Toriyama himself to do anything with this one!

I wonder how the official translation - if one does indeed happen; can't be too sure right now, just a trademark filed in English, not a trailer or even a logo (Metroid Prime 4, Elder Scrolls 6) - will compare to the fan translation...also, what platforms? Also not known.

It's rather amusing that a video game about an English speaking country was never released outside of a Japanese speaking country. You'd think they would have tried to at least sell it in Australia to make money.

So is this a thing now? Localizing older games? Just hope is a remake and not a rom patch like trials of mana. I'm not comfortable paying $40 for a compilation of three old games just cause it was put on switch and localized. Remake with better gameplay quality and more content for modern times is worth paying for than a compilation of games with glitchy problems. :ninja:

I can totally see this game getting a remake.
Square Enix could sell the game as a whole or per scenario.

Interesting news. I've started playing the fan translation so many times but never got far with it before getting distracted by something else. It's fairly unique concept just keeps drawing me back though.

The game sounds like jojo before jojo was a thing!
Except Jojo was around almost a decade earlier than this.

Square Enix has filed a trademark in Australia for their 1994 Super Nintendo JRPG Live A Live. The game actually isn’t about Australia..

I would say that Square must really be getting desperate for reliable game ideas if they're willing to plunge that deeply into their back catalog. But then again, Tokita did express interest in bringing the game back once before, long ago. He's certainly correct in that it's the perfect game to release episodically.

Ah, Chrono Trigger Zero?
That's the first time I've heard someone refer to it that way. It's a huge stretch, I think.

I never got the best sword in the ninja/bakumatsu chapter.
Why bother? It's an infuriatingly tedious exercise that you're not likely to get anywhere near completing without following a guide step-by-step. Hardly a stellar example of good game design.

Square Enix, the company that can put a straight face when charging 15-25 American Dollars for old Final Fantasy games on mobile, Square Enix, the company that ported their shit mobile port of Chrono Trigger on pc instead of making a new one or just emulating the old one (which while still scummy, would have ran better)? are you insane? of course they will just patch in the new language, and charge a premium for such a thing

Is this a joke? I've been waiting for Final Fantasy Tactics to get ported to PC for years, and this is the next [potential] port?!
