I have installed the latest stable lakka version on my switch and try to play some games like psx and GC. But all games stutter like crazy. I used max performance cpu over clock and gpu handheld boost. Vulkan driver. And nothing more.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to update the cores? Or are there more settings I need to adjust?

Games I tried:
PSX vigilant 8 2nd offence stuttering like crazy during a race

GC:
Mario kart: stutters during game play and cutscenes
Mario sunshine. Stutters during game play. Not so much as Mario kart but still very annoying. Also the audio crackles a lot. Mostly the talking segments (different audio track than the music?)
Sonic adventure 2: is pretty much unplayable don't think it does more than 10fps

Lakka usually takes time to boot. Be sure to boot from Hekate > More Configs. Don't scare if the Lakka square has no icon, it's a weird but normal bug.

Also, be sure you made a clean install of this version. If you had any file or folder from a previous version, delete them completely before unpacking the files in the root of your SD card. If you are asked to override something then you are doing something wrong.
An advice, turn off the Switch and plug the SD card into your computer to manage the files for this time. Don't use ftp, nxmtp or anything that needs to keep the SD inside the console.

You can look for the cores manually but that will take way too much time if you have several like most of us.

The best way to do it is to download RetroArch, make a copy of all your cores into the RA cores folder, launch the app from the HB Menu and update them from there. Then you can copy them to the Lakka folder again. This is the easiest and more secure way to do it.
Remember that RetroArch doesn't work on applet mode, so you are gonna have to launch a game while pressing R to enter into the HB Menu.

Okay so if I grab the latest retroarch cores, then copy the cores folder over to my sd with lakka, it will update them properly?

Yes. Be sure the cores are in the right folders since Lakka and RetroArch will look for them in different places.

/retroarch/cores fo RetroArch.
/lakka/storage/cores for Lakka.

Also, ICYMI, Lakka doesn't include any kind of updater, RetroArch does tho.

Sorry to say Fayd, and this is the reason I have @WiiEJECT muted, he's trolling you and giving you incorrect information.

You can't update, add or change cores in Lakka.

Lakka's cores are compiled and baked within the package, so you can't modify them.

Unless another user recompiles all of Lakka you wont be able to do anything, it's the reason why you can't download or update cores within Lakka, they have disabled the functionality for this reason.

It doesn't use the typical build-bot cores you download with normal RA distributions so you can't swap them like that.

Please look here for more information:
https://forums.libretro.com/t/manually-add-cores/6099/9

Was there a reason / a certain core you were trying to update?

I don't do more GC emulation, but I'm sure PSX should be running fine.

Can you give more information on the PSX emulator you're using (Lakka has a couple) and please link to the Lakka build you downloaded so I can make sure you're using the most up to date version?

The most probable answer is your SD card speed is slow, I would check that first.

Check my last post, just right above yours where I said Lakka doesn't include any kind of updater :rofl2:

That said, you can modify manually all the cores for Lakka, you just need to go to where the cores are which is /lakka/storage/cores inside the SD card. That's why I say you must first put the cores on the RetroArch folder, update them and then move them to the Lakka folder :teach:

As for the GC question.. Sunshine stutters and runs slow in all 3 options for GC emulation in my experience. Ubuntu + Ishiirka fork of Dolphin seems to run best out of the 3, but none of them are great. It runs fine in the tutorial but once you get to the real game, performance drops.

The only GC game i've gotten reliable full speed is Timesplitters 2 (only in Ubuntu). I've not played Double Dash on it yet.. I'll try next time I boot into linux. I've not tried many other GC games, tbh. I just wanted TimeSplitters and Metal Gear Solid. MGS is bad in all 3.

I tried a few psx games and the performance varied. Some games run ok, others run bad. This is both Lakka and Switch RetroArch. Try to update your cores like WiiEJECT suggests, hopefully that will help. I didn't try.

To summarize, some games just don't run well on switch hardware, regardless of OS. There may be a few setting tweaks to get a couple more frames, but it depends on the game. Be sure to try Overclocking CPU at least.

I think that's the better and most important explanation. Some consoles just won't run well on Switch, doesn't matter the core and if you are using RA or Lakka.
Also, certain games just won't run, even if the core is the best one out there.

Fellas, please. You can't update cores, or manually add new or updated cores in Lakka - please stop recommending that - it will confuse other users. This works in Horizon OS, and Switchroot, but not with Lakka.

Manually placing a core in the "core" folder generated by Lakka doesn't function.

The cores folder is blank if you open it, and if you put a core in it there's no way to install or add it to Lakka because the option is disabled.

Gouchi, the actual developer of Lakka, said this in the link I posted too.

PSX runs 100% fullspeed in Lakka with over 30 games I've test. I've never seen any slowdown. If you're having issues you most likely had a slow speed SD card, or running games at too high a resolution, or have not found the right GPU / CPU clock settings (Don't go over + 3 for GPU).

You shouldn't really use Lakka if you're looking to play GameCube. It doesn't run it very well for the vast majority of games, however it does run better then OPs detailed experience so there is at least something wrong here.

Thing is we all are using the updated, unofficial version of Lakka (not the official one abandoned one year ago) wich, surprise, includes updated cores. And how were the cores updated if Lakka can't update cores? That's right, manually.
Besides, if you are talking about this link, I'm sorry to tell you that you are bringing a topic from 2016, which of course can't be taken into consideration since Lakka has evolved a ton since then.

@HappehLemons I have been wanting to do a full run through the final fantasy games in honor of my late brother, since him and I grew up playing most of them together. I've compiled a list of what versions to play, psp for 1-4, gba for 5 and 6, then switch versions for 7 through 12 (minus 11, MMO game). the psp versions of FF1 and FF4 have bad slowdown whenever I play it in retroarch on atmosphere. These slowdowns are not there when I play on lakka, but I'm missing, sleep mode and updated cores with Lakka. I've been holding out hoping that Lakka will get updated, because wherever I ask about retroarch I get no help for the slowdown issues.

may i strongly suggest ff7 omnislash. Great stuff! especially for a new playthrough.

yeah to my knowledge you can't swap cores from retroarch horizon to switch lakka but i wouldn't be surprised if the cores booted causing this to seem like a good idea.

I have had all sorts of issues with lakka in terms of gamecube and wii. But I have also seen some impressive performance. All in all due to lack of dock I would suggest android for gamecube via dolphin and redream for dreamcast android also plays GREAT sega saturn through yaba sanshiro and linux for wii as both dockable and fairly better performance wise solutions. Ps1 wise android has some great emulators but honestly I like retorarch horizon psx rearmed fine for when it's needed. Plays fairly well.

Okay so noob question, I'm trying to figure out something. Why is it that the HOS version of retroarch and the standalone ppsspp has slowdown issues in FF1 and FF4 but the Lakka version doesn't? Given that the Lakka version is a lot older I would of thought that by now the slowdown would of been fixed in retroarch.

Its unfortunate but unless someone else picks up the project you can't expect Lakka to gain new functions like sleep mode. The original author has stated they do not plan to update it anymore.

With that said - it's possible Lakka will continue to get some of it's cores updated as time goes on - but in order to do that it has to be recompiled which can be a complicated process unless you have knowledge on how to compile software.

Thankfully users here have done that and posted this recompiled builds. There's a build as recent as May using almost all up-to-date cores except for N64 which is just a version out of date.

There's a kind of work around for sleep mode at the very least - the best experience you get with Lakka currently is by using AutoRCM and a payload dongle. That way you just shut down Lakka when you're done, and just insert the payload dongle when you when to boot it up again. This removes the need for Jig and booting into RCM mode, or have to use a computer to inject a payload. You can take it even a step further and make Hekate boot straight to Lakka.

Okay so noob question, I'm trying to figure out something. Why is it that the HOS version of retroarch and the standalone ppsspp has slowdown issues in FF1 and FF4 but the Lakka version doesn't? From what I've been told - HOS has more overhead (More processes running in the background that can't be stopped), and worse drivers connected to it's hardware.

Lakka drivers are more optimized for the hardware + there's not as much overhead so you typically get a much faster experience.

My experience has been similar to yours and I always have to come back to Lakka because it seems to work the best. I hope HOS eventually will get up to speed with Lakka because I prefer to use it.

I'm using Lakka-Switch.L4T.aarch64-2.2-devel-20190728151829 from the lakka site. This was the "latest" stable from a year ago. Is there a new one?

As for psx emulator I'm using the pcsx rearmed one

And as for SD I'm using a SanDisk ultra micro sd. With 100MB read speed. Yes it's a U1 but reading is 100MB. (tested with a copy from SD 85MB per second)
