The Last of Us Part II sells over 4 million in 3 days

"We’re delighted to report that The Last of Us Part II is now the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold through as of June 21. This milestone would not have been reached without the support from our amazing fans, so on behalf of everyone at SIE, thank you!"

By comparison, Spiderman was the previous record holder with 3.3 million in 3 days. The Last of Us 2 obliterated Spiderman and is now the best selling PlayStation exclusive ever.

Neil Druckmann, Vice President of Naughty Dog and Director of The Last of Us Part II, wanted to share this message with you all:

"We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone."

just play it see for yourself better than wasting your time slating it, must be a very boring life you people live, caveman times belong in the past

also, the story was well played from my opinion was fantastic, so everything you don't like in life you go online ranting about it do you, how has this worked for you so far......... get a life FFS
there are many many many games I don't like but never have I once tried to be a keyboard warrior and disrespect the devs behind it.
Let's deconstruct your opinion a little bit:
''so everything you don't like in life you go online ranting about it do you'', there's thousands of game we don't play, did you see us ranting about them? I hate manchild games like Smash bros with passion, do you see me flooding forums about my hate about it?
People usually get mad only for things they care about. Neil Cuckman betrayed the trust we had in him.
''how has this worked for you so far.''
Oh, it worked so well, trust me, this is the first time Naughty dog being called out for their games, they had a perfect score so far.
Those 4 million that simps keep talking about were nothing compared to the sales expectations from Naughty Dogs, Spiderman and God of war don't have the fanbase as The last of US, the game probably should be around the 10 million marks.
What I hate the most are what called reverse scumbag people meaning the people who praise a thing just because they saw others insulting it, emigre is the most obvious guy. They always have their Ace card ready ''In my opinion''.
But the scum of the scum are the guys that use this phrase:
''TLOU 2 is better than TLOU1''
I mean how much you must be a fucktard to say that?
I'm usually a very pragmatic person but when it comes to those types of people, I fucking lose it.

Should we give TLOU2 a 4/10? well yes and no. While I disagree to give TLOU 2 a 4/10 I think it's mainly because of how people cared about the sequel and got disappointed so hard. I don't think that 100k people downvoting a game is something to be cheerful about it
TLOU2 perfected, and I mean perfected everything except one thing: The story.
But the problem with TLOU 2 is its main power is in its narrative. Usually, that kind of thing will get 7.5/10.
I still think first TLOU is the best game ever made story-wise (well there's MGS and Legacy of Kain) and to fail this miserably is really way beyond me.

In conclusion, cuckman had a vision and an opinion regarding certain subjects that not many people agree with him about it.
He wanted to force them on his player base. It failed miserably and showed that he is a coward, why didn't he tell us beforehand about everything: LGBT stuff and major story shift?
He knew that we will not like it so he concealed that info until the leaks. While some hate LGBT stuff ,im personally not interested in those themes, I wanna see what Anita Sarkeesian calls Objectified women, Lara Croft, and the likes.
Do that make me homophobic and misogynistic? to you maybe...
Guess ill go back to days gone, the real sequel to cuckman TLOU1.
What a sad day to be a fan...\
Cheers

The language you use man, shows you deep this alt right mentality you are, geesh.

TLU 1 sold 7 million copies, GoW sold 10 million and Spiderman 13.2 million lol. The remastered only spiked sales for the incoming part II.

We knew Ellie was lesbian since TLU 1, lol, there's an entire episode called Left Behind about that. Freeking Sarkeesian has nothing to do with it, you guys are invoking her just to add a random hate figure to the mix.

Ellie was a gay character on TLU 1 that reached adulthood on TLU 2, and for some reason you are surprised and offended she continued to be gay, lol. Let me guess, you expected conversion "therapy" in a zombie apocalypse?

Edit: we came a long way...:

i played left behind, found it ok, didn't mind lesbian stuff at all there mostly because it wasn't forced like in the second.
Let me be clear, I'm not a fan of Neil, a matter of fact I don't like him as much as the next guy, he had his ups and downs.
For you defending him like that is really weird.I'm dissing him cause he botched what could have been a masterpiece.

Lol at that remastered spike, TLOU1 has always been a seller, thanks to various factors (bundles, price cut, remastered etc).
I mean the game is damn fine, even its multiplayer still stands out.
Let's be honest here please for a minute:
suppose the game was everything we and I quote ''haters'' expected to be, will the leaks harm sales or game notoriety? I'm pretty sure it won't.
Even pewdipie whos really a ''PC'' couldn't defend it.I'm sure if he didn't want to cater to all 105 million subscribers he will anally feed cuckman those double CDs.

man...after all the hate we have for this sequel, there is also a deep sadness that almost gives me tears.
That something I care for so much gets destroyed like this. To some extent, I'm not mad entirely at naughty dog,im mad at myself to care deeply for a game that got butchered this bad.

All i can say is...Bravo Neil.

Now let's theorize about Neil wanting to atone for his fuck up in an impossible third sequel:
pretending this was all a dream? sending Ellie and Tommy to avenge Joel?
no matter how I see it, Neil, you just fucked it up.
wasn't waiting for Tsushima butt gotta say I'm tempted now

And yet it didn't surpass neither of those games.

LOL. The game is a massive sales success, it is literally breaking records. The ideia that is failing commercially is a fantasy of yours. Neither Neil nor Naughty Dog nor Sony will want to atone for anything. Money talks and people sure are voting with their wallets.

Also funny how you prove me right:

Either way, let's say the plot is bad, is that reason to boycott the game? I see tons of games praised here by almost everyone with very crappy plot and characters and nobody is talking about boycotting them. Specially games that are cartoonish of have an anime art style seem to get a free pass in the lack of tri-dimensional characters and a believable plot.

It isn't anime but boy, the japanophile sure will excuse a bi-dimensional character in cliché samurai vibe. But there isn't gay characters in it for sure, so no outcry for boycott.

I don't know where to begin with postal, he's way beyond blind.

''And yet it didn't surpass either of those games.''
It fucking did !!!!!!
TLOU1 is around 20 fucking million, not 7 million. The guy that pointed 7 million was talking about the ps3 version.

''LOL. The game is a massive sales success, it is literally breaking records. The idea that is failing commercially is a fantasy of yours.''

Unfortunately, it's not my fantasy,4 million is good for any other game but not for a AAA sequel that everyone was waiting for.

I'll let you feed me my hat when TLOU2 reaches 20 million.
Why I don't think that it will not reach it is because of the bad reviews this game is getting. not me wishing it to fail.

I'm not crazy to think this game will not do 7 to 8 million sales, I'm saying you're the one with fantasies by thinking it could reach 20 million.

One could argue 4 million is a relative success, I even think naughty dog can call it even by selling only 1 million copies.
But going from 20 million to let's say 7 to 9 million copies is an apparent downgrade (apparently not to some geniuses here)
I'll come back here and lick everybody's boots and bow to everyone defending this game when it reaches 20 million.
And I'm counting the inevitable remaster on the PS5. Until then I bid you farewell.

Persona 5 was politically charged but in a good way. It was more of a call to action about problems rather than telling you what to think or believe like LoU2 did
That doesnt really give it a political agenda though- its just calling out problems in society we need to fix. good point though.
Im talking about games like last of us 2 that try to force their message upon you while having a horribly written narrative
I don't see many games like that in the current industry outside of the aforementioned outliers

And with the PS4 10 million, where are you getting 20 million? And like you said, the remaster sales are only that high due to continuous bundles. To see the success of the game, of course you have to look at the PS3, it was when it was released, and it didn't hit anyway as near as the Part II numbers.

Unfortunately, it's not my fantasy,4 million is good for any other game but not for a AAA sequel that everyone was waiting for.

What are you talking about? It is literally breaking records, again. It's the fastest selling game of all time in the PS4. Not Uncharted, nor Spiderman nor God of War hit that mark at launch. It sold more in 3 days than Final Fantasy VII Remake
altogether.

I'll let you feed me my hat when TLOU2 reaches 20 million.

Done deal, I'll leave a Chrome marker on this page. That's more than any game thus far, bur won't be surprise if it makes it, specially considering it'll be compatible with the PS5.

4 million sold is good to naughty dog,
but 4 million doesn't tell if 100% of people liked or disliked the game the only sure
factor of sale is because of the hype and undeniably false marketing.

FFVII Remake sold 3.5 million copies in the first 3 days, there is no info about the current total but it most likely exceeded 4mil by now.

FFVII can be considered the most popular JRPG, but even so, RPG's aren't a genre for everyone and they are not the most popular among the masses in the west. FIFA 2020, which is an yearly game, managed to sell 10 millions during it's release month.

Sales also dropped by 80% in the second week. many people who didn't like the game are upset how they treated Joel

The Last of Us: Part II’s sales did decrease 80 per cent week-on-week, although this is common for releases with enormous debuts; Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End suffered a similar decline of 78 per cent in its second week. It’s worth stressing that all of this data accounts for physical sales only; we don’t have access to digital sales, but we do know that The Last of Us: Part II is Sony’s fastest-selling game ever globally.

Since you're cherry picking, why didn't you mention 42% from Spiderman?
Also, this game has no competition because no triple A game released in this period

Why are *you* cherry picking? Spiderman isn't a sequel, Last of Us 4 is. If you need the full picture:

To compare the figures, Uncharted 4, another Naughty Dog game, saw a 78% drop in sales during its second week. In contrast, Marvel’s Spider-Man boxed sales dropped by 42% in its second week with God of War seeing a 35% fall in sales. Days Gone, on the other hand, saw a 60% drop.

Interestingly though, people who haven’t played the first The Last of Us game are buying the game rapidly. In boxed sales, The Last of Us: Remastered for the PS4 saw an 82% rise in sales week-on-week.

(source)

If you study economics you can learn how early adopters work on technology: huge boost on the first days, and then the sales slow and increase gradually for other enthusiasts and casual buyers. Video games particularly have a huge set of early adopters, so it will always Spike and then fall. The fall is greater on sequels as most other players won't play a sequel without playing the previous titles. If the game is good, what you'll see is what you see here: a lot of people will buy the first game(s) first to play the sequel later.

So now it's about sequels or not? I used Spiderman because it's also a PS4 exclusive. And yes, there is spike and decline in sales. But 80% flop when no competition is around is a pretty hard decline,in my opinion.

They play a big role. The fans who played the first game and are hyped for the second will want to buy soon. The people who didn't play will be going through the games before, specially if story driven. Their first few days measured fan reception to a certain length, but of course it will be seen better in the long run. For the rest of the people, we'll have to wait and see, but beating records tends do be a fine indicator.

Uncharted 4 is a good comparison because it's a sequel, it's the forth, but with the trilogy remastered, is an honorary second game, had a similar fall and ended up selling 16 million in the long run.

As for God of War, it's more like a soft reboot, many just played it without touching the old games.

Considering God of War (PS4) isn't numbered, I imagine a lot of people - particularly those who weren't around for the PS2 era - probably didn't even know it's supposed to be a sequel, and just thought it was a new series, or a complete reboot, or something.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
