Retroarch is good, and Lakka is as well but, I want to be able to play sm64 rom hacks and those options don't allow that. I'm going to try previous versions of retroarch but in the meantime does a standalone n64 emulator exist?

i play rom hacks on retroarch and lakka. what problem are you having specifically?
well, whenever I boot them, they sometimes have the title screen and then the screen stays black. What settings do you use to get them to work? also, what versions of retroarch and lakka are you on?

the only sm64 rom hacks i've played are mario party 64 and super mario 64 land. i haven't had a pleasant experience on HOS because i can't easily OC the GPU. they both run slow without at least a 'boost mode' GPU OC.

i use lakka because it has GPU OC in the overclock options.

it's just the last release of lakka, the one from last summer. no updates in particular. just make sure video driver is set to 'gl' for anything except dolphin. restart lakka if you change video driver for it to take effect.

have you tested your rom hack files on another device or program so you know it's not the file that's messed up?

yeah, they all work on my computer using project 64, did you patch your hacks? or did you just download straight z64 files?
also what setting do you use for gpu oc?

ok, the patching could be a problem but i just downloaded retroarch on my computer and tested the roms on there with mupen64plus_next (which is in both lakka and retroarch) and they didnt work. But then I also used parallel_n64 (which is in either of the latest releases) and they worked in that. I'm going to download an older version of retroarch and hopefully be able to run the roms using parallel_n64. if that doesn't work, I guess I can just re-patch the roms and try running them again.

Ok, I'm using an older version of Lakka, this one has parallel_n64 and the roms work, now the audio is the issue so I'm going to mess around with lakka.

Some older romhacks rely on emulation hacks/inaccuracies in older emulators and will not work in newer, more accurate emulators (or real hardware).

Yeah, i had a feeling it had to do with something like that... but parallel 64 seems to handle the rom hacks just fine, aside from a few minor graphical glitches.

i HIGHLY recommend using mupen-64plus-next if you can get it to work. i've never had better results with a n64 emulator and i've been around the entire time.

you are correct, sir. black screen after boot screen. i was able to get sound working by disabling framebuffer emulation, but never got to the second screen.
on the plus side, after i updated mupen64plus-next, the rom hacks i was running are almost fullspeed in retroarch.
