Can you check the fzero map flimmering on your SP?
F-Zero: Maximum Velocity? I tried it but wasn't sure what to look for. How to test that?

Here is btw an example of color glitch on top of the display I was able to record

Another from worse case, whole image gets this scanline/interlacing glitch before returning to normal

Basically the funnyplaying video stated, that the map flimmers with the counterfeit while its good on fp screens.

Here is a video from makho on the 1 chip version. He tests frame skipping a little around the end.

Apparently the random issue I have has been a real bug and not a faulty unit. eBay sellers have been starting to market their displays with fix to "top gray problem". Some YouTuber confirmed having the same problem as I do.

The seller I bought my kit, which suffers from this problem, mentioned that they'd have fixed the issue but I wasn't sure at the time if they were being honest. They probably were after all. Had I known, I would have tried to find different solution than partial refund.

I went ahead and ordered another kit from seller which claims to have fixed the problem. I'll reply back when I know if it works as it should.

Only yesterday I got the inspiration to install the advertised fixed IPS kit to fix the "top gray problem". Changing the cable did fix the issue. It seems that the cable is rendering some frames twice. To counter refresh rate difference between GBA and the IPS display?

Both of these brands are very similar now. The “One Chip” version has had several updates since release and they have fixed most of their issues. Also for a while the One Chip kits were using the lower quality Toppoly LCD’s and FunnyPlaying had LG but now both companies are using LG.

Remaining problem I have is that the display doesn't start maybe every 10th attempt. Cold starts might be worst. I can hear the sound so console is working but display stays black. Retry helps.

This issue didn't happen with old cable. It doesn't matter if use the display from old or new kit. Frame centering is maybe tiny bit better in the old one so I sticked with it.

i've ordered funnyplaying and chinese clone.
First i ordered the original from funnyplaying.
but i had major issues with afterglow-effects

Flickering objects like the (A)-Coin in Super Mario Advance 1 (already taken coins) are shown every even frame, and not on every odd frame.
after few Frames the display itself seems to merge those two frames, so no flickering is visible.
but as the thing moves through the display the flickering is visible few seonds where the coin was on the screen before, like a ghost coin.

i send videos to funnyplaying and hoping for a answer.

in the meanwhile I ordered a clone with a singlechip ribbon cable. The display itself is the same Display from LG used in BlackBerry Curve 9380. So i swapped the cables.

the chinese cable does not have the aftergloweffect on the FP display, but the FP cable does produce the afterglow effect on the chinese display as well, but not that strong, only barely visible.

any idea how to avoid the Frameskipping thing or remove the afterglow effect?

Edit: Frameskipping on mine is not frameskipping. It is doubling one single frame.
I wrote a small gba rom for testing frameskipping. And found out with a slowmo-cam that there are several frames within a second are displayed multiple times.
so the display seems not to be in sync with the gba display.

Every 14 frames a frame is displayed twice,
Sometimes it is 13 frames.

on my full slow motion i get about 4.3 frames per second to much.
Which fits to the roughly 59.7 frames per second from the gba, that indicates that the display is running at 64.1 Hz, but why not in sync with gba?

Edit2: i have made a slowmo video and wrote down the framenumbers.
Assuming that the GBA does 59.73Hz, then the Display shows about 64.1Hz, measured about 11.2s

edit, i've uploaded videos:
