There's a few videogames that had some DSi enhancement and were region-locked, I thought. (minor thing)

@crashboii4 flashcarts that arent crap or have a timebomb can be pricey. however it can get it done without putting custom firmware on your 3ds if you are hacking adverse. since i assume you mean roms (otherwise the 3ds natively plays DS names) CFW+TwilightMenu++ has come a long way. 100% compatibility with DS titles (it just uses the 3ds' native ability to play ds games) and DSi titles are starting to be worked on. DSi is allegedly tricky.

(just my 2 cents. Personally I am used to Luma CFW and I homebrew freely. I don't like the idea of paying for a flash cart but I understand those who might not like occasionally complicated nature of homebrew)

@hug0-a7x makes a good point about DSi Enhanced which I didn't know personally as I am a LumaCFW person. DSi enhanced hopefully is not your goal.

Example DSi enhanced title Pokemon Black & White 2. Runs on both.

There are 4-5 DSi only cartridge games ever.

DSiWare is another thing entirely. The mind boggles. I know.

Edit 6/11: ALSO a word of warning. A majoooority of DS cartridges if you end up just buying some carts are region free. Some are not. Example: pokemon series is region locked. Emulators help with this headache because a lot of people are buying Japanese 2ds/3ds units because the limited editions are beautiful as hell. But you can't just shove a US copy of Pokemon Black 2 into a japanese 2ds without issues. Or even a japanese DSi. (LumaCFW+TwilightMenu++ looks at DS region lock and laughs at it)

Region lock is a thing is all I am trying to say. Ninty was only semi-region free in the ds/3ds era.

@Shadow#1 DS was not 100% region free. Cartridges were region locked per series. @AyanamiRei is 100% correct.
Pokemon Black and White 1/2 were region locked and even if you weren't running enhanced. You cannot even play them on 3ds/2ds on the wrong region firmware. Several big name titles were like this.

(I am talking about the actual cartridges being shoved in a 3ds with no hack or homebrew or anything.)

You are correct but they are massively popular titles and not the only DSi cartridges released before the 3ds game out. So it is worth noting to anyone who is looking to play DS/DSi games on 3ds/2ds that there are some nitpicky issues and it isn't just on unpopular games.

If you consider DSi and DS to be different then sure. I considered DSi to be an upgrade like the DS Lite. Or new3ds to 3ds.

OG DS with OG DS carts are region free. That is 100% correct. But it doesn't paint the whole picture is all I was trying to convey a little clearly for the original poster.

Hi, not sure but like a year ago I did CFW on my N3DS XL, I read back the guide but it seems it's not the same, if I call recall correctly, I purchase a game to do the hack (not sure either) sorry I'm gettin' old been here since 2006 so please bear with me. Anyway here's the thing:

So I've a N3DSXL working perfectly fine on CFW with SD. Games are via FBI .cias, I'm reading thru here that flash carts have 100% playability for DS game. I still have a working DS Lite and a few R4s(plural).

- I don't want to have to switch over N3DS and DSLite just to play games.
- I don't have spare sd card for the R4s that I have

I missed playing Hotel Dusk 215 and missed trying America's Test Kitchen.

Your best bet for regular DS games is to play them on "twilight menu" (not really an emulator, it enables DS games to be played natively) Don't worry about flashcarts.

Thanks! I just bought my 3 kids DSi LL(2) and a DSi XL so I just had them Twilighted... I'll do a quick look at how to install TM++ on my N3DSXL, I hope there's a .cia for that so I could just FTP it to my N3DSXL.

Many Thanks!

Just use Universal Updater to install it proper on a 3DS system

Yeah it works great but it's the obvious Ds factor you loose from it it's not like playing atari games on atari because Nintendo actually use to give a reason to buy their hardware

Can't be that far off from it not like ds requires super hardware
  • HiradeGirl @ HiradeGirl:
@K3Nv2 I did that using Citra for 3DS games. Bottom screen was my smartphone. Until I got the touch screen.

    Use a TV
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    Citra allows it already?

Any TV with your PC connected with Citra and any smartphone to use as a screen using a free play store app.
