Summer Games Done Quick's charity event will take place digitally this year

aGmeoDp.png

When COVID-19 caused the delay of just about every physical gathering related to gaming, the annual Summer Games Done Quick was delayed indefinitely. Later, the staff behind the charity-based speedrunning event announced that they had rescheduled Summer Games Done Quick to August, but given pandemic prevention measures, it was still unlikely that the show would still go on as usual. Which is why this GDQ will now take place entirely online, in the form of Summer Games Done Quick 2020 Online. The event will be streamed from speedrunner's homes, while the rest of the show will be hosted from the GDQ studio. You'll be able to tune in and watch the charity speedruns through the official Twitch channel, which will broadcast from August 16-23.

Hooray! the only let's plays I'll watch are speedruns. As long as the audio quality is good, that's the important bit. It's hard listening to commentary when the audio is recorded on a potato.

While not all streamers have watchable personalities, you can always mute them and just watch if you don't like listerning to the breakdown of what's happening. For me though, that's the interesting bit. I know zelda speedruns fairly well, and some of metroid, but that's about it. Always fun to see other games.

I've tried tuning into their digital only events in the past, and it's just not worth it.
The intermissions lack the atmosphere of their lobby, but more importantly the stream quality can often be terrible and some streams can be outright unwatchable, because it's run via individual runner's home set ups.

This is probably going to hit the event hard, I can see them raising a fraction of what they'd normally achieve.

No thanks, I'm not interested any more supporting or financing any Western Christian/catholic sect, no thanks. Seriously had enough of this legal money laundering, stealing. Literally every sickness, disease, day of the year, dick and marry have a charity/fund raiser to fill up their coffers and spread the happiness within their magical circle of the chosen ones.

GDQ events have always been very hit-or-miss for me. Admittedly the sheer amount of drama I've heard goes on behind-the-scenes has turned me off from the event as well.

Although I will say that last year at SGDQ they did a Blind Kaizo Mario World relay race that I enjoyed immensely. Practically the only event that I thought was really well put together by them.

Hope this gets hacked to hell. Nintendo server hackers, do your magic here!
At least it would break the monotony, boredom and robotic talk of the event :^}
It would cheer things up a bit.

Sadly I agree :( The atmosphere is different.

GBAtemp children in a nutshell tbh. Most people here are too stupid to realize this is the largest gaming charity event and with that comes a cost of needing to be regulated.

And despite the crying of some of the shittier runners and kiddies who have no idea what they're even on about, the event only keeps growing in popularity and donations.

But anyway it's too bad it'll be digital this year. Makes sense but the audience and couch are some of the best parts of runs in most cases.

The event wen t to shit when they started gatekeeping chat with a 5 dollar subscription, but trihex's "poverty chat" makes it really fun and pretty enjoyable.

Probably the only time I watch a stream hosted.

Can't wait.

I feel like this is going to really lose some of what breaks up and diversifies each stream. I suppose it has to be done.
