Dan Houser left Rock* so I wonder how good it will be.

Grand Theft Auto VI is presumed to be the next title in development at Rockstar Games, and now an SEC filing by publisher Take-Two Interactive might indicate that it won't be ready until 2023.

A 10-K filing by Take-Two, which includes presumed marketing spend for the next five years, shows that the company is planning to spend over $89 million in its 2023 financial year. This period starts on April 1 2023 and ends on March 31 2024, with double the marketing budget than any other year during this five-year stretch by. According to analyst Jeff Cohen of investment firm Stephens (and reported by VentureBeat), the budget is likely for Grand Theft Auto VI.

On the one hand that is something.

On the other I would have thought 89 million is as nothing for a GTA sequel advertising. Then again I don't know what marketing budgets are likely to be and am more comparing it to other media (though ones with similar sales numbers, if not less -- plenty of big films and TV shows that make top ? of each year would love them some GTA 5 numbers).

still waiting for bully2

They're all about money they got Grand Theft Auto, RDR each take about 5 years so you rotate the two, and different developers same publisher Borderlands, NBA 2K, Bioshock etc... it's very unlikely they're going to make anymore games like Bully or Manhunt those franchises are likely dead. The sales were not through the roof like those other games so they get ignored.

Damn, have we gotten to the point of one GTA game per decade?! On the one hand, I get it, these games are extremely detailed and very well programmed, and frankly just a shit ton of fun. There is a reason the game continues to be in the top 10 selling games to this day, 7 years into the title's life. The wait tends to be worth it with Rockstar these days. All the same though, I miss the days of getting 3 entries with the GTA 3 engine (5 if you count the 2 'Stories' entries) within 3 years (5 entries in 5 years when we count the 2 'Stories' games), and that's while also releasing lots of other not long later (Max Payne, Bully, Manhunt, Midnight Club, etc. etc.). But I get it, the amount of time and effort to put into PS2-era games is definitely going to pale in comparison to what goes into a game today if you want to make as detailed and feature heavy of a title as Rockstar seems to aim to.

But shit, it seems at this point Rockstar is becoming a 2 trick pony because of how they approach games in these modern times: GTA and Red Dead. It sucks, but they make the money, and they likely don't feel like risking their current work ethics of many years of production into one of their lesser tiered franchises. I'd love a modern take on Bully or Manhunt, but that just doesn't seem to be in the cards. Maybe in the next decade we might be so lucky.

I don't know that I would put it at the feet of development time as much as GTA online making all the money so don't kill off your golden goose while it is still laying eggs.

Thats exactly why they are in no rush to make GTA VI. Throughout 2019 alone, GTA V pulled in $595 million in digital revenues, analyst firm SuperData reports in its latest 2019 Year in Review sales brief. These numbers are driven strongly by GTA Online's microtransactions and cemented GTA V in third out of the top 10 best-earning games of 2019, just below Activision's Modern Warfare reboot and EA's FIFA 19. The staying power of GTA V is just absolutely incredible.

If they were money grabbing bastards they would realese a GTA every year knowing fine well the money would come pouring in thats exactly what EA do with Fifa and Madden ect. Its actually good business practice not to kill off a product with a new one when the old product is still making more money the 99% of other games currently on the market.

But thts what I mean by money grabbing they could be just sitting on ther arse allday drinking cocktails on the beach and not bothered of making new one lol as what you said gta 5 stil sell plus online stuff and thts totally wrong if the case - and re EA releasing sports games every year is a good thing as its needed with teams being updated plus to me thers always improvements to ther sport games and I don't mind spending 40 50 quid a year on a game wher I spend loads of time with
