I have an R4 that a friend gave to me years ago. Iirc, I reformatted the microSD card, and now I can't find the right firmware for it. Here are pics of the shell and the pcb:

Any idea what FW I should use? I've tried the most recent one at r4ds.com, but I just get the black loading screen of death.

What microSD card are you using? As that seems to be a clone of the original R4, microSDHD/XC cards may not end up working.

Aha! I am using an XC memory card. So, that makes a difference?
Some carts, especially way older ones, can only read microSD cards. Yours may be able to read microSDHC ones as I recall that some original R4 clones have been modified to be able to read them. I'm not sure if there exists an NDS flashcart that can read microSDXC cards. Try finding another microSD card and use the Wood R4 firmware.

They do exist because I bought one as I tried to point out in my post. But it was a clone and a fairly recent clone at that.

Okay, I think I found another issue: all of my microSD cards are over 32 gigs. I need something smaller, or else I won't be able to format it to a fat32. Guess I'm shopping for a small microSD card. I'll report any updates here. Thanks!

EDIT: Correction! I found one that's 32 GB! However, when I tried Wood with it, I got the same results. Any ideas?

People have been formatting larger SD cards as FAT32 for ages now. You can't do it with built-in Windows utilities, but tools like Minitool Partition Wizard will work. Even without that, I think you can just create a smaller partition that doesn't take up the entire capacity of the card.

If you R4 doesn't support SDHC, then the max size is 2 GB.

Is there any way to determine—without testing each individual firmware—whether or not the R4 I have is a clone or not and, if it is, to determine which clone it is? Like does a clone always say on the front if it's a R4i or something like that? Or are there some that are clones that still have the regular R4 label on them?

Here's what the root looks like with just the regular R4 files on it (obtained from here):

Also, I tried reformatting my 32 GB down to 2 GB using the instructions here. Didn't seem to work as I'd hoped.

Here's a picture of the microSD card I'm using:
