There are a ton of free to play MMOs around if you like that. For me, MMOs all feel a bit samey, but there are a couple that are special to me, one being Lord of the Rings Online, which happens to be F2P. But if you want to unlock all of the expansion content and quests, you'll have to do some serious grinding for Lotro Points ingame (which are normally purchased with money but you always get a bit just through normal gameplay without focusing on it), it is possible though, and people have posted methods on how to grind them efficiently.

Cave Story if you somehow haven't played it yet, the OG is free. Cave Story Plus is definitely the better version, though.

Some great gems I can recommend are:

  • Cave Story (the original 2004 version, you can find it in https://www.cavestory.org)
  • Super Crate Box, a fast paced arcade based game made by Vlambeer
  • Yume Nikki
  • Spelunky (the 2008 version, still free and just as fun)
  • Literally HALO (Custom Edition, needs a small workaround since GameSpy servers are gone)
  • N (flash game, pretty fun, but hard)
  • TF2
  • Red Hot Vengeance (free on Steam)
...and that's all I have for now! Have fun playing these ;)

To be honest: I'd subscribe to the free games thread. The humble store and (especially) epic give away very decent games on a regular basis. You only need to click a bit and have a launcher and account ready to be good to go. Once claimed, it remains yours (or more specifically: the account's) forever.
Epic had GTA5 just last week, and are now giving out civilisation 6, so...certainly no bad stuff. :)

As for genuinely free games...most modern ones have been mentioned, so I'll dive into some older abandonware:
-Lost vikings (early blizzard platforming game about controlling 3 characters)
-the incredible machine series (complete the contraptions)
-transport tycoon deluxe (and/or openTTD)

...and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to the site, but it seems like Simpsons hit & run, black & white and even rayman origins are now abandonware, and thus (legally?) free to download and play.

I know a guy who will email you a copy of Untitled Goose Game if you ask. I don't mean he sends you a download link, he attaches a .zip file containing the game within the email. Definitely not official, and probably not legal, but hey, what can you do.

Might as well include a bunch of paid for games too.
