Recently the source code for the xbox, xbox 360, xbox one, not even just the source code like the operating systems and everything.
the original xbox stuff got leaked a few days ago but the other cosoles were leaked today!
The possibilities are endless like emulation for PC.
The question is though does that mean will we get softmods for the xbox 360 now?

I can't post links and stuff so I can't send the links and also I recently got my 360 modded so this don't matter much for me but I'm still interested.

Having not so much as seen a breakdown of any releases it will depend what is there.

If it is Microsoft's private keys for retail boxes then yeah that would be softmod. I doubt they will have been included, or be able to be derived from all this, though.

If it is Microsoft's source code for the various kernels and underlying OS then they do have some pretty serious countermeasures to prevent softmods (everything from randomness detection to encrypted memory) but there is a possibility that having source code will allow easier analysis of various things, or possibly a means to swap into some debug mode. That said most of the modules responsible for the security are pretty small and that leaves little scope for exploits.

If it is Microsoft's source code that developers use to make games then such things stopped being of any great use to hackers doing console level exploits around maybe the PS1 era, possibly even having the 16 bit era as the last hurrah. More useful to ROM hackers and people fleshing out the homebrew SDKs, even then not that useful.

Where exactly did you see anything leaked regarding 360 and One? All I see is the source for the OG Xbox.

I saw that as well in a video linked in another thread, though it did not go into details and the video maker did not seem up to much else they would have checked that. If it is a nice torrent of separate files I guess there might be scope to have a peek but eh.

That said while the existence of these leaks at all speaks to a lack of security somewhere along the line I would be stunned if it contained the private keys for the retail 360 dashboard/kernel or userland games/code. That is the sort of thing you keep locked up very tightly and have all your devs send you files to sign, and check (and check before they sign in case it is an all 00 file and that gives the key away as all 00 files do bad things to keys in many crypto formats -- see 3ds XOR keys for a more basic one there).
If said devs need keys for what they do you have a separate set for development boxes, high end reviewers (IGN and what have you that get stuff months ahead of time) and developer kits. That way if the dev stuff leaks then not ideal but realistically no big deal as dev boxes are only really in the hands of developers.

This cache of info then more likely to come from some kind of government or big company source code vetting (Microsoft lend out the source code for Windows, Office, Visual Studio and the like to very big companies and governments all the time before big contracts), outside security testing, lawsuit discovery maybe, maybe a backup vault somewhere, possibly an employee with an information hoarding problem (engineers are often like that -- just in case/might be useful/saves downloading it again/... , and frankly it has saved the day on more occasions than people would like to admit)... most of which would not need nor benefit from having private retail keys.

If anything is in there it is more likely to be the public stuff we have stuck into the likes of le fluffie and whatever else we use to poke about in isos, XBLA, DLC, saves, hard drive images, and the like for years and years now, or maybe space for some user keys for things like saves and profiles for use in tests.

Thats a good point could just be for dev boxes or other things, thanks for giving me some realistic speculation on the matter, your probably right though haha

My understanding with regards all the recent leaks is that they've been circulating in private for quite some time - if that's the case then it would seem likely that 'progress' would have already been made in the various areas of homebrew/modding/emulation.

Here's the MVG video where he addresses the same queries but with regards the OG xbox leaks...

The title of the video:
UPDATE: 400+ GIGABYTES OF MICROSOFT'S XBOX CONTENT HAS BEEN UPLOADED

I wont link because people in the comments may link to it.

Different leak that was leaked like 2 weeks ago the one I'm talking about was leaked fairly recently. Don't know why MVG is not addressing it though...

I know. I was only pointing it out because his comments on the OG xbox leak would totally apply to any other leaks; old leaks, circulated in private for ages, nothing has come of them so far - why should that change now they're public?

Ahhh no it has Xbox One leaks as well and was a 400+ GB folder, I doubt that I was circulating among the public secretly.

I doubt it , at least for anything updated past the build of the leaks, thats if anything happens, its possibly someone could sign a "legit" build and update to that with the modifications for homebrew, maybe. but given MS still support the 360 with live services, i can see anyone distributing any sort of code to make custom OS builds with a law suit or something

Yeah, could still be over 6 years old. There's very little labelled as xbox one that couldn't have come from a devkit... and tbh, as much as I'd like this to be real it wreaks of bullshit... random selection of folders (mainly games), couple of pdf's - it's hardly compelling proof, especially as no one else seems to be reporting on it.

Unless the 360 private signing key is leaked this will not allow for a softmod, the 360 was built specifically to prevent softmodding, that's why only the two publicly available exploits jtag/rgh are physical mods to the hardware which then allows you to run homebrew, the Xbox 360 is built like fort Knox from a software pov, but the hardware design had flaws that could be used to run unsigned code

If we are talking the 360 security then forgot to link this last time

The bit where it says there is not much of interest in is wrong (see earlier discussions of JTAG/SMC and later RGH stuff as the talk was noted/referenced in those) but it does serve as a nice overview, and showcases why a softmod outside of key recovery or sabotage is probably not on the cards.
