[UPDATE] Ubisoft sues Apple and Google over alleged 'Rainbow Six: Siege' ripoff

r6s.jpg

French gaming company Ubisoft filed a lawsuit last Friday against Google and Apple for selling Area F2, which it claims to be a clone of its hit title Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege. The news come from a Bloomberg report, which quotes Ubisoft as saying that “virtually every aspect of AF2 is copied from R6S, from the operator selection screen to the final scoring screen, and everything in between.” You can spot the similarities by yourself in the gameplay video below from the official Area F2 YouTube channel:

Area F2 was developed by Ejoy.com, which e-commerce giant Alibaba acquired in 2017. However, Ubisoft is suing Google and Apple for hosting the game on their storefronts as filing a copyright infringement claim against Ejoy.com could be more challenging as the company is located in China. Pulling it from Google Play and the Apple Store would thus deprive Area F2’s developer from significant revenue but the game could still be side-loaded.

UPDATE:

Speaking to Kotaku, Ubisoft has confirmed that it is dropping the lawsuit against Apple and Google following Ejoy's termination of Area F2.

Ok, I know people are saying aren't all shooters are a rip off of each other but this is a whole nother level of similar. as in this is just a straight up clone of all the mechanics....no question about it

or tf2, or rainbow six, or csgo, or far cry, or literally any of the dozens of actually completely different kinds of shooter genres

smh, not all shooters are call of duty clones
Half Life 2
Bioshock
DOOM
Portal
Noah's Ark 3D
Half Life: Alyx

Just to list a few more examples for your list of unique shooters.

Google and Apple didn't make this. Suing store owners because they sell a product you don't like (even if for valid reasons) is a bad precedent to set.
you either sue the store owners on behalf of the company infringing copyright, or try to gamble your luck on suing someone directly that's based in china, one's more likely to succeed than the other. i'll give a hint, it's not from suing directly from china

if you want you can had metroid prime and so on.

the thing is its not infrinding because of the tactical shooting but they copied preety much the enterely of the UI + gameplay, i mean if they have diferent menu layouts and such it wouldnt be so obvious imo.

Did you read the article? They are sueing in order to take down the game and not host it. So that the actual developers don't profit from it.

It's not the first time it's happened. GAppS has taken down apps previously for copyright infringement claims.

This is how most game devs started I still remembered gameloft ripping-off most of the shooter games and other games out there. And now, they're huge. Anyway, I just think this is just a sore loser move by ubisoft's legal team. Unless the game uses their assets or codes, then they have no legal basis. This is just like Riot games suing most moba games or whatever. Or company A suing a certain genre of game, which is beyond stupid. What Ubisoft should do is make their own mobile game of Rainbow Six Siege rather be a loser about it.

you haven't actually looked at comparisons have you, they're not suing because it's the same genre, they're suing because it's basically a straight up clone, from the gameplay to the ui and menus, that's like saying nintendo can't do DMCA takedowns on mario fangames

I've not heard from anyone here so far if Area F2 is using unlicensed proprietary code and/or assets from Ubisoft, as that is the real grounds for which that game can be targeted with.
Many free/open-source games (but not all of them) happen to be clones of other games, although they clone more of their basic gameplay and less of their aesthetics. Are there any such FOSS games that are straight up clones of other games that can also be targeted like in this situation?

Isn't every game a rip-off of this? Like, a lot of games have guns. COD has guns. Batman has guns. Zombi for Wii U has guns. Sonic Adventure has guns. Some games even have jumping. You can jump in Mario. You can jump in GTA. You can jump in Shrek SuperSlam. Other games are ripping it off by using the Internet, like, like, porn games on Newgrounds, or, or, there is even the internet in Sonic in a Car 3! Hell, this game even has graphics! I can list off 5 (or so) other games with graphics!
So you're comparing this to the fact that every game has guns or something? I don't know, make the effort to look at the trailer at least... It's literally like there's a game called "Mega Roberto" where you jump on snails, dressed in red with a moustache but he's Spanish. If you were introduced to that, you wouldn't make the same remark at all.
I still think Ubisoft is wasting its time. Like, there's already been some Overwatch plagiarism on mobile phones, and it's going to keep coming out everywhere (even though that plagiarism is much less obvious than this one I find, really in Area F2 it's impressive how MANY aspects of R6S are simply copied and pasted) but still, I have a hard time understanding the premise of that remark. Is it ok to copy a game's ideas and sell it on the phone "because all games have graphics"?
Because we're talking about selling, we're not just talking about a guy who makes a flash game or a fangame, we're talking about a company that sells a game on the phone, it's not the same thing, and that just makes your remark more inappropriate, I think.

It's not about being a "clone", it's about "copy paste" and pure imitation. Also, open source clones doesn't sell your ideas to another public, but Area F2 does. I mean, you know why Paladins is not being sued by Blizzard ? Because their game is different despite being the same genre, yes sometimes they take ideas but it's still their own work and it shows, but Area F2 is pure plagiarism. I've tried it myself when I saw it on the store and I loled so hard when I saw the characters, they just changed some nationalities of the characters, but also gave the exact same weapons and gadgets to some in order to mix things up a little bit, they took the UI and stuff and boom, there you go. It's just plagiarism. They didn't even tried to adapt it to mobile controls, it's just the same game. You could give it to somebody who played R6S once but doesn't play a lot generally and he would say "oh but I already played it on PC".

I mean, on this website we can see a whole bunch of people explaining how it's normal for Nintendo to send a bunch of DMCA on fangames, but can't understand how this one is problematic ????? Come on ... Someguy even said that "all the shooters looks the same" smh no words come to mind. How ignorant do you have to be to say things like that? "Oh all rpg's are the same, it's always one boring trick at a time" "Oh all platformers are the same, just jump on enemies and walk straight". I'm not a fan of management games or strategy games for example, maybe from my point of view they look a little bit alike, but I don't know if they're really all the same since I don't know anything about them, but then I don't say it for 3 reasons: 1. I don't know anything about them, maybe they don't look alike at all. 2. It would be very contemptuous. 3. I'd look like an idiot.

in the super-corporate, ultra-capitalist hellhole we all live in, imitation is no longer the sincerest form of flattery but is an opportunity to destroy the livelihoods of the people who admire your work
Sometimes i think communism is the solution....
still tho, the government needs to start taking control of larger corporations so that we won't be in this
at this point, corporations have more power than the government- hell nintendo made cheating in games illegal in japan. OVER VIDEO GAMES.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Well, I guess you insulted 55 million players in one sentence. Good score.

I dunno, it kinda sounds like "all the playerbase has shit taste", and also a bad generalisation.

the government needs to start taking control of larger corporations.
this will vary from country to country but I would suggest that on the whole there is far too much overlap between business and politics to the point that in most western countries politics and business are not reasonably separable. Corporations lobby governments all the time and in return they are permitted to exploit people, other animals and the environment, engage in illegal and immoral practices, and pay no tax. meanwhile the needs of the taxpaying population are not met because the conflict of interest introduced into politics by corporate politicians accepting these lobbying payments means that acting in the interests of the population (such as by curbing pollution) would enrage the lobbyists and jeopardise the personal wealth of the politicians. This practice is clearly inappropriate and lobbying is literally killing everything, but most people don't care because they think that this is all ok as long as it doesn't affect them personally
