Version 5 released.

It introduced multiple times requested change regarding Goomba to default to GBC/GB instead of SGB. Also automatic colorization of original GB games has been removed. GBC games are naturally colorized. This allows playing GB/GBC games like they originally were without SGB borders and having original colors.

If you prefer the old way, you can keep on using version 4. Feedback welcome.

Changelog
  • Goomba changes (issue link) (patch link)
    • No SGB borders by default
      • New "Prefer GBC over GB" default mode instead of "Prefer GBC over SGB"
    • Original GB games use black and white "Grayscale" palette instead of colorized "Wario Blast"
  • Start emulated games directly without single-item game menu (link)

I really like this kernel and I made a new theme for it which fits the look of my GBA SP with IPS screen. I can share the files if anyone is interested.

That's very neat. Please share! With bit more "generic" colors that could be even mainline stuff.

@veikkos Thanks. I'll added the compiled kernel (light, dark, with serif or with sans serif fonts) and the theme resources in the attachment. I like this color scheme since it suits my GBA SP but I'm willing to make a more generic version if you want to include it in your kernel. What do you think about a blue header and yellow folders, and do you like the dark or light theme more?

Blue does look nice. Haven't yet tested these on device but I'll try soon. I like dark the best.

I was thinking of red theme, dark background. Worth a try?

Edit: I liked Sans Serif, it's nice and modern. It could be either Blue+Yellow or Red+Yellow - but feel free to try what looks best and we can then see.

Also it would be nice to have matching "console" icons, so recoloring now purple GBA also Blue/Red.

This is what red would look like. Personally in favor of the blue one.

I like that one also. Could you share Blue and Red binaries and I'll try? :)
Here you go :D

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

@veikkos I think it would also be nice to have seperate icons for gb and gbc. But that's something you would need to add to the kernel.

Thank you! Both of these are really cool - way way better than the original in my opinion. I still like red a bit more, it fits Nintendo so well. :)

Separating icon for GB and GBC ain't a problem code-wise, but it would affect Universal Skinner users which would be a bummer.

One thing. Not sure if you have done skinning for source code. But maybe @Sterophonick knows - is there easier way of applying BPM/PNG files from theme to source code (header files) than using bin2c.exe individually for every file? It calls for scripting or something at least.

Glad you like both of them. The red one still needs to grow on me, but you are right that it fits nintendo very well. :DSorry I haven't done skinning for source code before so I don't know.

You can try using https://www.coranac.com/projects/grit this tool called grit that can be used in the command line, along with a batch or sh script.

Ah, yes, grit ofc. Familiar tool.

Just in case someone ever wonders the same, these settings (from the Windows GUI) gave .c file which needed to be renamed to .h and variable name changed how it was (e.g. just gImage_NOR). Then it works with Omega.

Edit: From command line it is e.g. grit.exe images/bmp/nor.bmp -gB16 -gu8 -gb -ftc

@Nona_Elexis could you please lemme know where are all the assets from in the Red/Blue themes that you did? Have you created all the icons, backgrounds etc by yourself or are they used in some other skin? And where is the font from? I think it's important that the credit goes where credit's due

I've now mostly integrated the red skin to source code so that one can build the kernel with either original or red theme. Font is giving me some headache as grit doesn't support 8x12 tiles and I've had hard time finding a suitable tool. Might need to write it by myself.

@veikkos All the icons, assets and backgrounds are original and drawn from scratch by me. Only the 'nor' and 'gb' icon i edited from the official EZ flash theme. For the "image not found" image I obviously took my inspiration from the "Super Mario" flower.

The font I got from a theme called "clean" which was linked by @stap in the ez flash omega skins thread. I don't know if he is the creator or not..

Nice to hear that you got it integrated in the source code! Hopefully you find a way to add the font too.
