Been searching about the displays the DSi had but keep getting mixed info from different sources. Some say they're IPS, others swear they're TN. I know for sure that the DSiXL had IPS panels but I want to find out about the regular DSi. Does anyone have a reputable source for what type of display it has? Is there any way to find out using homebrew, kinda like 3DSident?

I believe they come in both. Mine has TN and is the non-XL variant. Still looks sharper than my TN N3DS. Not sure if there was a way to find out.

Nope, got a Red DSi, 100% TN, just tilting the screen is shifting the colors, the DSi XL is 100% IPS IIRC.

I just got a new black DSi and screens are very vibrant compared to my TN black N3DS. Safe to say the DSi's are IPS or at least mine is. I used the same DS game on both to compare, night and day difference. N3DS looked washed out.

Actually the DSi has TFT screens, those distort the colors when viewed from wide angles. 3DS has TN screens, those have a wider view angle but "wash out" the colors, loosing vibrance. In the other hand, IPS are the ultimate solution as those can be viewed from any angle without loosing fidelity in colors, and only the DSi XL and some MEW 3DS/XL models have that.

Can we get some sources? I've read that N3DS and DSi are a mixed bag of TN and IPS.

It has been confirmed by Nintendo themselves for the DSi model that it will always have IPS pannels, as they advertised the console as "having a great viewing angle compared to previous models".

DSi XL (2009)
:
The DSi XL has much larger screens than the DS, DS Lite and DSi. It also has 5 brightness settings like the DSi. Not only is the DSi XL the first Nintendo system to use IPS screens, they are 100% guaranteed and have great quality control. The DSi XL also has better speakers and a much longer battery life than previous models. This is the largest display you can play DS games on at 1:1. Playing DS games on a[New] 2/3DS XL at full size is horribly blurry and pixelated. 1:1 mode isn't sharp and clean, but not as big as the DSi XL and doesn't fill the entire screen.

Normal sized DSi's will always be TFT panels, I have 4 DSi's and two DSi XL and can confirm that this is true.

And 3DS screens always looked washed out kind of, it's not the colors that will tell you if IPS or TN, for example, the DS Lite have a TN screen that is superior to the IPS of the DSi XL.

To tell if you have a TN or IPS, just hold a screen with black or white, tilt the screen to look from the top of it and see whites becomes greys and blacks become whites.

Looks at mines, got a 3DS XL, both TN screens, and a DSI both TN screens, same game same place, look how more vibrant and sharp the DSi is, but then, look how the titlting is shifting the shadows of the trees.

The 3DS had neat and superb viewing angles, but the screens always lacked of definition and vibrance, the DSi had a wonderfull screen, but really not that good viewing angles, and both are TN.

From what I read, TFT is not

ah this makes sense. I thought the DSi was IPS due to the vibrant colors compared to the washed out 3DS colors.
