RUMOR: Nintendo possibly telling developers that it has delayed its annual June Direct

fb-400x400.jpg

E3 won't be happening this year, but game companies throughout the world are still prepared to make their announcements and reveals this June. And ever since Nintendo moved their E3 Showcase into the digital Nintendo Direct format in 2013, they've always had a showcase in June. But this year might break that uninterrupted track record. A report from VentureBeat claims that Nintendo is telling developers that they will no longer be holding their annual June Direct, due to the difficulties of COVID-19 and their staff being forced to work from home. The report also claims that the difficulties may stem from Japan's work culture relying on respectful face-to-face meetings, and that workers in the country are not prepared for a work-from-home lifestyle.

VentureBeat's rumor track record has been fairly steady as of late, with the media outlet getting the dates for both March 26's Nintendo Direct and the Indie World Showcase correct a week prior to the official announcement.

n case rumor being indeed true in the end, may heavens be with them... cuz' luck won't be around to save them for now on like it did with the such a timing regarding sales of New Horizons.
Save them from what, though? They're killing it in the industry lately, and even with potential drought, their de-facto monopoly on handheld gaming is enough to keep them afloat through the next couple years (portable-minded gamers won't care much about PS5 or XBoxSX overall).

I think they are accumulating games to release. They wont want PS5 and xbox to get all the limelight when they are released.

Yeah, Nintendo almost definitely has a big release or two for this holiday season. Those 3D Mario remasters would make some sense, but the BOTW sequel might be the best foot forward they could put to combat with 2 system launches at the same time.

Having said that, I dunno how likely it is that the BOTW sequel could make it this year after this virus delaying work getting done and all of that. Still I think there is potential that it could still happen, not giving up hope on that possibility yet.

Hell, if Nintendo were smart, they'd work with Microsoft and Sony to allow owners of both a Switch and either of their systems to be able to remote play your PS4, PS5, Xbone, and/or Series X on the go. Sony has at the very least considered it considering they asked their players if they'd be interested in that very feature with a Switch in a survey they sent out a month or two ago, and Microsoft is obviously very close with Nintendo these days and seem keen on getting gamers to play their games in whatever way possible. I know such an idea sounds crazy on paper, but when you consider that you'd have to own both the Switch and the Sony or Microsoft console in question, it wouldn't be hurting hardware sales, in fact might even help motivate owners of one device to get another so that they can play on the go and greatly expand the library of playable games on the Switch.

That's what I am thinking as well. Get a good line up to help fight off the PS5 and XBX. They will hopefully have more systems available then as well.

Whats nintendos excuse for not having an online video showcase that can be done from home.

Cant be arsed to pay for the camera crew and someone to edit and host from home, cheap skates.

To be fair, its not like the switch has had anything big going for it, same old nintendo titles and old ports from past 2 generations.

Aside of obvious attachment to exclusivity, I think cloud gaming is too much of a "bleeding edge" technology at the moment - it can hinder playability, it's not very reliable, it only works with specific set-up (good consistent Wi-Fi connection), it's not all that portable unless you're willing to mess around with creating your own Wi-Fi spot with a phone, etc. Even if doing something like that was a real possibility, Nintendo always plays it safe with adding new features, after all.

People keep complaining that the switch has ports when literally the wii u sold 14 million units
Barely anyone played those games in the first place, youre saying you want nintendo to leave precious money behind? you just want to leave all the great wii u games on that one failed console nobody owns?

Clearly working in the same room is a lot easier but it seems like they never tried working from home ever. That's the kind of thing people should prepare for in case stuff like THIS happens. :ninja:
Have you ever thought that you would need to do social distancing like this due to a sudden pandemic? Not sure how one could prepare for this.

I feel like remote play is a little different than cloud gaming. It works quite well with a Vita for playing your own PS4. Plus straight up cloud gaming is a real thing for the Switch in Japan, with 3 games only playable on the device via streaming: Resident Evil VII Cloud, Assassin's Creed Odyssey Cloud and and Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud. I definitely wouldn't dismiss this thought as straight up impossible, the logistics are there and even the interest from Sony (and very likely Microsoft) appears to be there as well.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
