If it fails to updates with the disc drive not working that’s possibly why as the system tries to update the blue ray drive firmware as well and if it can’t see the drive either due to bad drive, disconnected drive, or a swapped drive that wasn’t remarried it will fail. I’d start by checking to make sure the blue ray drive is connected with both power and the ribbon cable to make sure it’s not that. If the disc drive has failed you would have to send it in for service as currently we don’t have a way to remarry a working drive

Yeah... i think not as well, and if turns ot that it can, im screwed in the next sony update, i would be stuck in 7.50 hahaha...
The answer is YES you can update to 7.50 using magic.pkg, but you would need to make a 1:1 back up as you would effectively be stuck on 7.50 (the same as you would be "stuck" on 5.05 if you did that option), as if you brick you WILL NOT be able to recover. This is very important.

Absolutely right, you will be on 7.50 forever. You should go to 4.74 then 5.05 :)

Yes you could, the magic pkg bypasses BD error.

I dont recommend updating to 7.50, as you will be stuck on 7.50 forever.

I recommend update to 5.05 from 4.74, make a 1:1 back up, play the long game, or replace/remarry your drive.

I think there is some confusion here. You can never downgrade.

The 1:1 backup is only to replace your hard drive if you brick your system in the future AFTER you have updated it.
Once you update to 5.05 (or 7.50) you will be stuck on that version forever, you can never downgrade to a previous version.

The reason for making the 1:1 drive backup (once you are on 5.05) is because you will not be able to recover your system using the regular recovery method if something goes wrong in the future.

Sorry to hijack this topic, I think my question is related. My PS4 had the same error message. I'm not interested in modding, as I'm already on 5.50 and I would like to use my psn-account to play games I purchased digitally.
So, I want to update to the latest firmware, and I'm interested in using this magic.pkg to do so. I can't seem to find information about this "magic.pkg" and about how I could create, use and install this for a 7.50 update. Could you guys help me get started? Google and browsing through this forum didn't help out much.
Also, if I were to be able to update to 7.50 using this PKG, what do you guys mean by not being able to use the regular recovery method? Will "initializing" not work anymore after using this magic.pkg? Also, I'm planning to replace/repair the discdrive eventually, will I be able to update using the regular updating program again or will I be stuck with using magic.pkg?

You can’t install and run payloads or PKGs on >5.07 so you cannot use this method.

You need to fix your BD drive, or replace with the same model you take out to bypass this error afaik.

There were reports of 7.50 causing that error message for people with perfectly functioning PS4s. Some were able to solve it by installing it via USB while in safe mode. But if you're homebrewing, I don't know why you'd want to update it to the latest.

Year I heard about these “bricks”, some said it just wouldn’t run BD games anymore. I have my Pro updated to 7.50 and (luckily) can not confirm this as it works fine and as intended.

This PS4 crashed long before the 7.50 update, I dusted it off and decided I wanted to try again. I did the initializing (formatting/resetting) process 3 times now, reinserted the flex-cable a couple of times, smashed the PS4, flipped the PS4 upside down, it didn't do anything. Eventually the disc-drive accepted and ejected the gamediscs again though, so I thought I was making progress.
As a last resort I decided to flip the flexcable from the motherboard to the disc-drive. Tried to update from USB two more times and then suddenly..... IT WORKED!
I have no idea why it suddenly accepted the update, maybe the system got tired of me trying :P Anyway, I somehow managed to install the update even though, right after the update the PS4 wouldn't accept discs anymore. You can jam it in there but it doesn't "suck" in the disc. Well... I don't care that much, I mainly use it for games I purchased online.
Anyone having the same issue, don't give up! Try everything I mentioned above, even flipping the PS4 upside down before updating seemed to do the trick for some people according to the youtube-comments. Good luck!

@tornado61 Have you tried opening up the dics drive? There are 2 long rollers in there with a smaller white plastic part in the middle that connect the 2. Sometimes they get disconnected causing the drive to not accept discs any more.
