Which devices do you guys prefer to use currently to play GBA games? I tried to play the other day on my Nintendo DS Lite but the bellow screen was to small and I felt a bit awkward. I also tried to play on my Android cellphone but I really missed physical buttons. I want to keep it portable so playing on PC is not really an option. Any suggestions?
Many controllers exist that clip onto your phone, like ones from Gamevice, GameSir and iPega. As well as that, there are clips you can buy or 3D print for controllers you might already own, like PS3 and PS4 controllers. 8bitdo also sell clips for the NES30 Pro/FC30 Pro, not sure about their other controllers.
Of course since most of the options out there have analog sticks, you're not only limited to GBA and earlier, N64 and PSX also work very well, and on more powerful devices, Dolphin also works well. PS2 is not quite there but Dreamcast should work well. Plus, a lot of Android games support controllers, and the ones that don't, you can use touchscreen emulation if you have a rooted device.
That's not a bad option, especially if you use it for other things besides just GBA emulation.

Personally, I really like the form factor of the OG GBA. Pair that with one of the new IPS backlit screen kits and an EZFlash Omega and optionally a rechargeable lipo battery kit and you have something good. But of course that's only good for GB(C) and GBA games, and NES if you don't mind kinda ugly scaling.

Also, many of the controllers designed to clip your phone onto also work like a normal controller over bluetooth or 2.4g RF with a PC, so they can be used for virtually any device, which is a big plus in my book.

He showed you 4 but has a 5th console in parts. He butchered his sentence but that's what he meant.

Right now I'm using an SP (001) with the EZ Flash Omega. When I first played on a GBA, it was a friend's SP with Pokemon Emerald, and playing on one of my own just... feels right. Plus it's nice not having to mod it or anything to get a good experience out of it.

How's the audio on your preferred non-GBAs? I noticed with the headphone adapter and a decent pair of headphones, the audio sounds a lot better than what I got out of VisualBoy Advance and mGBA.

I would say the OG 3DS + injection is the best way to experience GBA games. Headphone jack, decent screen and speakers, portability, runs great and the buttons/dpad feel really good. XL is good as well, but the buttons and dpad feel cheap in comparison.
