I am proud to announce the completion and release of the Everdrive N8 Pro review, for GBAtemp.

The Everdrive N8 Pro is the official “next, best-thing” over the ever popular N8 Flash Kit, a solution designed by Krikzz for retro gaming on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Family Computer! It supports both NES and FDS ROMs, offering a library of over 900 games, not including homebrew, translations, and hacks.

I don't think the guy who designs these is very smart financially. He could just get it mass produced in china for about $3-5/piece, and sell it for $20/piece and make as much money as he does in a year within a week or 2. It would take at least a few months before clones start popping up, by which time he would have made over 4 years worth of money. Either he's not financially savvy, or really just pays off his debts as soon as he makes a new product.

If it was that easy, don't you think krikkzz would've done that already? Look at Aliexpress, there are tons of Everdrive N8 and SD2SNES clones, but all of them in the 60 USD (N8) and 100 USD (SD2SNES) range, because the cloners also can't source the FPGA any cheaper. Same for PSIO, OSSC and any other retro solution that's FPGA based. If that was cheaper to produce, don't you think these people would be all over that already? There *are* super cheap Everdrive MD, Turbo Everdrive and Everdrive 64 clones, but those don't use expensive FPGAs.

The nes (and supernes) games have often extra hardware on the cart. Using a flashcart with emulated hardware is just a very expensive way to play with emulators. It's not original hardware anymore.

SD2SNES. is very good, since have support for MSU-1 hacks, but probably this card is only one example of open source project in whole Everdrive line

The sd2snes is another emulator cart for original hardware. It's just expensive. You want an emulator? Ok. You want original hardware? Ok too. You buy a flashcart? It's an hipster way to spend money :-)

Yes it is expensive as well, but pro version is even more insane kind of expensive, also if you choice to buy some of fpga based clone consoles...

I have no problem with software emulation i started by addiction to retro with use of PSP's homebrews to handle this.

Flash cart solutions are expensive for example flashcart for NeoGeo AES is around 600 euros, I think this price have added also creators tax for retro hype.

These NES everdrives are so ridiculously expensive, that is not even worth buying the chinese knockoffs! Which are also at least 60 dollars and with bad compatibility.

It would honeslty be cheaper to make a custom chip/cpu with software emulation, and have it shaped like a NES game, then you plug it to the NES and you are playing literally ANY game. Because not even this monstrously expensive thing is able to play all games! Which is honestly laughable.

I also have this brazilian friend/youtuber who tested the original N8, and Akumajou Densetsu (japanese Castlevania 3) sounds like crap on the N8. Pretty much the only reason why "I wanted" one at least. If ANYONE can confirm how Akumajou Densetsu works on this new one, please do.

Thanks for the review though, you guys are always good at this, and I am always good at complaning :)

When he tested Akumajou Densetsu, did he use a Japanese Famicom with the 60pin Famicom everdrive, or a Nes/Nes Everdrive? The special Akumajou Densetsu music ONLY works on a Famicom with a Famicom everdrive, or a modded Nes. The Nes removed pins needed for the extra sound to work, and even with a 72-60pin adapter or vise versa, the sound still wont work. Here's a vid of myself playing Akumajou Densetsu on a AV Famicom using a Original (not pro) Famicom Everdrive N8, and the audio works nearly perfectly.

Sounds great!! Yes he was using a Famicom AV, he first used the original game, then he tried the N8 and the game, but it didn't sound right! Yours sound exactly if not a bit better than his original Akumajou densetsu!!

Here Famicom AV with original game:

And here Famicom AV with the game through the N8:

He is probably using a Chinese N8! Maybe, I will ask him to be honest about this! :) Thank you so much!! Now I regret because I did not buy it (N8), a month ago I saw your same version (Yellow original N8) at 89 dollars! Thank you again for this!

Glad to help. For the record, I don't think it's a Chinese N8. I was having the same sound issues on my Everdrive when I first got it, but they were fixed in a Beta update that overhauled the VRC7 audio. Chances are your friend was testing it using an old firmware version since the videos you posted are from April 2018, 1 month before the VRC7 update was released in beta. The update is out of beta now though, just download the latest version of the firmware and the audio should work same as mine. http://krikzz.com/pub/support/everdrive-n8/original-series/OS/ I also boosted the VRC7's audio levels to 133% in the Sound balancer because I think it sounds better that way.

I would say, to make it sound more like the original would be something like 120%. But sure, maybe you are right, the new firmware probably fixes these issues, but at least that I know of, these chinese N8's ARE NOT able to update! And if you do, the flashcard becomes unusable, this is from what I have read.

Again, I do not have any N8 flashcard, I was just mentioning how I regret not having purchased one, when they were a bit cheaper (89 dollars) for an original one.

Again thank you VERY much, in case you ever want to sell yours (kidding) or know of a good price for one (the yellow one), be sure to send me a PM. My very best regards from Chile.
