Minecraft is getting a public beta for a ray-traced graphics update this week

RTX On! Prepare to see Minecraft in a whole new way, with the announcement of a public beta for a ray-tracing based graphics update for the game. Those playing the Windows 10 version of Minecraft and that have a newer Nvidia graphics card will be able to partake in a beta that showcases how the game looks with fancier "next-gen" visuals that overhaul reflections, shadows, and effects. To check out the beta, you'll need to go into the Minecraft Marketplace section of the game, where you can grab the RTX Creator Worlds for free, specifically designed to showcase how Minecraft looks with RTX. The beta will go live on April 16th.

Guess I'll have to buy the Win10 version just so I can have something in my library that uses ray tracing. Gotta put that RTX 2080 Super to work.
If you bought Java Minecraft before October something something 2018 (I think?), you can get a Windows 10 copy for free when you log into Mojang's site :teach:

As to the news, meh. Neat I guess, but not a game RTX would benefit much from. Custom shaders and texture packs, on the other hand, are a must.

Oh, neat, I'll have to look. I've had the Java version for... a long time.

Edit - Had to look because I know I've posted about it here, found a KYT thread about me talking about my Minecraft server from 2013. So at least that long ago, probably longer.

If only this was the Java version, then I might care some.

Shaders

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

But what does it matter, it's still just the same old blocky voxel-based visuals. That's like putting a body kit on a Ford Pinto.

i you do not like the pixel look you could do this on Minecraft Java with a shader

People mocking this for it being only Minecraft are missing the the point. Much like Quake II RTX, the simple visuals serve as a good way to emphasise the raytracing effects specifically which can often be less evident in more visually advanced games (Metro Exodus, Control etc.). It's being used to demonstrate the technology.

Plus Minecraft has the unique advantage of being manipulatable by the player. You can directly change and manipulate the raytracing effects with blocks, placing light sources etc. I don't even like Minecraft, but just check out the videos of this in action - it's really impressive when taken out of the context of the noise of more modern games.

You can get RayTracing on Java. In fact, with shaders, you get an even more complete integration as PathTracing. Check out the SEUS PTGI Shaders ;)

i mean you could run shaders with optifine and the closest would be the SEUS shader pack

That is not official though. OptiFine breaks a whole lot of stuff too.

I don't know how quoting works, but another user said this;
