Google is offering 2 months of Stadia Pro for free

kbNTqK4.png

Want to try out game streaming while you're in lockdown? No? Well, Google is offering a free trial for its Stadia Pro service anyway. Those that live in the 14 countries where Stadia is available can get two months of Stadia Pro, and 9 games to try out right off the bat. You have 48 hours to grab the free trial, if you're interested, and after your two months of membership, you'll be automatically enrolled in the $9.99/mo tier, though you can cancel that at any time. Those that are already paying for the service will also find that they won't be charged for the next two months. All you need to do is follow the source link, sign up for the trial, and get the Stadia app.

Normally, Google Stadia Pro users can play games at 4K resolution, but during this time, where more users than normal are at home and using online services, Google will be defaulting games to 1080p, but you can change this if you really want to, by going to data usage settings.

update I managed to squeeze out 32Mbps by changing settings in my ethernet driver settings the main one i can think of is change speed and duplex to 100M and full duplex this forces the higher setting for data transfer do this instead of auto negotiate i noticed a huge difference and so did google from 1mbps to 32mbps (and that 1mbps was with all my wifi electronics off the network)

Not gonna pay for stadia or geforce now but i must say even with a +100mbps connection geforce now looks like utter shit compared to stadia. Probably has to do with Nvidia not investing enough in European servers but i do see stadia visually looking way better compared to geforce now wich is a blocky mess for me. Either way won't pay for either of them

(a means of preventing people owning games, though I find it particularly amusing that they will run off and cuddle up to Steam as though it has done no wrong but hey)
As long as we have access to files, no DRM is unbreakable. Steam itself can be DRM-free and their "DRM" is so shitty there are like 5 Steamworks emulators. If Steam suddenly drops off the Earth, I can keep my games, unlike Stadia.

Plus, there's always GOG or Itch for those games you want to make sure to keep without having to use cracks or something.

Access might be the key word there. There are a few games that stored parts of the game executable on a remote network.

That said we have also seen very big companies shutter DRM services before ( https://www.npr.org/2019/07/07/7393...rary-erasing-all-user-content?t=1586541369654 , https://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/25/yahoo_announces_death_of_drm_servers/ ) and the way most private companies like Valve fall over means I can't take any promises as more than a nice idea.

None of this also covers their reluctance to allow me to resell (or in my case buy those from others) games either. Or them playing censor.

Could you give some example of game executables that need remote network to fully work? I'm quite curious to know if there is any workarounds for those.

Either way, I am not expecting Valve to keep their promise of "in case we die, we'll make sure you can keep your games", I'm expecting people to just crack the game they already have. And yeah, digital reselling should be a thing but I didn't bat an eye to that as I dislike to sell my games. For the censor thing, I'm glad we can get those from other stores or patch it back, it's an advantage over consoles who are locked to a single store and not modifiable without hacking.

Alright since it was for free I did test it yesterday and I must say I'm impressed.
I played Destiny 2 and GRID in Google Chrome (Windows 10) and apart from 1 - 2 seconds of blurry graphics every 5 minutes it went very well and looked very good. Especially Destiny 2 surprised me being an action shooter.
I would never play something like Counter Strike via stream I guess but I had fun for 2 hours yesterday.

Nonetheless I won't pay for Stadia PRO nor will I buy any games there. As soon as the two free months end I'm out as well.

I don't see why I should buy games in another service while I could play those I already bought in Geforce Now or Shadow, especially since it's hard to impossible to get my savegames from there.
In other words: If Stadia is being nuked by Google, not only my "owned" games are gone but my savegames are too (which to me is even worse).

Was just curious about how well it works inside Google Chrome and I wish Geforce Now would offer that as well instead of having to install a native app.
The fact that we don't need anything else but Chrome for Stadia is pretty neat, I have to admit.

I can't remember offhand which it was and have not properly investigated it (PC game cracking is not something I am terribly invested in compared to the handhelds and home consoles). Was watching a video on DRM and it was some driving game.

As for advantage there were free and open devices that were not the PC, indeed numerically speaking the closed off devices of Nintendo, Sony, Sega and MS might still be the minority. Valve's quasi monopoly status also makes me pause -- not being on Steam is a bit like not being on Amazon in that while it is technically not a block on sales... any loan, business analyst or the like will treat it as one.

yea this isn't really made for gamers since gamers would have brought the games already. now they have set up their own studios to make their own 1st party games but would u signup just for those?

we probably won't see anything until 2-4 years away as they just started.

Not surprising at all due no one really caring for Stadia but hey, nice of them to offer it at all I guess. I personally wouldn't use it.

What's the point if it still makes you buy the games that they have no plan of letting you keep? Even Valve has a failover if Steam is to ever go sayonara, but Google doesn't even have the foresight to plan for that eventuality in their case.
